The curse of Obama's old Senate seat

The president's last job certainly helped him out -- so why does no one else want it?

Don't blame Keyes

The Burris debacle could have been avoided altogether if a special election had been held to elect Obama's successor. The only reason it wasn't held is because Democrats in the Illinois legislature opposed it because they were afraid voters, disgusted with Blago's antics and Democratic corruption in general, might have elected a Republican.

Re: Basrrister89

And if, you know, Illinois had a system set up for special elections. But we don't for some insane reason. And in the time it would have taken to set that up, Blago would still have appointed someone. Which, being (quite idiotically) the right of Illinois's governor, they couldn't have reasonably stopped him from doing.

Yeah, we have a really crappy set up for that.

I hope...

Obama sends Jeri Ryan a very nice fruit basket every year on her birthday. If it weren't for her, he'd still be an Illinois state legislator.
