Every pundit and talking head has been telling her (via the Media) that she can't be a national figure when she's tied-down as governor of the North Pole. She needs to study-up. She needs to take a step back. She's not promising to go away, despite Andrea Mitchell's reporting.
A governorship is a stepping stone. The real brass ring is out there, several thousand miles away from the dusty roads of Wasilla. She may be a cartoon figure, but she's as shrewd and calculating as a cartoon figure can be.
If Palin is in fact preparing for a run for the presidency in 2012, this seems like a bizarre choice. In the last election, the Republican party got some traction from the "experience" argument - that McCain had it, Obama didn't. I find it hard to believe that the Republican party is going to select a candidate who served less than one term as state governor and wouldn't be holding political office at the time. That doesn't seem like a great person to campaign against an incumbent president.
While it's interesting to think that there might be some looming scandal on the horizon or that she's done in politics, I think it's perfectly fitting with her personality and ego just to assume that it's a bizarre bit of preparation for the 2012 election.
That they'd be impressed with her shirking her responsibilities due to pressure from the press. Assuming of course, as I'm sure her base would, that she's even telling the truth.
The way I see it, is if they believe her and feel she's justified for quitting due to negative press then they are also admitting she's unready to hold public office.
That Sarah Palin is stepping down in such a hurry, because she has been offered big bucks to do a "reality TV" show. It's not surprising, really, is it? We all knew that it was her true calling. She is a TV reality kinda gal, where things don't really have to make sense. Just give us some more drama!
During the press conference she certainly didn't look to me like someone so bursting with confidence and ambition that she was ready to make a bold move toward being elected president. She looked and sounded like a scared little girl who'd been told to get out of Dodge by somebody with big guns, and was packing up her toys in frantic haste.
While I do agree that its plausible that she thought this was a good idea in prep for a '12 run, I think she'd never make it out of the primaries. Too easy for opponents to run commercials showing clips of her resigning due to negative press, calling her out for shirking her responsibilities and asking if the country could afford to have her resign inexplicably if she were president. Ya, her base likes her, but there's a lot more than base needed to win.
Current gist at daily kos:
"Palin corruption story is true. She got a free house in exchange for $13M contract award. she is D-O-N-E."
That looks interesting.
SP "governed" a state awash in oil money and federal largesse. She could've come, done her time and gone and no one would've noticed. John McCain, in a multi-level clusterfuck, dragged her into the national spotlight and it was too much for her. That's all there is to it, IMO -- no lurking mega-scandals and certainly no runs for higher office.
if you have the stomach and patience to scroll way down the comments of joan's post about this, to get to the twisted and tortured logic of readerx2 and his ilk, you'll find that NOTHING palin does could ever be construed by her base as a misstep. if she were caught in a hotel room with two dead hookers and a bag of coke, they would still find a way to blame it on the liberal media and hail it as a savvy political move.
but you're right, these are not the people she has to convince going forward to 2012. i find it hard to believe that anyone could reasonably decide to begin campaigning now, six months into obama's first term, for the next election, but palin's ego and obliviousness to decorum are just large enough to make that explanation plausible. the timing and sheer oddness of the decision do invite one to imagine an impending scandal, but that seems like wishful thinking to me.
i just don't see how she manages to overcome the negative connotations of this move, and the ridicule it invites -- especially from barracudas like romney and gingrich! -- during a prolonged campaign.
Palin's speech was weird. I think there is a scandal about to break...maybe involving her drug addict son, Track, who was shipped off to Iraq or one of her other kids. Another possibility is that she actually did have an affair with one of her husbands's business associates, as was reported last year by the National Enquirer, and something related to that is about to blow.
I am happy to see her self-destruct. Unfortunately, a lot of people, including some of my relatives are too dumb to see the obvious.

...until Camille Paglia explains why it was a brilliantly unorthodox political move, and an act of political genius.
This is really a goofy title. "Palin thinking" is an oxymoron.
Governor, what is your energy policy?
"Drill, baby drill".
Governor, what is your foreign policy?
"Bomb, baby, bomb".
Governor, what advice did you give your daughters?
"Abstinence, baby, abstinence.
Governor, what is your political strategy?
Quit,baby, quit".

this does not seem like a move of a future presidential contender. if she wanted to bolster her national credibility, the move is to build her thin resume, not cut it off.
my guess is that one of two things happened: some big scandal is about to break, or she's so exhausted from being under the microscope that she's finally cracked.
if the rumors about the house-for-play story is true, that ain't good. especially when ted stevens got the federal shoe up his ass for accepting some weird wooden statues.
but let's face it - she's a dim bulb who also happens to be incredibly narcissistic. i think all the negative press actually hurts her, and she gets slammed every time she opens her mouth because every time she opens her mouth, something more ludicrously asinine comes out. she could just be fried.
either way, i hope she's done because our country needs a strong two-party system with thinking people at the helm of both ships. she represents the weakest opponent possible for the left--the scared ignoramus sector. it's hard to get better when you're playing against a pee-wee team. the adults need to take over the GOP, wherever they may be.
