On his big night, Jindal falls flat

The Louisiana governor was tapped to give the GOP response to Obama because he's a rising star in his party, but that wasn't enough.

The letters thread is now closed.

Flat indeed

Jindal's speech sounded like Andy Griffith explaining the Republican platform to Opie. Hurricane Katrina is a poor argument for less government involvement!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:17 PM

Not bad?

I was just stunned. It was self-serving, disingenuous, and utterly devoid of ideas.

No, I probably shouldn't be stunned. But now I have a new stealth-right-wing wacko Republican darling to detest and hope he crashes and burns. Which he will.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:21 PM

And...

Not to mention that the substance was extremely unconvincing. He talked a lot about race, while running a state that has been in the news recently for having race issues. He talked about watching volcanos when his state didn't watch the levees and he talks about free markets when he goes on the air in LA telling Louisianans to 'shop local'

If anything, I've lost respect for Rhodes scholarship... someone gave this man a Rhodes Scholarship!?

Tough act to follow

He had to follow the ultra charismatic Obama, and he is no Obama.

The message was also awful. People are looking for leadership, not messages of "we trust you to clean up the mess we made".

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:21 PM

I hope these GOP govs spend more time governing their states

2012 is way off in future. Right now your state needs you to govern Jindal, not run for President.

Flag

And don't forget that hilarious pelican flag in the background. Momma feeding her babies blood while he decries government spending.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:24 PM

"This was not a good start to Jindal 2012."

No?

I couldn't disagree more.

Palin / Jindal '12!

YEAH!

With just a bit of luck, we'd be seeing the "Don't blame me, I'm from Utah" bumper stickers by the Valentine's Day of '13.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:25 PM

oh, yeah...

and is it just me, or is the Republican practice of praising Obama for being black starting to get really, really old?

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:29 PM

oh Bobby, do you have a backup skill maybe ?

Talk about not being ready for primetime! Gov. Jindal showed us how unprepared for the assigned role of Savior for the Republicans he really is. There must be about 50,000 Young Republicans in the country who could give him some speech coaching.

Bereft of any ideas whatever, the GOP is desperately clutching at any straw around; this one may be the fabled last one.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:29 PM

He came across like an over-eager school counselor

and I don't know whose idea it was to have him traipse out of the back shadows of that hallway. His approach was tentative and his delivery was halting and had the tone of some speaking to children. Admittedly it would've been downright difficult to compete with the President in presentation let alone craft a message that stood in opposition that sounded in anyway like it wasn't simply rehashing tired old Republican ideas. He didn't succeed. The thing they have yet to admit to themselves is that Obama has hit on something novel; he speaks like he has something to say and he believes in what he says. real content. what a concept.

Intercourse is nasty

That was no pelican. It was a stork-- which is where Republicans claim babies come.

Bobby and the base believe public schools should teach the stork theory instead of the intercourse hypothesis in public schools.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:38 PM

oh come on.

you're talking about a politican whose party idolizes george bush, sarah palin, and joe the plumber. as long as he doesn't start ululating, the base will acclaim his brilliant riposte.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:38 PM

Jindal shouldn't quit his day job

On the other hand, it looks Jack McBrayer might be getting a promotion.

Did Jindal really say "feed our enemies"?

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:39 PM

The face of the "new" GOP?

Wow. Unless the guy was auditioning for the "new" Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, he didn't do anything to advance his chances of being the "new" face of the GOP, let alone winning in 2012.

Or perhaps it was Doug Henning he was channeling. I expected to see a rainbow magically appear behind him each time he said with aw-shucks and wide-eyed wonder, "you can do anything".

What is going wrong with the GOP these day?

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:43 PM

nobody can sound intelligent regurgitating idiotic republican lies when there is someone with a BIG megaphone talking sense

we haven't had that for a long time.

Jindal flat:Olbermann predictably hateful

As a conservative, I would have to agree Jindal was flat; I expected more. He's young and he will polish his message.

But I am never disappointed by the sheer malevolence of Keith Olbermann. I'm watching him to get his take on the speech and as Jindal is about to give his response you hear Olbermann mutter off camera, "Oh God!"

Seriously, this is why Fox News beats the crap out of networks like this one. As a comparison, Bill O'Reilly would never, ever make a disparaging comment like that if it were Harry Reid or some other Democrat preparing for a similar response.

It just proves what I believe: that whenever a liberal is leveling a charge against someone, the liberal is usually guilty of that offense.

Keith Olbermann thinks Bill O'Reilly is unreasonable, but Keith Olbermann actually is the worst person...EVER!

On the radio- Is this a cartoon?

I heard it on the radio, and I kept wondering, are these guys serious? This guy sounded like a cartoon character, or I was wondering if he was one of these new-fanegeled CG characters? I have since seen the speech on TV, and it is even worse with video.

Shucks, I guess the GOP is now down to Sara and Huck, 2 21 st century creationists, and Sanford and Pawlenty, 21st century Neo- Hooverites whenit comes to government trying to help its people.

P.S. Jindhl is NOT your Obama !

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:51 PM

Should've been reading "The Pet Goat"

Between flogging the phrase "stren'then the economy" and the flat-out abuse of "we believe Americans can do ANYTHING," Jindal seems to have the verve of a game of checkers at the parish hall. Was there any content to that rebuttal?

I don't have anything constructive to offer, admittedly. I listened to Jindal on the car radio, and found his cloying delivery only slightly better than the crummy message he was so sincerely attempting to convey.

I do hope, however, that this guy does in fact represent the best and brightest the G.O.P. has to offer.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 08:58 PM

I laughed

When Jindal started speaking, I thought, OMG, he sounds like someone doing a bad impression of an SNL comedian's impression of Al Gore.

I had never heard Jindal speak, but I never expected this.

The speech itself was the same-old same-old, so the delivery should have been more commanding to compensate.

By the way, why does he call himself Bobby, when his name is Piyush? And what's his middle name?

Many conservatives were so obsessed with Obama's name, you'd think they'd be wondering what Jindal has to hide.
