Dobson resigns as chairman of Focus on the Family

The move by the 72-year-old founder of the conservative Christian group is reportedly part of a succession plan.

The letters thread is now closed.

If only he could resign and take the entire organization with him

Dobson is nothing more than a bigot with designs on a theocracy. I lived in the state of Colorado for 26 years, and I saw groups like Focus on the Family turn a state with a live and let live attitude into one full of vehement hatemongers.

It disgusts me to no end that people like Dobson and his ilk have been able to wield political power over the past decades, and yet weasel out of having to pay taxes, or apologize at all for their hateful, damaging rhetoric under the auspices of being a religious organization.

I know that Dobson's retirement does not end the influence or presence of christian fundamentalists in our country. But I am hopeful that we are entering an era where they will finally be recognized by the majority of Americans for the insane extremists that they truly are.

From Rocky Mountain High to Theocracy Central

DQuintana - The nest of rabid authoritarian fundie haters in Colorado sure did wreck it's reputation. I remember growing up when John Denver was popular and the state having such a live and let live image. No more.

As has been said many times (and in many ways)

They should focus on their own damn families and leave everyone else alone.

It's uncommon to see

a conservative Christian leader quit for some other reason besides being gay.

Hopeful sign

Let's hope this is a sign that the RR is finally losing a lot of major influence in politics and our society in general. I wonder if he'll take the plans for the gay death camps with him.

You should be thanking Mr. Dobson...

First of all, please refrain from your bigoted Christianophobic invectives. It is very offensive to those who believe!

Second, ire towards this man in not appropriate. You all should be thanking him for his concern. Let me explain.

Dobson's Christian beliefs are what they are; one of those beliefs is seeing homosexuality as an abomination of God.

But instead of calling for the execution of homosexuals, of which is common practice in Muslim countries, Mr. Dobson has attempted to 'cure' people of their 'affliction.'

In believing that 'unwanted same-sex attraction, has been and can be overcome through understanding developmental models for homosexuality and choosing to heal the complex developmental issues which led to same-sex attraction,' Mr. Dobson is giving of himslef to save other human beings from what he believes could be an eternity in hell.

For these selfless efforts, a simple "thanks but no thanks, Mr. Dobson" would be more apropos. Not the anti-Christian hate speech that is witnessed here.

I don't see anti-Christianity comments here

but rather comments against certain types of Christians. There is a difference. Jesus criticized in very strong and harsh language the hypocrisy of the chief priests and Jewish leaders in his day without being anti-Jewish (though later many Christians would twist his words out of context to support anti-Semitism -- a strange result since Jesus was a devout Jew). These comments here do the same thing - - harshly criticize the "chief priests" of a certain strain of Christianity for their hypocrisy without being anti-Christian. The irony of many in the conservative Evangelical Christian movement is that they seem to have very little understanding of what Jesus actually taught.

Not all criticism of Christians is an attack on Christianity.

Goodbye Good Riddance

I was baptised a christian. As a child I was taught that Jesus loved the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. It was as a young adult that I learned Jesus had many MANY MANY MANY exceptions when it comes to actually dispensing his love.

Lies and hypocracy throughout the ages, that's all it's wrought.

Just another Pharisee

James Dobson is identical to religious/political authorities that crucified Jesus.

What A Mentality

Yes it is good to see this guy go. Can you imagine the evil of this knothead. He thinks that loving parents of children is some thing to achieve; doesn't he know that welfare moms are the in thing? And having honesty and ethics are good ideals to aspire to-we like are cooks, and lying politicians, cooked car dealers, who needs ethics? Or that scrambling baby brains and throwing the leftovers like gutted fish into a trash pail is somehow wrong; wait until he needs an injection of scrambled baby brains, he will change his tune. That working for a living is something one must do to support a family one produces; we have the stimulus package now it can take the place of absent fathers. I wonder if he also thought mowing one's lawn, and picking up the trash around one's house should be done-can you image that? I bet he is even against getting liquored up or drugged up and beating and abusing the family, and also having porn available to children; how does he expect us to develop sexually and increase our 50% teen clap rate? With some form of morality? The very idea! Oh and how about that god deal; with the amazing abilities of modern humans who needs such a higher power? We are doing a very fine job, thanks but no thanks? Yes let us get rid of these organizations, who needs some do-gooder advocating for good healthy loving families in our well running society anyway?

Good Bye Mr. Dobson

I remember shouting "Whoo Hoo!" with a big smile when the Reverend Jerry Falwell was found face-down-dead on the floor next to his desk. "How fitting," I thought -- just like Don Corleone in Godfather III. (I'm not proud of these feelings, as I, too, am a Christian, though Mr. Falwell and Mr. Dobson wouldn't think so.) But, the feelings and thoughts were real so, I'm sure I need forgiveness.

The problem with the Reverends -- they don't believe they need forgiveness because they speak the Word of God. Poor God. Good thing He has big, broad shoulders. With these fools speaking in His Name, it's a wonder He can hold on to any credibility at all.

Those who hate, destroy, whether it is a single person's spirit, an entire country, or a whole globe.

Dobson wonders, "What heaven will be like..."

Doson is getting old, close to death. I heard one of his radio programs years ago, and this was the idiot question he asked. He assumes heaven, and that he will get to heaven, along with his senior staff.

I think he will get there, as the rest of us will get there. But when he gets there, God will open Dobson's understanding, and Dobson will be so embarrassed by his shitty behavior on earth while he was alive, that his soul will hide under the bushes up in heaven for several millenia.

And then, when he finally comes out, he will spend the next several millenia repenting. He will shine other angels' heavenly shoes with his tongue in pennance. He is a confident-voiced devil. Bye-bye, Dobby! Good luck with the Cosmaos!
