Obama makes surprise visit to Iraq

Closing out his big foreign tour, the president made an unannounced stop in the country Tuesday.

The letters thread is now closed.

Did he bring a fake ham with him?

As we've learned from the previous administration, nothing says "Thanks!" like plastic food...

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 07:43 AM

Can he please stay?

I for one will welcome our Red Chinese, Venezuelan or Russian liberators.

I would like to apply for a job operating a Guillotine. I want to do my part to restore and preserve America.

Let Obama run Iraq and Afghanistan and let the people clean up the mess that he refuses to deal with.

INDICT!

CHOP!

I eagerly await

I eagerly await all the Salonistas calling Obama a coward for not pre-announcing his trip to Iraq, as they did every time Bush or Cheney visited unannounced.

@Slim Pickins

I guess I must have missed those letters.

But, I'll go on record as saying that it's probably not a good idea for any President to announce a visit to a place where there's still lots of bombing and shooting going on.

(At least Obama wasn't the one who started the bombing and shooting, though. I will give him that.)

@Slim Pickins

I'll be glad to as soon as Obama goes back in time, starts the war, then stands in front of a "Mission Accomplished" banner.

Until then, it's hardly equivalent.

Pssst,

Be sure to drop by and pick up that cargo from Afghanistan.

Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge, Know what I mean?

We got whole country we have to "sleep."

tic tic tic boooom...

You say that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is going to meet with Obama at Camp Victory, but you don't mention if he will need to go through a metal detector.

I hope he will have to be seriously scanned in some way, because this sure is a great chance for him to Martyr himself into the history books.

I'm just saying.....

Virginia Slim

If people really did critisize Bush for not announcing his trip, then I agree, it was a goofy thing to do.

But I'm guessing that it had more to do with Bush asking the insurgents to kill more of our troops. You know, when the overaged frat boy that has never been in any real danger in his life bellowed, "bring 'em on!" In that context, it seems like Bush was spoiling for a fight. So I imagine people were having fun with that.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 09:16 AM

Since Obama isn't bringing the troops home

he might as well visit them.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 09:19 AM

Actually...

I think any taunting of Bush and certain other Republicans to try strolling down the street in Baghdad was due to their talking points on how safe and secure the Iraqi people were after the surge and whatnot.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 09:19 AM

Stop apologizing for America and come home soon

Them slugs overseas are tired of hearing Baracky the Bullcrapper lambaste his adopted turf. I know, it's all Bush's fault.

Re-writing history, as usual

"I eagerly await all the Salonistas calling Obama a coward for not pre-announcing his trip to Iraq, as they did every time Bush or Cheney visited unannounced."

This poster either has a bad memory or just likes to makes things up. The criticism that would spring up when Bush would creep into Iraq was aimed at the fact that the lying and/or delusional president repeatedly claimed that things were going swimmingly in Iraq and that the country was stabilized. While there might have been one or two who expressed Bush's stealth actions as a form of cowardice, the vast majority of the criticism in this forum was simply to point out the disparity between his assessment of the situation and his actions.

Plus, as pre-announcing a visit into a combat area would just make things more stressful for the already overworked soldiers stationed in Iraq, sneaking into Iraq may have been the only honorable thing Bush and Cheney did in 8 years.

Obama is a cringing coward ....

He snuck into Iraq just like Bush. This fool should order the troops home. He was elected by anti-war voters, and now he is Bush III in black face.

Why doesn't the fool go to Iran, where he might actually be able to do some good. What? AIPAC would not approve. Oh, I see.

I wonder

How much has all of Obama's traveling cost the US taxpayers.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 10:39 AM

RE: Obama travel costs:

If total government spending were a sheet of newspaper, the piece that accounted for Obama's travel budget would be too small to see without an electron microscope.

Slim Pickens has been around Salon

a whole 5 months so he really knows alot about the history of "Salonistas".

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 11:55 AM

Surprised

I'm surprised Obama knows where Iraq is. He visited once during his two-year campaign, only after being embarrassed into it by McCain. Doesn't matter. He doesn't need to know anything in order to make a speech ... he just reads the words off the teleprompter.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 01:41 PM

@slim thinkins....

Ok, son - since it happened so often, I'm sure you have several examples of this at hand.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 01:43 PM

@chillydogg

I'm sure his traveling has cost *you* absolutely nothing.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 01:46 PM

@nitfan

welcome to Salon. I see you're alias is new here. that said, it looks like you've brought the same tired old talking points with you.

yes, Obama uses a teleprompter. So do all your heroes. What's your point? That you suffer from Obama Derangement Syndrome? OK, thanks, we got that.
