Did Jackie Mason use a racial slur against Obama?

The comedian says the word he used doesn't have negative overtones, but that's not how many people see it.

The letters thread is now closed.

It boggles the mind that words can get banned

but any moron can get a gun.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:27 AM

Oh and Jackie, try watching The Color Purple

you don't have half the talent Oprah has.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:32 AM

Uh, yeah, he's racist

That last quote pretty much explains itself.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:34 AM

"I can't even make a living"

Yeah, and that's because you're white.

Rolling eyes.

I could think of a few words to describe him that have nothing to do with his ethnicity.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:36 AM

"Schwarze" may or may not be racist...

After all, it is just the Germanic/Yiddish form of the word "black."

But Mr. Mason still comes across as a jerk, a sort of adolescent whining about somebody else's success and, like a small child, trying to see how close he can come come to saying naughty words without actually getting caught for it.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:40 AM

Yeah, Jackie Mason, 'cause you're white...

I thought it was because you are a johnny one-note comedian milking the same lame jokes from your time in the caskills so long ago. And since I can manage not to refer to jewish people as kikes, I think Mason can refrain from calling us the yiddish word for niggers - I grew up in New York, so I know exactly what that word means, you unfunny ass...

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:41 AM

While it's true

it's close to German for "black," anybody using it as Mason did who claims not to be using it in a racist way is lying.

Mason's Oprah Winfrey comments are racist

Despite his denials of being a racist, Jackie Mason appears to be just that with his comments to TMZ. In particular, his comments about Oprah Winfrey imply that she is professionally more successful because of affirmative action, rather than the reason that Ms. Winfrey is an talented entertainer who understands her audience much better than Mr. Mason. Of course comparing himself to Ms. Winfrey is absurd, as both are in different segments of the entertainment field. Mr. Mason simply comes across as a bitter man who envies Ms. Winfrey for her larger audience.

Who cares?

What that decrepit old fuck says. Ed Sullivan is calling him and want's him on right after the plate spinners.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:43 AM

I'm not a racist!

Some of my best jokes are black.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:43 AM

Perhaps blacks should learn a

Online Yiddish-English and German-English dictionaries translate 'schwartz' as 'black', which is also my recollection as onetime a German major at Cal. Last I heard 'black' wasn't pejorative.

This reminds me of the time California legislative leader Cruz Bustamente was reading a list of black organizations at a meeting for black leaders, and apparently pronounced 'negro' in one group name as the Spanish word for black, 'negra'. Many in attendance chose to hear it as the n-word and stormed out of the meeting. Much groveling and apologizing ensued.

Perhaps the problem is that offended blacks are offended due to ignorance of a 2nd language and the solution would be for them to follow Obama's suggestion that every American learn a 2nd language.

Finally, I've been waiting for the gubernator to step in it. The German word for 'negro' is 'neger', pronounced a lot like the n-word. Aside from him the possiblity of him lapsing into the German pronunciation of 'negro' in a sentence there's the fact his name basically can be rendered as 'Schwarzen - neger', or 'black negro'. The possiblities for the Al Sharptons out there are mind-boggling.

"whining about somebody else's success"

That describes liberals perfectly

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:47 AM

Oh Please

I grew up hearing this word more often than I care to think about. And while it is nowhere near as negative or offensive as the n-word (at least I don't think it is...), it is not neutral by a long shot. I got my first clue about that when my mother forbade me to use it.

Washed up, unfunny Jackie Mason obviously knows this, too, as his wandering and offensive attempt at self-defense so aptly prove. This is a guy who pretty clearly can't come to grips with the fact that the world has changed.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:49 AM

Um...

What's the Yiddish word for douchebag?

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:51 AM

YeahOKsure, what success?

Have Republicans had any success since about, oh, 2006 for Democrats to envy? Maybe you mean the cruel way that so many people are begrudging the geniuses at AIG the bonuses that they earned by throwing taxpayer money down the toilet. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket.

But Mason sure has the Rush Limbaugh line of patter down pat. Wah, wah, wah, Mommy they're being mean to me because I'm white! I can't get a job 'cause I'm white, it has nothing to do with my abilities! Wah wah wah, they're saying I can't call Obama nasty racist names just cause they're so oversensitive and they like to pick on whites! Wah wah wah.

There are good reasons Jackie Mason can't make a living

The sad thing is, he can't seem to find a mirror into which he can look to find any of them (strange that this is the case in the life of an entertainer). So, since no mirrors are available, all he can see to blame is everybody else.

Didn't your parents teach you not to do this? Mine did. I taught my children the same.

When things aren't going well in your life, the FIRST place you need to look is at yourself to see what role you have had in the way things are going. You may find that you still agree with your choices, even though they've turned out badly, in which case, they were your choices and you don't get to blame anyone else for the results.

You may find that you've been a fool and decide to change the direction of your life or change how you make choices.

You may find that you can't stop being a fool and need coaching or skilled help to assist you in breaking out of the foolish behavioral/psychological scripts you're locked into.

If you don't start with yourself, nothing much will change because you have almost no control over other people, no matter how much you'd like to blame them for your problems. (Of course if those other people are criminals or confidence artists, that changes the equation a bit, but not completely).

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:53 AM

Yeah, it's a racial slur and he's a schmuck

If you're Jewish or you speak even a little bit of Yiddish, you know that "schwarz" or "schwarze" are racial slurs when used the way Jackie Mason uses them. Only a true schmuck would use the expression and then, adopt a tone of injured innocence when confronted with it.

Monday, March 16, 2009 08:53 AM

The irony...

"whining about somebody else's success"

That describes liberals perfectly - yeahOKwhatever

...and the lack of reading comprehension...

And, Mr. Mason obviously overlooks Ms. Winfrey's talent for making ridiculous amounts of money.
