Indeed. It was an innocent mistake. The cartoonist and editor had absolutely no idea there'd be a bad reaction to the cartoon. None!
This is the stuff that makes me want to stop being a liberal. The cartoon was not particularly funny, but in the local context of a chimp shooting, it was merely offensive to chimps. Even without knowing about the chimp story, I thought it was a joke about moneys typing Hamlet.
I hate this kind of "apology". It's like when the airline apologizes "if you have been inconvenienced" when they have stranded you in some far-away airport overnight. There is no acknowledgement that they screwed up, only if you somehow find this inconvenient.
Murdoch is 'apologizing' not for running an offensive cartoon, but rather for your being offended. You, know, if you were unreasonable enough to find that cartoon offensive, then he is sorry you are so sensitive.
The emperor has no clothes, and I wish to hell he did.
The Post's first reaction was belligerence. Now, we get this half-assed apology.
I suppose it's better than no apology.
Shows what happens when you push bullies.
Now, if we could only get him to apologize for how he's messed up the WSJ.
The cartoon suggested a monkey wrote a piece of bad legislation, as if he'd gotten time off from his Shakespeare writing gig. It wasn't a very good, nor clear metaphor, but it was obvious, especially since that damn chimp story had been in the news for days and the "infinite monkeys" joke is very old and well-worn.
If the protest had been about poor metaphors...great. If it had been about insensitivity to animals...great. But no. The people who see racism in every damn thing had to throw a parade, with the usual A-list clowns at the front.
And once again the cause has been set back another notch.
I'm curious, does the post have any black editors or managers who approve content? Seems to me a non-white person might have noticed this cartoon before it ran.
Probably not, Obama loves his religious fanatics too much including Rev. "god damn america" Wright and Rev. Rick Warren.
What gay rights were in place that Obama removed?
But it's pretty hard to believe that its obvious implication wasn't painfully evident from day one. The artist and editor(s) would have to be enormously blind and frankly clueless not to see immediately how it would be taken wrong.
One assume that any cartoon published in NYC is carefully vetted for the thousands of possible interest groups that could be offended. Therefor it is hard to believe that someone wouldn't have asked themselves, "Who might be offended by this?"
E.G.; everywhere. Insult the prophet and a building burns. In the US though, with race it's much blurrier. We're not sure what we can say or who can say it. I watched a Katt Williams stand up routine, I think "nigger" makes up about 10% of the man's entire known vocabulary. But it's ok because he is one. You can cartoon Bush as a chimp but not Obama. The safest course of action in America now is for all non-blacks to simply pretend race does not exist and to never address it in any way or comment on it or have an opinion about it at all.
Rupert is typical of the mindset of the fascist ruling class that is dominated by lawyers and judges. Only after they are caught red-handed do they pretend to be sorry for their "mistakes" as if they were a bunch of three year olds. Bank robbers are sorry too but, they still go to jail. Only when the public stops giving the bosses a free pass because they are well-dressed and cry crocodile tears (when the press they own can't cover up their acts) will any of us have a chance to enforce contracts and universal law. Call for term-limits on all politicians, remove money from politics by public financing and make the robber-barons [some of whom were born in Australia and live in China] pay taxes like it's 1984. Instead of them having cameras at every red light in America, put cameras in every court-room and taps on every judges {public servant's} phone. Then we'll see who is really calling the shots.
FYI, Rev. Wright's (well ex-Church since he isn't the pastor any longer) is and was gay friendly. If you check out their website, they actually have singles fellowship for "same gendered loving" folks. Not all "black" churches are virulently homophobic, despite what you may think.

I hate half-arsed apologies as much as you, but this isn't one. He didn't say he wanted to apologize *if* anyone was offended, (which would imply that he was only sorry for the way others interpreted it) he said he wanted to apologize *to* everyone who was offended. He acknowledges that many people were offended and acknowledged the hurt that it caused.
Let the Post put up a cartoon of John Ratzenberger wearing his recently acquired pointy hat over an SS uniform and then we can sit back and see how a politically dominant societal group reacts.
What color is a Chimpanzee's skin anyway, morons?
Racism isn't such a big problem when you are faced with the challenge of even greater stupidity.
Funny what is an important controversy and what is status quo for the MSM.
More people care about the damn chimp cartoon than care about the legislation or for that matter any other real issue.
"This is the stuff that makes me want to stop being a liberal"
Oh please dartvader, you can't "stop" being what you never were. Liberals don't agonize over Mike Huckabee's failure as the GOP presidential candidate or rag on multiculturalism because American culture is "superior"
The Murdock apology is just a redundant non-apology apology. Until he and the Post acknowledge that the cartoon was blatant racist attack on Obama, and not a misinterpretation, no apology will be accepted. And everyone can drop the "thousand monkeys typing" nonsense. Sean Delonas' claim that it referred to Nancy Pelosi is an admission that it targeted an individual (Obama, not Pelosi) and there was no thousand monkey analogy.
