Edwards hits record low poll numbers

North Carolinians strongly disapprove of their former senator, who continues to be dogged by his affair and questions surrounding it.

The letters thread is now closed.

Not a Fan of Edwards

Edwards ran for the Democratic nomination, knowing that he had a huge skeleton in his closet which would certainly be brought to light if he got the nomination (or, as it turns out, even if he didn't). In other words, he was prepared to hand the election to the Republicans. His political career should be put permanently to rest.

Why are they taking a poll about him anyway?

Didn't he quit politics?

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 11:24 AM

He's mostly OK

I have only one problem with Mr. Edwards, and it's not his affair. Everyone makes mistakes, he just saved the BIG mistake for late in life, while I made that kind of 'mistake' while I was a teenager. HOWEVER, speaking as a neighbor, his is the only property on our road where the power company doesn't cut back the trees around the power lines. We have had some cable problems because his stupid trees (that nobody else is allowed to have) f*** up our cable and internet. Also our kids got redisctricted into a different school last year, and we suspect it's because Elizabeth wanted HER kids in that school, and our kids go to the same school. Also they used to have loud parties when UNC had their homecoming game, but that seems to have petered out the last year or so. Otherwise they are nice folks who drive their own kids to a public school, and all the teachers say they are easy people to deal with. I know they go to a lot more of those nighttime school events than I ever will.

I'm saying a little prayer that he'll make a comeback...

...so that we can watch him self-destruct again.

And I am betting on the comeback, too. Does anybody think the guy is just going to live the rest of his life quietly, without the massive external ego gratification he apparently requires? Can't happen. He'll be back. Not enough bad can possibly happen to that guy.

and yet

David Vitter is still in the Senate.

Elephantman Hearts John Edwards

Does anybody think the guy is just going to live the rest of his life quietly, without the massive external ego gratification he apparently requires?

In that trait, he reminds me of you, Dick Cheney, and your goddess Sarah Palin.

Not enough bad indeed!

DrJay is right

I donated a modest amount to Edwards campaign, but we dodged a bullet when he lost. He was willing to risk giving the Republicans the White House because he is so narcissistic he couldn't imagine that his tawdry affair would almost certainly cost him the general election. What a twit.

I'll bet my favorability rating is even lower

If people in North Carolina were polled about me, I'd be lucky to get a 5% favorability.

So Edwards isn't doing so badly. He does need damage control -- for his split ends! Have you seen his hair lately? Mop top!

I think John Edwards and Blagojevich should hook up with Paul and Ringo for a revival of "Rubber Soul."

Who Cares?

I thought this dude had retired from politics? Meanwhile, Larry Craig is still in the Senate and still cheating on his wife with other closeted gay dudes in public restrooms, right?

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 12:15 PM

He used f'in' political funds for his f'in'. That is not okay.

I have no position on the adultery beyond it being the business of the people involved, not mine. I'm not someone who says cheating on a spouse instantly insures a politician will cheat the American people.

But Edwards did cheat the American people. He used his campaign funds to cart her around for his, and at least one of his campaign partner's, pleasure, and then to buy her a house, a very expensive house, and set her up royally. If it was on his dime, it would be his private business, but it was on the dime of the people who believed in the integrity of his campaign. That's pretty damn scandalous.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 12:24 PM

Why

Got to wonder why anyone is even taking poll numbers their is no election. A stupid waste of time.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 12:26 PM

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Look, its bad enough that EE is profiting off this mess. Why do we need to keep treating him as newsworthy? Seems to me there are 2 types of people -- those of us who poured our hearts, bodies, and pocketbooks into his campaign and are extremely hurt by what he did and wish he would go away forever; and those who don't care. Who the heck wants to keep reading this mess?

This is America - he must be pilloried, whipped and chained in the stocks

He must be stripped of all property, sent to prison and branded. And in 10 years after his wife his dead and his kids are homeless we can feel the gush of divine smug and holy self righteousness.

John Edwards = Newt Gingrich

Edwards has become the Democratic party's Newt Gingrich, i.e., a guy who once had a dazzlingly successful political career ahead of him, but who frittered it away.

In Newt's case, he turned out to be a hugely ineffective Speaker of the House, and his political fortunes took a corresponding downturn.

And Edwards caused his own downfall by his inability to control his sexual impulses.

Newt has become the GOP's elder statesman, but he'll never make another successful election run.

I suspect Edwards will assume the same role for the Democrats, in time. His political career is basically toast.

What makes me wonder, though, is why Elizabeth Edwards wrote that intimate book and why she is making the rounds of the morning and evening news shows, touting her book and talking pretty frankly about her marriage.

Is she getting back at John by talking about his peccadilloes publicly?

Is she trying to raise money so she can dump him and live her own life?

Does she have an ego to match his?

inside of a walnut

There is not much inside of a brain the size of a walnut. If he can't get it right, he can't get it at all. His approval rating is at 0% so what he says is not worth a grain of salt. Too bad the media covers him for days after he wakes up and makes a big hoopla about his mouth. Let a speeping dog lay in his grave. He dug it , let him lay in it.

@GW in Ohio

Edwards is not Gingrich for the simple reason that he's staying out of the spotlight. He isn't trying to set himself up for another political run, he's not publicly changing his religion. He's paying a much higher price than any Republican has in recent years for having an affair, let alone torturing people or starting (and LOSING) a war.

What Elizabeth is up to I have no idea. She's been through a lot of hell - losing a son, having new kids, cancer, cheating, and now more cancer. I'm certainly in no position to judge somebody who's been through all that.

I sure as HELL would rather live next door to the Edwards than the Gingrichs, Bushs, Reagans or Cheneys.
