Cheney's not the only one -- Ted Olson, former Solicitor General whose wife died on 9/11, is part of an effort to reverse Prop 8 in California. There are Republicans out there who think that the economic issues are paramount and that they are foolish to drive people away on the social issues.
I agree. As the Dems run up worse and worse debt, take over the auto industry, and threaten to nationalize health care, we need another more conservative economic message unencumbered by social issues.
I grant Cheney may - in this rare, nay, first instance - be sincere, when he speaks about his daughter and the right she should have. BUT, he castles that move on the board with the states right maneuver. The man who virtually ran the administration of a party that was gung ho for Constitutional Amendment XXVII asserts this is a states' right matter, knowing damned well most gays and lesbians in America, without benefit of federal law, will not likely live to see gay marriage recognized in their resident states.
Cheney is infinitely more despicable than any other political figure of my entire franchised lifetime; to exploit one's own daughter in this cynically calibrated way is beyond the pale.
Since he decided to run for president, Obama has never stated that he supported the right of gay people to marry (although he did support it when he was a state senator). After the Iowa Supreme Court ruling, Obama reiterated his belief that marriage was only between a man and a woman (without any note of encouragement or celebration for the couples who won their rights that day). Not only is Obama not supportive of gay marriage and supportive of civil unions instead, he goes out of his way to make that known. So if the options are Cheney's "I support gay marriage but think it should be left to the states" or Obama's "I'm opposed to gay marriage but think it should be left to the states", Cheney is clearly more progressive on this issue. Give him some credit (he rarely deserves it). And let's start calling out Obama for what is more and more of a "conservative" opinion. His politically calculated stance on the issue gives cover to every Republican out there who wants to oppose gay marriage, as they all increasingly point out they agree with Obama on the issue.
He acted like he was ashamed.
I guess his gay daughter is a good thing sometimes, and no so good other times. Depends on the audience.
Being raised in a household with such a coward for a father, being continually used as just a birth to convenience avoiding the draft, being looked at as a birth of reason to avoid compulsory service to your country for the benefit of your “too scared daddy” I can’t imagine growing of Cheney’s daughter was much pleasure. Looking at Dick or Vagina Cheney, take your pick, approach to life, one can imagine when a strange sound was heard outside Lynn Cheney went to investigate while Dick or Vagina, take your pick, his behind the door asking, in a whispered voice “did you see anything”?
While my love for the female anatomy (what can I say, I am a man and I make no excuses) is so dedicated I find myself not blaming women for choosing women as mates, they are wonderful to behold, I feel that this daughter did not have much choice: Somebody had to be the damn man of the house! It is blatantly obvious there was no man located at that address, just somebody with a penis. Damn COWARD!
I applaud Cheney for this. I'm not sure what all of that stammering actually means in terms of his exact position, but I applaud him on this neverthelss.
This is where conservatives ought to be intellectually on this issue. Andrew Sullivan made the case for them YEARS ago. It makes them much more credible on a whole host of other issues about limiting the role of government.
It also highlights what most gay people already know. Once straight people know of a close family member or friend who is gay, their opposition to gay civil rights tends to dissolve.
Bill Clinton, to date also an opponent of same sex marrriage, recently said his opinions on the subject were "evolving". You can bet so are his wife's views as well. Her opposition to marriage was always about political expediency.
This is truly a watershed year in the same-sex marriage debate.
....and Hitler loved dogs.
Few monsters ever see themselves as such. The fact that Cheney doesn't understand that, say, Iraqis are people too--as well as his beloved homosexual daughter--just makes him more of a monster, not less of one. Because he can exercise his feelings only when he is directly touched.
Even a monster needs a heart; even a monster has blood.
I don't give a fuck what Cheney says or believes - aside from giving Sonoflop another chance to trot out anti-Obama statements in his/her neverending faux gay hand wringing, what does it matter? Cheney supports states' rights in determination of same sex marriage. It doesn't bring him left of anything...
Dick Cheney on their side.
Cheney isn't to the left of Obama.
Obama is to the right of Cheney.
That's what we voted for, right?
This sounds like exactly the position he took on this matter in 2000.
oh no... my bleary eyes. he said 'People ought to get a shot at that.' how tempting would it be to transcribe it such?
He could have run for President, but he didn't. He was a sitting VP, he was in the perfect position. But no.
Maybe he changed his mind lately and is campaigning for 2012? Is that what this is all about?
Otherwise - I respectfully request that he "move on". After all, if he's not "with us" then he's "against us", and you know what that means..........
Doubt it. Even tho' Obama may not SUPPORT same sex marriage, he is NOT in favor of forbidding states from making their own decisions on the issue. See his lack of support for anti-gay marriage amendment to constitution. So it looks to me like their level of support (or lack there of) is about the same.
