Majority of GOP insiders say Cheney hurting party

A poll of Republican operatives finds that they believe the former vice president's sudden outspokenness isn't helping them.

The letters thread is now closed.

Since when has Republican insanity been a bad thing?

OK, so who's an "Insider"?

Do they carry special ID cards, or are they on a registry of Insiders?

I'm not complaining about the results, of course. It's just that it sounds like sloppy methodology no matter whose Insiders we're goring. How many people does it take to make up a group of Insiders? Is the definition of an Insider somebody who would actually return a phone call? This just sounds like another example of the Washinghton DC elites back-patting themselves with "conventional wisdom."

(And by the way, Chicken, thanks for that line)

Cheney = endless war and cronyism

Cheney exemplifies war profiteering, intolerance, class warfare, and the idea of an imperialist presidency. Arrogant pr*ck. If the man has ever read the US Constitution that he swore to uphold, it would surprise me.

I address him with his own words: "Go f**k yourself." His other best-remembered quote should also be his epitaph: "So?"

Gotterdammerung for the GOP

Cold warriors using Stalinist interrogation enhancements -- how can that happen?

Valhalla's burning from the hypocrisy.

No, Republicans, he's not helping you. He's made a mockery of everything Reagan Republicans ever claimed to believe in.

Friday, May 15, 2009 09:14 AM

Now We Know Who The REAL Republicans Are

In all, 57 percent of respondents said Cheney has hurt the GOP, while 33 percent said he's helped it.

I guess they'd be that 33%. Eventually, the GOP will be three bitter old men meeting in Rush Limbaugh's garage. But man, will they be pure.

No One Can hurt The GOP Now

If you are going to lose 90 percent plus of the black vote and 70 percent of the Hispanic vote, you're dead. Anyone running their mouth in public is good for them, loosely defining "good". It reminds people there still is a republican party.

Friday, May 15, 2009 09:14 AM

The GOP is now the 3rd party in the US.

Democrats and Independents are now tied in this country as the 2 most affiliated groups with the GOP coming in a distant 3rd.

The Republicans are now a "fringe" political element in this country, so why are they given so much air time to run their mouths?

Please, fade away and take your "insiders" with you.

Publish the full list...

How do we know those listed aren't in the "33% that believe Cheney is helping the party and the others are of Sen. Arlen Specter's ilk? Ask voting Americans, not Washington insiders hoping to get an invitation to Saturday's gala event at the Smithsonian. Ask Americans that don't receive money from taxpayers. Ask American's who's jobs are being shipped overseas as companies leave the 2nd highest corporate tax nation in the world.

Ask DEM insiders if Speaker Peloci is hurting her party?

The gossip at Washington cocktail parties does not represent "We the People," but it is obvious Alex Koppelman represents Washington insiders.

Publish the full list... if you dare. So much for transparency.

I don't see how they can recover

Republicans like Cheney spent the entire Cold War bashing liberals as apologists for Stalin.

Yet here is Dick Cheney, copying from the NKVD interrogation manual.

It just blows the mind. I can't see the GOP recovering from such a vivid public refutation of the ideals they not only espoused but shoved into the faces of liberals for decades.

And it's not just the torture. America is now the most incarcerated nation in the world.

Almost every adult in this country has had to drop his or her drawers and urinate into a cup in order to get a job -- thanks to a mandate by the federal government.

Who won the Cold War?

They don't have to pee in a cup to get a job in Russia, and they never did.

No Way???

The GOP understands an obvious truth? Oh gees, reason is seeping in.....

@ Realist1999

Um, did you read the post? Did you see the blue text indicating a link to the source for this post, the survey at the National Journal's Web site? The lists of the polled "insiders" are right there on that page. No one is hiding anything, but it would be much more convenient and easier for you to change the subject if they were.

Now as to the issue at hand, do you really believe Cheney and the stances he is taking are going to attract more voters to the Republican Party? If so, what makes you believe his message has such a broad appeal?

Not agreeing with GOP=liberal bias

As a "biased liberal," I couldn't be happier to see Cheney acting as the spokesman for the Republican party.

He's almost as good as Rush Limbaugh.

I love his snarling, out-of-touch paranoia. Seems to me he's a perfect symbol for the GOP.

The part that's funniest though is GOP members who are trying to claim liberal bias is behind polls showing Cheney is hurting the party.

This is funny because I think most liberals couldn't be happier to see Cheney center stage.

And, it shows the absurdity of their "liberal bias" claims which have come to be used so often every time someone doesn't agree with them, that these old chestnuts just sound tiresome and unbelievable.

When all you hear from a party is "liberal bias, liberal bias, liberal bias" (everyone is out to get us), even the diehard faithful will eventually start to wonder if they have anything else to say.

excuse me

I believe protocol requires that the Republican Party apologize for putting its face in the way of the former Vice President's shotgun volleys.

Friday, May 15, 2009 09:58 AM

no big deal

It's hard to hurt something that's already dying.

Friday, May 15, 2009 10:04 AM

Are these the same GOP insiders?

Are these the same guys that were behind the GOP forgetting it's core values and spending like drunkin sailors while in power? Are these the same guys that dominated the GOP the past 8 years? Are these the same guys who ran the McCain caimpaign? Are these the same guys behind McCain's nomination in the first place? Are these the same guys that even Colin Powell couldn't support in the last election? So Mr Koppleman with a track record like thiers why is thier opinion now worth anything? Maybe Cheney should speak.

liberal bias

Those activists show just how out of touch they are with reality by continuing to harp on the nonexistent liberal bias in the news industry.

Friday, May 15, 2009 10:05 AM

Dick Cheney does not give a fuck what you think

And that, is that.

Friday, May 15, 2009 10:11 AM

The GOP's Insane Activist Base

Would maintain Dick is helping the party if he took a crap on the Constitution on the nightly news. Oh, wait, isn't that what he's been doing for the last 8 years?
