Now Rick Perry really is talking about secession

The Texas governor is on a roll lately, first signing on with the fringe state sovereignty movement and then going even further.

The letters thread is now closed.

Help Rick Perry - Expel Texas!!

Birth of a movement?

Saturday, April 18, 2009 06:42 AM

Send him to Prison!

Just as the leaders of the Confederacy, were criminals. So is this man! He should be tried for treason, and locked up once and for all!

We do not need secessionists in this country. When left wingers protested against the Viet Nam War and Bush's terror campaign, they were considered enemies of the state. Now it's their turn. The Right Wing is no longer running this country, they need to be told plain and simple. Arresting Gov.Perry would do just that!

@author_industry_of_thieves

The US doesn't "need" Texas.

Countries have formed and dissolved for eons and somehow things seem to work out.

Nothing to be scared of, Texas will do fine and the rest of America will do fine.

Apparently this administration takes border issues seriously enough to put some muscle and money in it as well as overtures to Mexico- you know, the same government that your simple minded governor wants peel off from? And making braggado statements about handling the border issues isn't exactly calling my shit - I seriously don't imagine that there are that many newly independent Texans that would relish standing at the border with shot guns picking off mexicans as a way to control the border. Which is why talk of succession is ridiculous and beneath a man who a elected official.

@ debbieqd

Just to be fair to Gooberatorial Perry, I believe threats of secession are properly considered "sedition," not "treason."

"Migration to/from Texas was predominantly white."

Well now that's an unfair racist inference to make, isn't it? I didn't say anything about the COLOR of the immigrants. I was talking about their ethnicity and native language.

Perhaps you didn't know that Spanish-speakers can be "white"?

"And I guess you've never been to California if you think it's English-speaker dominated."

Well, you guessed wrong.

I'm quite familiar with CA, which is why I specified that *most* of the big blue states are dominated by English speakers.

California, being the exception, isn't.

But you don't disagree with me about the prevalence of Spanish in Tejas, do you? I haven't spent more than a few weeks in a row there, but there were even more Spanish-speakers there than I see in my neighborhood in Brooklyn, and that's saying something!

Would that be the Lone Star Nation's official language, you think? Or you think you could somehow hang on to English for a few more decades?

Yes, I read the thread and I agree with you 100%. There is no need for the Texans are redneck fatties, etc. any more than there is the need for New Yorkers are anti-American socialist that's thrown around. I prefer to leave my irrational hatred to sports teams, such as those dirty, dirty Red Soxs.

Real Texan speaks out

1. I dispute the author's claim that it's common belief in Texas that we have the right to leave the Union at will. No one I know thinks that, and those of us who grew up here got a full year of Texas History back in junior high.

2. We apparently did reserve the right to split into 5 states to increase our political influence, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

3. We are the ONLY state to enter the Union by TREATY with a sovereign country (Republic of Texas), not purchase, conquest, or other means. We are the only state that can fly its flag as high as the US flag. And our Capitol is taller, too - pbthth!

4. Not all of us are Republicans. Did you notice that the Dems have been victorious in many, many elections here ... including a near-total rout of the Dallas County judiciary in 2006, and significant victories in the 2008 Harris County judicial elections?

5. I don't trash your state because of a few highly-placed idiots *cough*Ventura*cough*Ah-nold*cough*Blago*cough*. Please return the favor. I'm no fan of Perry, either.

6. Fortunately for us, the Governor of Texas is one of the weakest political offices in the state. If you really want to run the show here, you shoot for Lieutenant Governor. The reasons behind that fact are rather interesting :)

@NYkickedoutoftheunion

What would you like us to do, cower in the corner, wail and cry at the current administration not to let Texas leave? Would that make you feel better?

No, we would just like you to not call us backwards racist redneck dumbfuck fatties. Thank you.

(I know you specifically did not say these things, but really, did you read the thread?)

oh and LABC63, don't lecture Texans about serious border issues. We know all about it and no one takes it lightly. You suggested that Texans would not be able to defend the border by ourselves (as if the federal gov't is doing it for us now) and I simply called bullshit on that. Also, coonskin hats are kinda cool in a weird retro way, don't you think? I wouldn't wear one though since I'm not a "him."

@Ronnica

Work and live in NYC, I have not been taxed out yet, nor has the business for which I work. And in about 5 minutes, I'm going to go out for lunch and complete business transactions that I can completely afford. Thanks for your concern though. Look, no one is asking Texas to leave. It's your govenor, your elected offical threatening secession. What would you like us to do, cower in the corner, wail and cry at the current administration not to let Texas leave? Would that make you feel better?

One More Public Threat Like This...and Perry Should be Arrested

But note: He took the stimulus money and his transporation department is asking the government it hates for billions more for high speed rail. Hypocrisy AND treason? It's more than one can stomach.
