Whenever a liberal politician dares to compare any action of the right-wingers to the actions of the Nazis, the ADL is all over it as being disrespectful to the victims of the Holocaust. But apparently right-wingers can make all the Nazi comparisons they want without criticism. Good for Wiesel, who has consistently been one of the strongest and sanest voices in the ongoing conversation about how we should deal with the Holocaust and the aftermath of the Nazi era; it would be nice if he had some backup.

A few weeks ago I saw some fringe group (Larue? I can't remember the pac) sitting outside my picturesque post office on the village green, with a huge honkin' poster of Obama wearing a Hitler mustache. I had my kindergartner with me, and so I decided to ignore them.

They will do whatever they think is obnoxious and offensive and they will go out of their way to use Nazi symbolism because that is the sort of thing they identify with and believe in. There not afraid of it - and they are not unaware of the atrocities they are referring to- they are threatening and taunting everyone else with that bullshit.

I'm glad Wiesel spoke out- maybe it move decent people to think about what is actually going on. But asking people who proudly walk around with a swastika for respect or thoughtfulness is just plain naive or stupid- definitely barking up the wrong tree.

True for the west coast, too. I live in a *very* left area; I work with a number of vegans, vegetarians, localvore, avid biker, EV-angelist and so on typical leftie stereotypical west coast folks. I count myself in a few of those categories.

I don't know a single person who thinks PETA is anything other than a bunch of loons - and this counts a fairly loony student population. Every so once in a while we'll get into discussions over whether a given point could be salvaged from the mass of dookey PETA coats it with, but generally it's a wash.

Hell, some of us like to joke it must be a rightwingnut funded org, akin to Nixon specifically having his limo driven through protest crowds to drum up opposition to the dirty hippies.

As a Jew, I do not equate anything with the Holocaust, but I have no problem with saying that animals in factory farms and laboratories are treated with the same monstrous cruelty that Nazis treated their victims. If you are offended by that, too bad.
