Climate bill passes House

Republicans employed some unusual delaying tactics, but Democrats scored a narrow victory anyway

Legislative Tactics

I can't say I'm particularly fond of the last-minute 300+ page amendment added in the wee hours, either. It wasn't a good thing when Republicans did that sort of thing, and it's not really a good way to conduct congressional business now.

Reading the bill isn't really a 'delaying tactic'

While I'm sure the Republicans were pulling shenanigans largely because they could, reading aloud an amendment that was tacked on at 3am that morning actually doesn't seem like a bad idea. Make sure everyone has a chance to at least hear what they're voting for.

So we agree there is such a thing as climate

Excellent.

Grandstanding

Congress people don't read bills.

Their staff does. It doesn't matter if an amendment is added in the wee small hours...

nobody would read the bills anyway.

I realize that some people find this highly offensive their members of congress vote on information provided by staff and lobbyists...

and to them, I suggest they run and get elected to congress and see how many bills they read before voting on them.

Dems need to stop doing crap like adding 300 page amendments last minute

This would have been fine if they didn't get power hungry. It's going to be their downfall I'm afraid.

Friday, June 26, 2009 05:29 PM

Read the bill...

also, just because they are reading the bill, don't assume there was anyone in the chamber to hear it being read.

Friday, June 26, 2009 05:31 PM

Did any of the Democrats who voted against...

... do so for "progressive" reasons? Or just for "Blue Dog" reasons?

As a constituent of Ed Markey, I'd prefer if he took his name off the bill. By all accounts, this has been watered down so much in committee as to be pretty much toothless.

Friday, June 26, 2009 05:34 PM

Progressives...Blue Dogs?

Looks like a mixed bag.

The Dem 44: Altmire, Arcuri, Barrow, Berry, Boren, Bright, Carney, Childers, Costa, Costello, Dahlkemper, Davis (AL), Davis (TN), DeFazio, Donnelly, Edwards (TX), Foster, Griffith, Herseth Sandlin, Holden, Kirkpatrick, Kissell, Kucinich, Marshall, Massa, Matheson, McIntyre, Melancon, Minnick, Mitchell, Mollohan, Nye, Ortiz, Pomeroy, Rahall, Rodriguez, Ross, Salazar, Stark, Tanner, Taylor, Visclosky, Wilson (OH).

The GOP 8: Bono, Castle, Kirk, Lance, Lobiondo, McHugh, Reichert and Smith (NJ).

If Boehner had lasted 4 hours

Would someone had to have called a doctor? Ah, word play...

In the dark of night

Some fine pork nicely added for the benefit of the House reps who agreed to vote for the bill. So what has changed and why is anyone surprised by these whores. They are no better than any of their predecessors.

Friday, June 26, 2009 06:14 PM

The sweet sweet smell-

- of progress.

One man's pork

is another's constituent services.

Pork is a very minor part of budgeting, but it sure pisses off some people when someone else's district gets it.

Sink irk

Mark Kirk can kiss the Senate good-bye. I would have supported him enthusiastically. Now, win or lose, my energy and money will go to a conservative.

Friday, June 26, 2009 08:20 PM

Wonderful, Wonderful

The Chinese and the Russians and the Indians wil pay no attention to their CO2 emmissions. They will talk a good game. As the Unite States sinks more and more as Obama wishes there will be a good chance of Real Americans taking back this country. Do we really need that foul mouthed Israeli/American duel citizen as the Obongo chief of staff, do we need that tax cheat as the Sec. Treasury? Of course not.

We conservatives will be taking back our country and getting it back onto the correct track. Folks you'll love it.

Some folks might actually have to give up their ACORN "job" and go back to a real job.

The hoaxes reign supreme and will take your money. Listen to the Marxists for full description of the hoax du jour. Praise King Hussein and his minions.

re: Getting back on the right [Conversative] track

I'd be interested if you could find a true Conservative, but it seems to me that true Conservatives are now Extinct: they all passed away from neglect some time ago like some Japanese video game pet. Even Ron Paul I would put merely in limbo. The prior administration was a traitor to conservative principles, and the Republican controlled congress traitor for longer than that. It's all about the Benjamins.

This Bill is a Goldman Sachs Wet Dream

Check out Matt Taibsi's article in Rolling Stone. Access can also be had at:

http://files.posterous.com/bigpicture/aHW5evmDBnCwNkBHqo0h1Jncxoj7aa7ItKD8uqBo2bwoBfSfCtnPzzTqk5XI/goldman.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=1C9REJR1EMRZ83Q7QRG2&Expires=1246074105&Signature=Ioxzqo0Z6QVeIVlRMWRVUYNAy%2Fc%3D

Goldman plans to inflate yet another market in carbon credits and strongly supports this bill. If Goldman succeeds, the price of fuel, electricity, and food will go through the stratosphere. If you liked the run-up in the price of oil last summer, you will love what happens if this bill is enacted into law.

I am no repub. I can't stand them. However, I am rapidly losing faith in the integrity of the entire Congress and the Obama administration. I am looking for any sign that they are not owned lock stock and barrel by Goldman Sachs but do not see it. Our country is becoming one of the most corrupt on earth.

Just playing games

The Rules committee cleared the amendment at 3 a.m., but a copy had been filed the previous morning. Unless Waxman changed it overnight, I got a copy from the Rules Cmte site on Thursday afternoon.

You have been had.

I don't even get annoyed anymore...

...when trolls and fools says things like "Real Americans" (as if incorrect capitalization makes the point more strongly). People like this, of limited intellect and grammatical abilities, who cast stones about a "tax-cheat" treasury secretary when they elected an illegal-drug abusing, draft-dodging president, simply can't be taken seriously. I hope Democrats in power are coming to understand this more and more. The recent terrorist acts by the fringes of this group will hopefully wake up those who have tolerated their hate, lies and manipulation for so long in the name of bipartisanship.

I for one am tired of real, effective policy being raped by idiot and tweets.

Matt Tahibi

,

This article ,which is many pages long, tells us the history of us the citizens being robbed by sachmans and right up to their newest scheme to rob the taxpayers along with the administration and their help from treasury and executives from goldmans working on this latest robbery. Just to remind people Matt was a big supporter of Obama and cheerleader.

THIS BILL IS A HUGE TAX ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.....

Democrat Warren Buffet calls it a "huge regressive Tax." It will cost each household between $1200. and $2500. per year more for the energy they consume. There are many intrusive parts to this bill that the public does not know about and if they had enough brains to research this fraud boondoggle, they would certainly march on Washington DC with pitchforks in hand. For instance, homes cannot be sold until they conform to the new standards for a "green" home. Homeowners must bring them to code before they can be put on the market. This bill is designed to make a few filthy rich, or RICH-ER. Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, General Electric. Australia had a similar bill but scrapped it after they lost millions of jobs after it was implemented. Only a FOOL would vote for this piece of *hit and only a demented fool would want them to.

It is not likely to make it out of the Senate, thank God!
