What was Sarah Palin thinking?

No one knows why the governor's resigning, or what she'll do next -- but her base likes the move

here's hoping...

... that there IS a scandal brewing, because otherwise Palin has a very strong base behind her, and hers is the kind that because more and more energized the nastier the bile spewed at her gets!

Little Tina Fey(*) can do as many cartoony impressions of Palin as she wants, but that will have zero impact on Palin's popularity, and in fact will simply make her into more of an icon amongst those who loathe the so-much-smarter-than-thou liberal media/media elite crowd (or however you wanna call it).

Again, let's hope there's a scandal coming, otherwise she will remain a viable political contender for years to come.

work

I don't think she'd resign over a scandal, just take to the airwaves expressing indignation over the media.

Honestly, I think it's a combination of the people in her home state getting sick of an absentee governor AND the fact that she can make a lot of money if she takes speaking engagements and flogs her book.

July 4th in Wasilla

I just got back from the 4th of July parade here in Wasilla where the military had a strong presence, as always, along with local businesses and organizations--scout troops, cheer squads, antique cars, local churches. The highlight, though, is the parade of firefighters, fire trucks, and rescue vehicles. The American Patriot party is holding a TEA (Taxed Enough Already) party this afternoon at Wasilla Lake park. (Interesting in a state without an income tax.) Their float was followed by two men carrying rough beam straddled by a figure that had been tarred and feathered, and around its neck was a sign that said 'Liberal Politician' within a struck-through red circle. Their banner noted that the US Constitution is inspired by God for the betterment of all His children.

I'm sitting at my computer not too far away from Wonderland Park in Wasilla where a church choir from Texas is singing about Jesus' lovingkindness. A couple of thousand people are there right now, feasting on free hot dogs and bottled water in ice filled kiddie pools. Sarah did not make an appearance, as far as I know.

Wasilla is like a lot of small towns, and I think it's a mistake to think of Palin in Red vs. Blue terms. Hers is a populist appeal, and that she's being counted out by establishment only adds to her credibility among her base.

I gotta go. The mayor is announcing the winners of the parade-float contest.

How can you run with this on your record?

How can you run for any office with "quitter" on your record... I mean the attack ads write themselves....

"

Hi, I'm agent_c and I approve this message.

Unlike some of my opponents I don't believe that high office is just a summer job... When you vote for me, you know exactly who you're going to get - I'm not going to quit half way through and pass the job onto someone else. Unlike some of my opponents, I'm not going to use my position to reward a few friends and then cash in my retirement cheque."

too easy.

What was Sarah Palin thinking?

Who can tell? Palin thinks with her gonads. Little logic there.

By resigning, Palin deserves credit for making good on her campaign promise to reduce corruption in Alaska state government. You may not like her methods but her results are unquestionable.

Alaska needs to pass a law prohibiting persons who have resigned any elected office from seeking any elected office in the future. And keep the legislation secret until she's actually resigned. She not obligated to go through with it, you know. Whatever her motivation for threatening to leave - prenatal depression, lack of self-esteem, That Time of the Month, threats from the Republican mafia, hissy fit - she probably has some inner need to have everybody beg her to stay.

psdoff

She wanted to be governor for a reason and it was not to be spending the states money on court proceedings caused by the left wing press, who don't have to answer for their false accusations.

Then she should stop doing stuff that raises eyebrows, stop spouting smarmy, divisive rhetoric, and use her last year and a half to get something done. Not leave a job half-done. What she's saying by quitting like this is that her naysayers are correct and she's more trouble than she's worth to her state.

I still think she's finished with politics...

This woman couldn't take the stress of the national spotlight on her family the first time around, I doubt she's in a hurry to do it again. Couple that with the legal problems she's had and I think she pulled a Nixon, getting out before impeachment. Her base was always delusional so of course they think this is part of some larger "plan". She'll write a couple books on family and the evils of the media and be a sometimes guest commenter on Fox and that'll be it for her. We always knew she was a lightweight.

I thought she'd made a commitment

Palin ran for and was elected tot he office of Governor of Alaska. I thought people who ran for elected office were making a commitment to do the job if they got elected. Apparently Palin doesn't believe in keeping her commitments and her base is okay with that. I can see how this will allow her the time to make a bunch of money speaking at neo-con and right wing religious venues but cannot see how it makes her look any less flakey to those not blinded with hatred of anything left of Limbaugh.
