Steele apologizes to Limbaugh

Following what's now become a GOP ritual, the RNC chair says he's sorry for his criticism of the radio talker.

The letters thread is now closed.

So from a Democrat's seat...

At the end of this, either Steele is humiliated or Rush is marginalized.

Yeah, I can live with that. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

The quote that keeps on giving

"If I were chairman of the Republican Party, given the state that it’s in, I would quit. I might get out the hari-kari knife," Limbaugh said.

I re-read this about ten times, and loved it every time.

Short version of Rush's concern for the RNC head:

"I hope he fails!"

As a longtime Democrat...

I'm not used to seeing somebody else performing the circular firing squad trick.

It makes for a wonderful change.

Inspiration!

"If I were chairman of the Republican Party, given the state that it’s in, I would quit. I might get out the hari-kari knife," Limbaugh said.

QUICK QUICK! SOMEONE MAKE RUSH CHAIRMAN OF THE PARTY!

(It's so crazy is just might WORK!)

Beautifully set up by Rahm

Emmanuel knew exactly what he was doing when he called Rush the de facto leader of the GOP. He knew Steele was too insecure to sit idly by. So now with the simple utterance of a few words, he's managed to create the kind of GOP infighting that could finally lead to the death of the party (here's hoping!).

I do believe the tail is wagging the dog

This is what happens when you make a deal with the devil. The GOP loved Rush but now they are all afraid to cross him for fear they will be his next on-air victim.

By golly, Rush IS in charge.

Clean up on aisle 3

FOOD FIGHT!!!!!

Damn... this is REALLY starting to become amusing.

Rush is a 'Bear'

He's just bending Steele over the pool table.

Sympathy for Steele

If you want to make liberals sympathize with somebody, aim Limbaugh's mouth at them. I happened to catch Steele saying that, and I figured this would happen. I can believe Steele is wrong about almost everything and I can even suspect tokenism, but I give Steele this much: he goes into the belly of the beast, by which I mean liberal interview programs (D.L. Hughley in this case, and he's been on Real Time), whereas I can't see Limbaugh going on such a program if he can't bluster through the whole thing.

Actually, I think we should be worried about Steele, because he's one of the few Republicans smart enough to realize they can't be content competing in just selected areas. He may not understand blue states or urban areas, but he does know he needs to. I prefer my Republicans holed up in the exurbs. As an active Democrat, I expect to be on offense in Republican areas for one more election cycle, but after that, maybe not.

Limbaugh slaps Steele

Wow, yet another nail in the Republican party's coffin. Don't their members get tired of all the anger and immaturity? Hmmmm, they probably don't understand that language. Hey neo-cons, try this: Stop being unpatriotic! Stop being un-American! and of course, their old standard, What would Jesus do? The GOP don't understand the concept of leadership. For them, it's all about ruling, and if you don't agree or play by the rules, then it's "step away from the mic", or "get out".

Interesting you should mention hari-kari, Rush

...as it was often the only choice for a samurai who wished to preserve his honor.

Something you should consider. In your case, it may even bestow honor, as you currently have none.

Monday, March 2, 2009 02:55 PM

show some real ballz

I think Steele should challenge Rush to a duel. Let's settle this once and for all.

Monday, March 2, 2009 02:55 PM

Look, Rush, it's Michael Steele!

Let's you and him fight.

Monday, March 2, 2009 02:55 PM

The new 'leader' of the GOP, Rush

Should spend more time on his man-to-boy Central American sex vacations replete with suitcases full of Oxy and penis pills. Take the edge off, Rush.

Indeed - great setup by Rahm

I agree that this was brilliant strategy by Rahm and whomever else is in on it. Limbaugh has always cast himself as the insurgent, the kid shooting spitballs from the back, the biggie-sized poobah passing judgement from his mountain of eternal wisdom. One problem, though - he's never actually done anything. He hasn't made policy, he hasn't had to endure an election. All he does is pontificate from the outside edges.

By shining a spotlight on him, he is being forced into a role of leadership and legitimacy. The result? Flop sweat. He does NOT want to have actual responsibilities and if people start to look at him as if he does, they will also begin to criticize when he doesn't produce anything. His sniping at Steele today is classic. He's desperately trying to get the limelight off himself so he can go back to lobbing bombs.

Steele is such a boob that he will react to all the bait and...ohhhhhh SO entertaining!

Monday, March 2, 2009 03:08 PM

Pass the popcorn and start the pool.

How long till Rush calls Steele a "little black man child" or some other variation on "n***** boy?"

How long till Steele uses the "R" word (and I don't mean "Republican")?

How long till someone points out to Rush that given his current size, a hara kiri knife wouldn't get near the vital areas?

The only kind of duel this bloated loser can manage is the kind in which he stays in his bunker and fires verbal shots at the opposition; he can't function in an open marketplace of ideas, as he has demonstrated with several disastrous appearances on other people's shows. But Steele seems to be getting to him, bunker or no bunker. GOOOOOO Steele!

Monday, March 2, 2009 03:08 PM

Well Mr. Steele ...

... it's time to kiss Limbaugh's butt. The good news it that it's an easy target.

Monday, March 2, 2009 03:20 PM

Stop gloating, you assh*les...

Entertaining, yes. Fun, yes. Counterproductive, completely.

Isn't it the genius of Obama's strategy that he can fight the battle but be above the actual fray? He takes the cheap-shots and then makes the puncher look like a shallow moron?

Step back- If Michael Steele can make a POINT or make a CONTRIBUTION that makes the repubs be more human- then give him some room. We know Rush won't- but sitting on the sidelines like this is a cheap dogfight is beneath us.

That's it. Be frickin adults...

Monday, March 2, 2009 03:23 PM

So, if you're forced to resign, Mr. Steele...

...does that mean you're out of a job or does that mean you're out of work?

Monday, March 2, 2009 03:24 PM

Pedantic, I know...

Harry Caray was the announcer for the Chicago Cubs.

Harakiri (a.k.a. "Seppuku") is ritual suicide.

Sorry, but this is one of my least favorite malapropisms.
