Duke Nuke'em

JJ Redick will scrub out as a pro. Witness last night's game. If he's not shooting wide open threes, he's ineffective. He got totally shut down. The best he can hope for is a career like Steve Kerr's, minus the championships. No way he should be a lottery pick. His game doesn't translate to the NBA.

O-Ver-Rated!!! O-Ver-Rated

The legions of Duke/Redick haters out there musr have had sweet dreams last night. D beat me to the punch, but I’m sure this was another eye opener for NBA scouts. I have seen Redick in person three times in the last two years, against St. Johns in 04/05 and against Texas and Temple this year. He ran rough shod against Texas, hitting NBA jumpers at will, and going to the hole with impunity against a team that played zero defense. Against St. John’s and Temple he was harassed for 40 minutes and forced up ill conceived jumpers from the NBA 3 point line and not doing nearly enough to get his teammates involved. I think the Steve Kerr comparison is not being fair to Kerr who at least understood is place as a role player among stars. I think Redick compares more closely to the Sixer’s Kyle Korver (without the resemblance to Ashton Kutcher). Riddick might be able to find a niche in the NBA as a spot shooter but he will never be a star.

Williams 8min. more like 1

Despite J.J.Redick having the kind of terrible night that will last in more peoples mind than his multiple records,Duke still could have won, even down with less than a minute to go.What would have happened if Shelden Williams had continued to play like he was capable of down the stretch istead of avoiding all contact in order to keep from fouling out with a minute to go in his final game? Maybe Davis wouldn't have been able to clean up the boards like he did.Or maybe Davis and/or Thomas would have fouled out and let Redick inside.Either way he ould have made a difference instead of turning the game into 4 on 5.His concern wasn't even valid, Davis and Thomas had already established that the refs weren't going to call a thing by committing there fith, sixth and seventh fouls.Coach K may have gotten 8 minutes out of Williams, but 2 hard minutes would have been far better.

Yes, definitely a choke

Gonzaga has no other way to explain getting beaten by a team they so thoroughly dominated in the first half. The Bruins not only played like my middle school team, but they just looked overmatched--perhaps because they were getting whupped by "America's Team" (ugh--not to this Hoosiers fan). To allow UCLA to come back, let alone to win, is bad teamwork, bad play, bad fundamentals, bad basketball knowledge (why wave the ball around in a double-team??), and bad coaching

Speaking of which, three of college basketball's more colorful characters--Redick, Morrison, Pittsnogle--were eliminated last night with their teams. Whatever will Packer and Nantz talk about? Perhaps the winner of the Witchita St./George Mason matchup can provide a new hero. I'm rooting for the Shockers, even if it's just for the Beavis-and-Butthead appeal of their team name (the Shockers, huhh-huhh).

BTW, I'm about as anti-Duke as you can get, but I have to say that Coach K's handling of the foul situation for Shelden Williams was spot-on, of course. Redick disappeared, and Williams stepped up big-time--no way Coach K could sit that guy when the rest of the team didn't show up. And Krzyzewski gave a classy post-game press conference, probably one of the classiest post-NCAAs I've seen him give.

And neither Redick nor Morrison will be NBA superstars, I don't think. Redick can't create a shot in traffic, and Morrison can't play a lick of defense.

Coach K KNOWS he can leave his stars in.

Williams could knife my grandmother in the stands and not pick up that fifth foul. This has gone on for YEARS everytime Duke plays. K is a master at teaching the Hook, Pushoff, Handcheck, and Over-the-Back because he knows officiating will fall his way nine times out of ten. This year, Duke lost EVERY game played with a straight whistle, an ACC crew was suspended for jobbing Boston College, and even lowly Temple was in with a chance until Duke's 6th, 7th, & 8th men took over. One day, officiating crews will lose their awe of D1 basketball's "elite" coaches and their stars. As a fan, I can only hope.

thats the flaw with your thinking

I think Hippi pointed out perfectly the problem with your "always leave them in" mentality. Players who think that they have more fouls than they should at a particular point in the game play tentatively and afraid. Williams was absolutely a non-factor for the rest of the game after picking up that fourth foul. Did you see the way Davis got that rebound with no other players rebounding off the missed free throw? Or the previous rebound off a missed free throw, when Williams didn't even box out? The problem isn't just the player fouling out; the problem is also that the player left in plays at half speed.

And I have to point out, you praised Coach K in this game for leaving Williams in, and you criticized Jim Calhoun for taking Okafor out in the Final Four in 2004. But Duke lost this game and Uconn won that one. Not that that really proves anything, but I think you've got to keep an eye on the end result.

Foul trouble didn't stop LSU

Coach K absolutely was correct for leaving Williams in the game. Funny that the foul trouble for the LSU big guys didn't stop them from dominating the glass at the end of the games. I guess the preceding comments on Sheldon Williams and coach K just show that when you lose you're gonna be criticized no matter what you do

Taking the blame

Unfortunately, I think I have to be the one to take the blame for Gonzaga's collapse last night. You see, when the Texas-WVU game finished, I turned to my bracket to fill in my winners, and for some reason assumed that the Gonzaga game had ended already and assumed they'd won because they were up by 17 last time I checked. I filled them in on my bracket with my little yellow highlighter. When I flipped back to the CBS and saw that the game was still on and Gonzaga only were up by 10 with about 5 minutes I just knew I had jinxed them. I said, "They are going to lose." You all may not think I have this kind of power over time, space and basketball, but I am not so sure . . .
