The right responds to Obama's stem cell decision

Two commentators talk eugenics, and congressional Republican leaders come out to oppose the move.

The letters thread is now closed.

If it's OK with Nancy Reagan

It's OK with me. This was approved by a majority before doofus vetoed it to play to the base. What part of demcracy don't those people get.

Would you intentionally kill a newborn baby to save an adult life?

Then why would you intentionally kill an embryo to do so?

Even if it is only a few cells large, what's the difference? The fact that we don't yet possess to technology to allow it to live independent of its mother? We've only had neonatal intensive care units since the 1950's. Before then, premature born babies before a certain time period had no chance of surviving. Were they not considered a human life back then?

Not trying to stir up trouble, just would like rational debate.

Good move, Glenn

Equating stem cell research with the Holocaust is a sure-fire way to alienate the handful of Jews who still watch Faux news.

More conservative nonsense

A couple of points. First, US scientists operate under extremely strict standards both national and internation. Second, no lives are saved. These embryos ARE being destroyed today in countless IVP laboratories either when the parents/donors determine the embryo will not be used or after a period of time when the embryo is no longer viable.

The bill Bush vetoed gave the parents of these embryos the CHOICE to donate their stem cells to science; similar to our established organ donation program. Parents/donors made the choice.

Hundreds of thousands of people could potentially be cured or have their lives enhanced by the use of these cells. We've lost years of clinical research because of Bush's policy. Other countries are now leading the world in ESC research because the US lines are contaminated with mouse cells.

Just another case of standing on a platform built with misinformation and lies.

And taking their point to its logical conclusion ...

Male masturbation to orgasm should be outlawed, after all, it's potential potential human life we're talking about here.

Monday, March 9, 2009 02:00 PM

@ Nathan Coker

But your points are anything but rational....

There is no comparison between a few cells in a dish and a premature baby with a developed brain. Sorry.

Also, most of the embryos used in the research would likely be thrown in the trash... But you guys always forget that fact when having "rational debate". If you had taken the time to read the article instead of knee-jerking to the title - you might have read that.

Duh...

@Nathan Coker

Not trying to stir up trouble, just would like rational debate.

You could start by trying to justify your statement that a clump of cells is the same as a human being.

Glen Beck is an Idiot

Glen Beck is an Idiot and not worth quoting. He cannot complete an argument unless he brings up the Holocaust. He is a nobody in an echo chamber full of nobodys.

@nathan

it's what you & your kind do, stir up trouble for no good reason. stop pretending you don't.

Snowflake children

The right can put a stop to the whole debate by adopting the embryos, implanting them in their uteri, and giving birth to the babies.

Monday, March 9, 2009 02:04 PM

Nathan Coker: why does God kill new born babies

or the equivalent? After all, only a fraction of fertilized embryos implant in a women, and God created the system, so God is a baby killer. If it is good enough for God why isn't it good enough for you, are you saying you are better than God?

Like the stimulus money

Boehner, McConnell and their ilk should take a pledge: that if they or their progeny are ever in a position to benefit from cures, therapies or treatments developed through embryonic stem-cell research, they will not avail themselves of it but partake only of remedies arrived at by other developmental pathways. No matter what.

I'm just waiting

I'm just waiting for the right to get bored with the histrionics and start dealing with reality. All they seem to do is get the vapors every time Obama opens his mouth. Wankers.

Embryos are not legally protected, nor should they be

The concept of a legally recognized human life begins at birth. This is my opinion and I think all other societies previously have recognized this. (Indeed I think many practiced infanticide as a necessity).

I wish Obama had stated that. We don't need embryos and fetuses as protected citizens. Period.

Having said that, everything else that the opposition brings is shot down. Obama needs to grow a pair and tell it like it is.

Monday, March 9, 2009 02:15 PM

@FredRated

Nathan Coker: why does God kill new born babies

Religious folks always have answers to questions like that, and they usually boil down to "We're only human, so we can't possibly understand God".

Then they turn around and tell you that they know exactly what God wants.

Monday, March 9, 2009 02:17 PM

You could start by trying to justify your statement that a clump of cells is the same as a human being.

Yours seemed to be the only non-insulting response.

We can all agree a newborn is not a toddler, who is not a teenager, who is not a full grown adult, who is not a senior citizen.

We can also all agree that these would all qualify as human beings. This is because they are all STAGES of the life of a human being.

Aren't fetuses, embyros, and zygotes all also STAGES of a human being? No one gets to "senior citizen" without first passing through "embryo".

Who here can honestly say they were never a "clump of cells"?

Monday, March 9, 2009 02:17 PM

You're Hitler. No YOU'RE Hitler!

Ah yes, comparing your opponent to Hitler and the Nazis. They made Durbin grovel on the Senate floor for a much less direct comparison. Will Beck be called to account? Unlikely, if only because we expect his deranged outbursts; they are, in fact, all that he is capable of.

Just for fun let's take the repugs argument two steps further.

As someone has already pointed out, male masturbation results in the loss of genetic material that could have resulted in a human baby, so we should outlaw masturbation (Fortunately for you gals you can still masturbate.... for now!)

OK, no more male masturbation, whew! saved those babies from those liberal bishop beaters.

Now how about sexual intercourse that results in a fertilized egg? Only one sperm gets to combine with the egg so all those hundreds of thousands of other sperms that could have resulted in a baby die a slow disappointing death, swimming aimlessly until they expire from exhaustion… poor almost babies… we must save them!

We must now outlaw sexual intercourse as a way to make babies because we are killing thousands of unborn “could-have-been” babies! From now on babies can only be conceived by carefully injecting just one sperm into the egg, not so romantic but at least we saved 100,000 babies so suck it up.

Uh-oh… I just remembered, each month healthy young women will produce two eggs that will just die… alone and in the dark, if we don’t act to stop it. So we must either prevent women from ovulating or make sure that each ovulation results in a pregnancy. I know, forced hysterectomies for all women after their first ovulation which will inject with one sperm to make one baby.

Wippie! Here we have it! The republican utopia! No more potential baby deaths! I cannot wait to live in their great society.

I’m vote’n repug from now on.
