Obama wants $83.4 billion for Iraq, Afghanistan

If Congress approves the president's request, the total cost of the two wars will reach almost $1 trillion.

The letters thread is now closed.

How much to bring everybody and everything home?

Defend our borders, not sleaze into a worldwide dictatorship in the name of liberty.

This isn't the change we expected

People voted for Obama for various reasons, but he seems like he is going to dissappoint alot of supporters, and the McCain/Palin voters hate him, so what will happen?

People support the stimulous, but alot of that is trickle down stuff. For Example in Cleveland our local transit will get $, but only for capital improvements, while routes are cut and fares are rising. Retirees cant get to medical appts. We dont need news buildings now, we need help today.

Change you expected?

"This isn't the change we expected"

No, it isn't the change YOU expected. It is EXACTLY what I expected because it is exactly what he said he would do. He said he would enact a planned withdrawal from Iraq subject to the situation on the ground. He is doing that. He said he would send more troops to Afgahnistan to oppose our real enemy, Al Qaida, and prevent radical Islamic forces from taking control of that vulnerable country or it's neighbor Pakistan. That is what he said he would do. That is what he is doing. So tell me again, what exactly is your issue?

Bring 'em home?

"How much to bring everybody and everything home?"

Well, it would cost several billion dollars to shut down all the bases and bring all the troops home. THEN it would cost several billion dollars in damage from the next Al Qaida attack since they would be able to operate freely in Afghanistan. THEN it would cost several trillion in economic damages from the fallout of that attack. Seems to me that it is better to spend the money up front and prevent that.

Yup, Taliban, Al Qeada and ISI

want nothing more than to deliver a nuclear device, courtesy of Pakistan/ISI, to American soil.

I'm With Jiggs

President Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do during the campaign. Anyone feigning surprise at this point wasn't listening during the campaign.

How disappointing!

Seems like no matter who we vote for or which party, the people lose. You caved, Obama. Shame on you!!!!

How much did W. Bush spend last year?

We need a figure to compare. How much (with reference, please)? We need to know before we judge.

@anntink aka A-Pox-On-Both-Your-Houses

Caved? To what? To whom? Who or what exactly has President Obama "caved" to?

Thursday, April 9, 2009 04:12 PM

This is just a result of the process

I don't think people should get their panties in a bunch on this. He doesn't have money to keep the operations going and his budget doesn't kick in until Congress finishes appropriations so he has to use the same process Bush did.

I don't think there is much else they can do here.

the more things change the more they stay the same

Obama is doing the very same thing which he criticized Bush.

Pottery Barn rule

Remember, Colin Powell warned us: You break it, it's yours.

Iraq is now ours. We're responsible for invading a sovereign country and bombing the daylights out of it.

Now we're responsible to fixing the mess we made. Pretty simple.

(By the way, I have been against this damned war from the very beginning.)

@ohiopolitico

Please enlighten us as to which illegal and unnecessary wars President Obama has started.

Balking???

I'm sure that the party of "NO" will also balk and give some pushback, too. But if any of the congress or senate balk now, they don't need to be re-elected. These are not Obama's wars, but he must carry them through to completion. And he's stepping up to the plate to do just that! The "real war" has always been in Afghanistan, and the "real terrorists" are still running around in that area. If there is anyone that still doesn't know that left in Washington, then they shouldn't be in Washington! And "we the people" can fix that!!!!

I for one feel that war is the LAST resolution, But I stand behind Obama on this. The Senate and Congress approved ALL of Bush's war money, and now is not the time to vote against war funding!!!!!!!!!

If only

the former President told the truth.

MWD's and 9/11 evil doers did not have to be the excuse. ~Wonder if 'humanitarianism' might have sounded better.

Then again, it wasn't a bow, it happened over a week ago...

Belief in & Respect for our President is 'American' ~as is thinking and speaking.

Afghanistan existed, --"we took our eye off" of it,

Iraq is Bush's war,

and,

the economy has faltered.

...President Obama has to finish the war he got stuck with and fix us financially.

During a debate with John McCain, (then Senator) Obama basically threatened that Pakistan had to cooperate with us (or else)...

and

Senator Obama signed the Bush bail-out.

~So sending at least four thousand more troops, and leaving thousands of troops there after the scheduled departure date, continuing (and increasing) bail-outs (recovery plan) is transparent change

--in exactly what way?
