Why not Obama?
Al's fifteen minutes of racist rants has long expired. I'm surprised he hasn't called the night sky racist because of its color. Grow up, Salon; stop salivating at the stupidity of this assertion.
that there is any rationale for this cartoon?
I guess when one imagines oneself a media critic, one always identifies with those he admires much, and looks for ways to excuse the inexcusable.
Another cartoonistcomparing the President with a chimp:

Different President, different chimp, but still... Damn racist cartoonists.
The cartoon may or may not be in poor taste -- personally I find it unenlightening and not much of a "joke" -- but the mealy-mouthed description of "some see a nasty undertone in the political cartoon" doesn't sound too far off a description of the reaction to the Danish "Mohammed" cartoons.
So if any of y'all are preparing to get all lathered up about Delonas and the NY Post, just stop to think first if you might not be a bit hypocritical. If not, fire away then.
But it's like a constellation in this sky -- there's always a connection where you wish to see one, even if it only exists in the mind.
We know you mean well. You can't help it that you're a racist idiot. Monkeys = Black people, who knew? Not like that stereotype hasn't been around for the last 300 years or so. So, also, how original of you to come up with that image. How artistic. Your mother must be so proud of you. I'm sure she speaks of you highly while she's cutting the eye holes out of your white sheets. I'm sure we will all regard you with a certain mien in the next few months. Of course had you tried some stupid stunt like that a couple years ago, like trying to liken 'Incurious George' to a monkey, you would have been branded a traitor and terrorist-loving dupe, and who knows, renditioned? But we're above that now. We don't brand assholes like you terrorists. You're just another asshole. You just can't help it. Deal with that.
1000 monkeys, huh? Riiiiight. Your average NYPost reader is sure to make THAT connection right away. It's a pretty convoluted reference. "The stimulus bill is so long it's like Shakespeare, get it? And, uh, the guy shot the monkey who typed it up!" WEAK. Even if Obama had nothing to do with the stimulus bill it'd still be a stupid cartoon.
I'm outraged, but I can't pretend I'm shocked. We all knew there'd be some subtle mainstream racism with our first black President. Just be prepared for four to eight more years of shit like this...
is such a bother....
it is so confusing when you need a talking point blast fax to find out it isn't socially acceptable to be a racist any more.
Boo Hoo, losers.
If racism, lies and discredited economic fantasies are all you got, you are fresh out of luck.
You lost. You are are appalling. And you really need to learn to take responsibility for your failures...
instead of being a constant reminder of what idiots you are.
Go away. Maybe Paraguay will take you.
the poor old chimpanzee that was shot. Poor old guy was not in his right mind when he attacked his victim. Maybe he had to be put down, but can you imagine his fear and panic? Then a cop shoots him and kills him.
Of course I feel terrible for the victim. But that poor animal deserves a modicum of sympathy too.
As for the rest of the cartoon, you expect anything else from the NY Post? I mean, c'mon.
Come on, its WHITE people like yourself that keep the problem alive! Let it go!
And everybody knows Pelosi and Reid and a bunch of monkeys wrote the stimulus bill, NOT Obama.
One cartoonist compares Bush to a chimp to make a statement about Bush being simple minded.
Another cartoonist compared Obama to a chimp because Obama is black.
Yeah, you're right. No need for outrage: we're being hypocritical here.
It would have been easy to draw a chimp that resembled the President... protruding ears, shirt sleeves... So I don't think the cartoonist meant that comparison, though it may live in his psyche.
I think the error in this cartoon is the mistake of insularity. The author heard so much about the chimp in his environs it was easy to assume that everyone had heard about it -- therefore the parallels would be obvious.
I think the relevant line from the chimp reporting is one not included in the blurb. It comes from the 911 call where the owner is asking the police to "Shoot him! Shoot him! He's tearing apart my friend!" Certainly for a part of this country the stimulus package feels like tearing apart the hard work of the last 30 years and doing "life altering injury".
I don't agree with the viewpoint, but I'm hesitant to call "racist!" against someone who seems to.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there's been one particular ex-resident of 1600 Pensylvania Ave. that has been consistantly compared to a chimp for about the last 8 years...and, as much as I'm ashamed for my own race to have to say it, he's white.
I don't agree with the message of this cartoon, but it may be time to stop looking for racism under every rock and shrub before we become cartoons ourselves. Like McCarthy looking for the nonexistant commies in the State Department.
After just having published an article related to our need for false outrage, you publish this piece of crap?
How many editors did this go through?
Come on, its WHITE people like yourself that keep the problem alive! Let it go!
Wow.
Let me see if I'm getting this right: the problem of racism still exists because white people keep seeing it where it doesn't exist?
Wow.
On another note: Everyone knows Pelosi and Reid wrote the stimulus bill? Then why does the New York Post call it Obama's stimulus bill?
