A bit?

"Nixon could be a bit of a racist."

You're either a racist or you're not. Nixon was a racist. He was a sickening man. A blight on the history of the Presidency for sure.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:03 PM

@diddlydoo

Yes, he was loathsome. He also was smart, which in some ways made him even more dangerous than the clueless Reagan and the arrogant, clueless Dubya.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:07 PM

This is NO surprise...

Yet another talking head for the Republican Party. This is typical, as well as current, which is why they are in such turmoil.

They will not recover, as in a dozen years or so, white men will be the minority in this country.

R.I.P. Republican Party.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:12 PM

they don't call him Tricky Dick for nothing

Nixon proves himself as always timely and relevant to 21st Century Repubs by managing to shoot himself in the foot from beyond the grave.

Or is it just a coincidence, and he's following the lead of McCain and others?

Neat trick, either way.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:12 PM

Have to wonder how late the term could be?

Up to how many months along do you think Nixon supported abortion for bi-racial people? I'm guessing its open ended.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:25 PM

OMG a racist republican?!

You don't say!

What about that progressive southern strategy?

(The only thing that I was shocked to learn about Nixon was that he was a Quaker.)

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:29 PM

of course

I'm sure Nixon only meant a white mother and a black father. The US has a long history of allowing black women to carry children of white men.

(And this reminds me of a comment from an earlier thread: the forced-birther stance probably has a racist component to it. For some, it's all rooted in protecting the supremacy of the white race, whatever that is).

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:48 PM

Nixon, a racist?

No kidding. Remenber, Dick Cheney cut his political teeth in Nixon's Whitehouse.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:55 PM

Surprise, Surprise

Nothing has changed in 40 years.

Don't forget though, many people claim to belong to the rethug party simply because they purport to be anti-choice. Or "pro-life." You betcha. What has the rethug party EVER done to reduce the number of abortions in this country? N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Ever. Well, besides assassinating doctors, of course. However, the Dems (progressives, liberals, etc.) are labeled as immoral, blood-thirsty, murdering, ungodly, damned-to-hell-for-all time, monsters because they actually work to reduce the number of and need for abortions and for those abortions that are performed to be performed safely.

Rethugs have always been, at their core, hypocrites and liars. Just ask readerx2.

This stuff is penny-ante compared to...

This morning, NPR re-played the "smoking gun" tape in which Nixon tells Haldeman to enlist the CIA in calling the FBI off the Watergate investigation. This is the 37th anniversary of that conversation.

It was chilling to hear again. This country elected a complete sociopath as its president.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 03:58 PM

Morbo is pleased, but sticky

These tapes make the Futurama characterization of Nixon look like a documentary. Since he's no longer a threat, it's cause to laugh.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 04:03 PM

@rm2gro

You think he was the only one?

Using Understatement as Humor

"Nixon could be a bit of a racist." That's a joke, people. Of course Nixon's a racist -- we've known that for decades.

I swear, some people can't understand a joke unless it's followed by a smiley emoticon...

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 04:35 PM

I gotta give credit to Nixon for one thing:

recording everything. Are we going to get anything similar from Bush II in 30 years? I'm not asking rhetorically. Did Bush record his conversations? Keep notes from sensitive meetings? We know they destoyed the CIA torture tapes.

On a related matter: What's with the drip, drip, drip of Nixon tapes? I swear, like twice a year we get another crazy Nixon conversation. Is it just that it takes a long time to listen to them all? How long have they been declassified?

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 04:41 PM

Tricky Dick...

the gift that keeps on giving.

@underanothername

“Don't forget though, many people claim to belong to the rethug party simply because they purport to be anti-choice. Or "pro-life." ”

What you need to keep in mind is that ALL “principled” positions espoused by Republicans are completely elastic, situational, and contingent upon affected demographics and/or political convenience.

For example:

Like Nixon, conservative pundit, confirmed Neocon and avid Republican party supporter, William Bennett would also make an exception to his “pro-life” posture if the aborted babies happen to be black:

For further evidence of this phenomenon, see today’s valuable insight provided by Salon’s resident “splainer” of all things Republican, anonymous Wingnut, “Glenallen Walken”.

The gift that keeps on giving

I love the Nixon Tapes. That window into the Republican soul is simply unmatched. Be it hilarious or frightening, they always deliver.

And any tape with Billy Graham? Hijinks ensue! Cue the laugh track.

cjackb

I wouldn't hold your breath. Most of Bush's cabinet were former Nixon flunkies. They learned never to keep a record. The scariest thing about Bush is that he isn't even the worst the GOP has to offer. And Nixon was practically a liberal compared to him!

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 11:46 PM

Nixon and abortion

It's ironic, but Nixon tried to replace Abe Fortas, the hated Jew on the Supreme Court, first with arch-segregationist Clement Haynsworth, then after that failed, with the notoriously mediocre G. Harrold Carswell. Carswell had 58% of his opinions overturned on appeal. It was not discovered until years later that he was also in the closet. A dozen Republicans had voted against each choice.

Finally the Trickster settled on Harry Blackmun, who sailed through Senate confirmation 94-0 and who was to write the decision in Roe v. Wade.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 08:33 AM

Ah, Dick

Crazy, racist, sexist, criminal, yep, Nixon was a real piece of work.

But boy was he one hell of an effective politician that first term.

Yep, and we allowed a fucking retard to be APPOINTED in 2000.

Worked out well for us as the asshole brought along a VP (string puller) that learned so much from Nixon and later Reagan. I used to think that Bush was the worst thing that happend to this country until I started looking at the entire Republican party after Goldwater. Jesus, what a bunch of thoughtless, heartless, jackasses.

If my wife wasn't so dead set on being near grandkids when they come I'd hightail it for Europe. At least I know that Bush and Cheney will never set foot there.
