How long can Sanford hang on?

The pressure on the governor increases, as even more members of his own party push him to step down

He should step down before the stress ruins his wife's health

Jenny Sanford's legs look skinnier than my forearms. She looks like she has some serious issues of her own and I think he needs to step down to help her deal with them.

He should stay just because Clinton did

It depends on the events that emerge in the coming months and days. If some horrific event like 911 or an earthquake or hurricane happens, this will all be forgotten. Anything in between, it's anyone's guess. I think he should stay just because Clinton did. Big news never fails to emerge.

So when Clinton "stayed"

@SoberInput--if I recall correctly, Clinton "stayed" through something called an impeachment. Are you suggesting that Stanford face something like that? Cause he ought to, given how he voted on Clinton during the impeachment.

Also I think now is the time for the SC Democrats to vote, in a non-binding resolution, for the SC Republican party to change its name to the "Mark Sanford Had an Affair Party."

Pressure, a week too late

The state's Republican leadership should have been pressuring Sanford to step down last week when it emerged that he irresponsibly left his state, and the country, secretly to continue an ongoing tryst in Argentina. Of course now that he's outed himself as a serial philanderer, and robbed himself of any sympathetic cloak, those Republicans that were crying along with Sanford are now calling for his head. Good for them, but they are still a week late.

Sober guy

Liberals don't want Sanford to resign.

People in your party with two neurons to rub together want him gone.

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 06:23 PM

Why would he step down?

Out of work, disgraced and broke ain't gonna get him any pussy, now will it.

Republican Peccadilloes

Larry Craig faced the opposition of basically every Republican Senator (and a lot of Republican congressmen), and gave his own series of cringe-inducing interviews after being caught in that airport men's room. I note, however, that Craig is still in place.

I'll believe Sanford will resign when I actually hear his resignation speech. Republicans in public office have shown, over and over again, that they think nothing of their blatant, shameless hypocrisy. I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Craig is not in place

he didn't run last year.

Sign a Book Deal, Gov!

He's got the best sex scandal going on this year-to-date, so why not just quit now and cash in on that? Would make more $$$ that way than serving out his term :)

I hope Governor Sanford stays on in office.

I hope he goes on FoxNews weekly to preach morality to America.

I hope he is nominated to run as Sarah Palin’s running mate for President/VP in 2012.

I hope he is the face of the Republican Party for the next ten years.

Why on all of the news outlets and blogs are these questions about Sanford and his Wise Latina Lover not being asked?

1. Sanford, are you trying to get back together with your wife, or do you prefer your Wise Latina lover, or are you trying to keep both women?

2. Has your opinion of alternative life styles changes since you crossed "the sex line" with your wise latina lover while you were still married to another woman?

3. You mentioned other women you "crossed lines" with, were any of them of races other than white?

4. We know that your Republican constituents in South Carolina frown upon their politicians fathering "brown children", so is there any possibility that you might have fathered a "brown child"?

5. When you "crossed the ultimate line" with your Wise Latina lover, did you use protection and/or other forms of birth control?

6. Do you have a contingency plan if you accidentally got your Wise Latina lover pregnant?

7. When you "crossed the ultimate line" with your Wise Latina lover, did the Earth move for you?

8. Do you think it moved for her?

9. Is it true what they say about Wise Latinas; you know, that they're very empathetic?

Why are we caring about this?

Yeah, the guy cheated on his wife. Last time I heard, that's not a crime in any jurisdiction in America.

Yeah, he didn't tell anyone where he was going. Does the governor (more than anyone else) have to tell everyone where he's headed? Did he have no vacation time accrued? Was`there an urgent matter that HAD to be dealt with? Does a public official have NO individual rights?

We need to stop putting politicians on some holier-than-thou pedestal that somehow raises them above everyone else. They are people - no better and no worse than the neighborhood auto mechanic or ditch-digger.

They fail. We ALL fail. And anyone who says "I don't", is a liar. NOBODY is perfect. And politicians are especially prone to failure. The fact that they strive their entire lives for power and influence makes them much more susceptible to failure.

I am a proud liberal. But the schadenfreude liberals are feeling over Sanford, Craig, Limbaugh and Gingrich is NOT WHAT WE NEED! We need to let go of these petty bickerings and start dealing with real problems. Health care, the economy, etc.

I say STOP!

Miss Lindsey Graham

I think if Miss Lindsey Graham says you should resign, you should listen.

"Alaska Independence" is a pretty damning name

The governor asserted that the registration form says "Alaska Independent," but it doesn't. There is no way to construe the party name as a label for "independent Alaskans," whatever that means.

Thursday, July 2, 2009 09:27 AM

oh?

Yeah, the guy cheated on his wife. Last time I heard, that's not a crime in any jurisdiction in America.

Yeah, he didn't tell anyone where he was going. Does the governor (more than anyone else) have to tell everyone where he's headed? Did he have no vacation time accrued? Was`there an urgent matter that HAD to be dealt with? Does a public official have NO individual rights?

We need to stop putting politicians on some holier-than-thou pedestal that somehow raises them above everyone else.

1. Adultery IS illegal in SC. - even if the law is rarely, if ever, enforced. $500 fine, year in jail.

2. When you run for a high public office, you accept that you will be responsible for everything the position you're seeking entails. Sure, you can go on vacation, but you can't simply run away and disappear from the responsibilities that YOU seek to take on, whenever you please. Whether an "urgent matter" came up or not during this disappearance has no bearing. It's the abdication of responsibility to either a) be reachable, or b) pass off YOUR authority and responsibilities to the lt. gov. WHILE you're "disappeared" that is the issue.

3. Sanford put HIMSELF on a "holier-than-thou pedestal". His entire career and positions on many, many things - like MANY sanctimonious, so called "conservatives" - was based on his supposed religion based "moral superiority". No body cares if the atheist plumber fixing your pipes is cheating on his wife. When you run for office and then use that office to beat up on "morally inferior" people, well then schadenfreude is certainly the least you can expect from those whom you've excoriated for the very same behavior.
