The handshake heard 'round the world

Conservatives are up in arms over President Obama's having acknowledged Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

The letters thread is now closed.

Flipping out over a handshake, how stupid.

The Republicans are nothing but a bunch of fat, tired old frat boys who think snubbing someone is a sign of strength and superiority. Nothing could be further from the truth. They don't know how to be gracious to someone who doesn't toe their party line. What a bunch of hicks. We should be proud for having voted that pathetic way of thinking out of power. Let them whine all they want. It's their nature to cry like a spoiled brat when they can't have their way.

one more thing, dingy

Kennedy shook hands with Kruschev and smiled

Nixon shook hands with Mao and smiled

Reagan shook hands with Gorbachev and smiled

Bush 43 kissed the Saudi prince on the lips and held hands. For all we know, the Prince teabagged him later.

Bush 43 gave a fucking backrub to Angela Merkel

where was your outrage for any of these?

You righties are a bunch of ill-mannered children who need to be smacked.

ding dong

I'm sorry for your thinking skills, really. That said, I'm thankful that you are not, nor ever will be, in a position of any kind that is of national importance or consequence.

BTW:

Hitler was appointed, not elected

Stalin was appointed, not elected

I believe, but do not know for certain, that Hussein was elected by a committee, not in a democratic general election. Maybe somebody has info on this?

Castro came to power in an armed revolt against a brutal dictator. He was not elected.

It is stronger to meet your adversary face to face, and not shirk. Bush shirked. By swagger and bully, he proved only that he was a coward. Although you seem to favor this approach, terrorism around the world spiked in the last 8 years *because* of this.

Maybe you had better quit looking to hollywood movies and 24 for your socio-political awareness. It is not serving you well, as evidenced by your rather simplistic analysis and weak grasp of facts.

Actually, dingy, it would be best for everybody (including yourself) if you would just shut up and pay attention for a while.

@Ufansius

Time will tell. The US should advocate for itself. Chavez and Ortega certainly did not wave thier dirty laundry or even acknowledge it for a reason. When you finish High School you may understand why. It is also hard to win at poker if you insist on showing everybody at the table your cards before the hands are called or everybody even anties up. I understand how the enemy of enemy may be your friend and Chavez,Amoudenijhad,Ortega and the like opposed Bush. They are not true friends to the US and this was true before Bush. The election is over and Obamas job is to represent and advocate for us to our best interest. Chavez was given a propaganda victory for not a good enough reason. Obama represents the US interests in the world and it's been wrong how he's handled it recently. Hillary warned of this and we should learn the lesson or prepare for the consequences. People make mistakes and it is scary that many here are unable to see any fault with Obama. Nobody is perfect.

"Did you miss the gracious President Chavez call President Obama an "ignoramus" just a month ago?"

If I remember correctly, he said that because Obama asserted that Venezuela supports terrorism... Which is a pretty ignorant statement all around. There may be some hidden ties between Chavez's people and the FARCs in Colombia, but seeing as he has acted to try to reduce FARC reliance on armed violence and kidnappings, it seems like he's doing his job in reducing terrorism (or more accurately, armed guerrilla campaigns) in the region... I'm guessing his attempts to bring the far left into the political process in Colombia will be more productive than Obama's/Gates's use of indiscriminate bombings of Af-Pak villages via unmanned drones to fight Central Asia's armed factions.

So maybe he was right.

@Obamalamadingdong

"In the Godfather movie Vito Corleone said "keep your friends close your enemies closer" but he also slapped Sonny's face and scolded him for giving someone outside the family an insight into it.I recall that did not turn out to well either."

This quote that you've used to shore up your "argument" speaks volumes. It's from a film (which isn't real life, btw) for one thing, but we'll let that pass for now. What's revealing is that you're offering an example of the methods of a criminal enterprise as the model that our government should emulate in its interactions with other sovereign governments. While I agree that such an example would have been appropriate for the Bush administration, I'm hopeful (as I suspect the majority who voted for Obama is) that the Obama administration would seek to emulate statesmanlike behavior rather than the machinations of a crime boss.

Perhaps you can't tell the difference, Obamalamadingdong. Or do you just not care?

GOP are a bunch of whining 3-year olds,

That is why, to them, acting like a civilized adult is a sign of weakness.

Obama will look weak if he doesn't stand up to these impudent upstarts

I suggest a cruise missile strike on the Texas Governor's Mansion, and the extraordinary renditioning of Ron Paul to Guantanamo, inmediatamente.

@nancerich

Did you miss the gracious President Chavez call President Obama an "ignoramus" just a month ago? We must have got your mommies copy of Pollyticks fer Dum childrenz instead. Obama was not smart this weekend. The strong leaders do not take crap in public from the little peoples in the cubicles,that is what they give them offices for. Reaching out with an open hand is one thing . Letting them set you up and work you over like a cheap divorce lawyer is another. He should have been bigger than that with Chavez,it's being seen as weakness in the eyes of our adversaries. Maybe he still belongs in the cubicle and should let Hillary handle the diplomatic things for a while. In the Godfather movie Vito Corleone said "keep your friends close your enemies closer" but he also slapped Sonny's face and scolded him for giving someone outside the family an insight into it.I recall that did not turn out to well either.

It would be a mistake for any lawyer to go to a hearing let others trash his client,and just sit there and agree and not rise to defend a client against such wild claims. The President represents the United States,it's his job. It's a mistake for Obama to continue to act like he has and go along with the trashing of the United States,whether or not he believes it. It is not serving his client. He should be standing up and pointing out some of our positive contributions. He should be confronting those who bash us with thier own records of oppression and human rights violations. The right thing is to move it beyond the rhetoric,not enable propagandist. He was a great debater I thought,what happened? We elected him to make our case not sell us out. He won the election and he needs to change from candidate to President quickly or it could come back to haunt us all.
