Since its been shown the Repubs are only interested in obstructing this, Dems should throw out all Repub proposals and make the bill the Dems want. Repubs will threaten to filibuster. CALL THEIR BLUFF
Think about how Repubs think and speak. Forcing Repubs to blather on for hours, publicly is sure to be a career ender for someone. Give them the rope.
It must be a good bill if everybody is pissed about it. It will be interesting to see who wins the race to claim credit for it.
These people need to get over themselves and put their egos aside and start focusing on their Constituents. I really could care less how Nancy Pelosi feels. When she starts talking about the public good and framing her discussion of legislation in terms of how to help the country, instead of how to help herself and her political cronies, I might take an interest.
Otherwise, just go to work and do your jobs and quit all the political posturing. President Obama is setting a good example of maturity; I hope Congress wakes up and follows it. The Republicans' rhetoric was disgusting during this debate. The Democrats' only slightly less so.
Give a tiny, rural conservative state the same amount of Senators as a large liberal state, and you have a recipe for ... constant regression.
A re-write of the constitution should make the Senate a democratic body, or based on something other than states.
Ezra Taft Benson,Ike's Secretary of Agriculture, got insight from Khrushchev when he stayed at his house during his visit the US. He told him that his grandchildren would be living under communism. Benson told Krushchev that he hoped instead that all the Russian grandchildren and every other grandchild around the world would instead be living under freedom, and that they would fight communism. Krushchev laughed and said there would be no fight, that there would be a slow incremental increase in socialism and before anyone in America knew it, they'd have communism.
The rush to commit ourselves to this debt and the con job going on at this very moment ,even between Democrats,to push this bill through without a good examination of the road it takes us down is a legitamite concern.Obama won the election but so did the Republicans who now hold office and thier constituants deserve thier right to be heard as well. The argument that it was how the Republicans ruled when they held majority is legit, but so is the argument that 2 wrongs don't make a right and never have. This was the change americans voted for,to put ideological differinces aside and work together.
One segment not hit by this recession is assault arms manufacturers.I moved from New Hampshire 5 years ago and friends I have that work at Thompson Center Arms in Newmarket can't get time off. They have worked overtime for months making assualt weapons and business has just never been better. There is a waiting list for mini 14 style that can easily be turned fully automatic.Who is buying all these weapons?Radical Neocons?,or perhaps the the many illegal immigrants pouring over the border from Mexico each day.We catch over 2 dozen illegals coming across from Mexico each month that are Arabs from terrorist regions, those are just what we catch. Why would all these Yemen nationals want to sneek into the US?Still we can't close and secure borders . A Mexican civil war raging there killing over 6000 a year, more than Iraq, and the collapse of Mexico a possible reality and we are told little to nothing about it for political reasons. That we are told so little to nothing about the number 2 threat to our security, behind Iran according to the US government, should be alarming but it doesn't rank high enough to possibly disrupt the PC agenda.
Every Viet Nam vet knows now that the main supply routes of the First Cavalry Division and the Viet Cong intersected and we never knew it.The Viet Cong sent 5 divisions(15,000 men per division) into the south in small groups of 2 to 3 men until Saigon was totally surrounded and there was nothing that could be done.Still conservatives are dismissed for being concerned for trying to be sure we see the big picture now.
My father taught me that any job worth rushing was worth, just as much if not more important, to insure it was being done right the first time.We cannot afford to waste resources, especially those we must borrow, even as much as many projects in it would be worthy. The push of the radical left congressmen being upset with Pelosi doesn't surprise me.Few on the left can think for themselves or do anything more than speak the mantra and talking points. The left masses give you the pass just for having a "D"next to a title. This is not the time for that.Whatever happened to Question Authority? This should be regarless of what party holds power. The fumbling of the Democrats all over this would be funny if not for the big picture of what we are missing, how stupid and eager we are to repeat passed mistakes and the media failure to live up to it's responsibility to the people by not looking past the slobbering love affair with anything Obama.
And I don't mean about how the Congress was dragging their heels, playing politics-as-usual, or even haggling over legislative details. It was the bitching about all of them?
You get but maybe one or two crisis, real situations, that provide the catalyst for positive change in our country for another generation or two. We've had 2 crises now in the last 8 years - 9/11 and now this economic mess. Well, we saw what happened with 9/11 and how that crisis was squandered so a juvenile, inexperienced, hot dog President could go play war in another country with no good reason. And now here we are with the economic crisis. And Obama plays perpetual campaigner while Congress plays "politics-as-usual."
How absolutely disappointing this economic stimulus plan is. It only needed a few components to make sense to the American people:
1. Change back the bankruptcy laws so Americans can discharge their debt and within a few years become stable investors in the economy again. The recent bankruptcy law changes now guarantee citizens to be indentured slaves to the credit card companies and out-of-control health care industry. CHANGE IT BACK!
2. Reset the clock on all outstanding student loans. Give younger adults, particularly those in default, a chance to begin making payments that make sense, clear out the often large accummulating interest penalities, and clear up their credit reports. They are the consumers of the future. We need them on the road to solvency - not indentured servitude.
3. Immediately turn all HUD foreclosed housing stock over the local municipalities (cities not counties) and allow them to determine the best way to deal with abandoned, boarded up properties; i.e., are they able to be rehabilitated to maintain the integrity of the neighborhood or should they be demolished to make room for new housing stock (often a problem for many urban areas). Funds allocated to private contractors to keep mowing these abandoned properties' lawns, board up windows, etc. should be allocated to the municipalties.
4. Tell all automanufacturers that the United States is phasing out all gasoline passenger vehicles within 7 years and reducing our dependence on foreigh oil by 40%.
Tell GM, Ford, and Chrysler that all government loans are now tired directly to their ability to bring an alternate-fuel vehicle to the market place in 7 years that doesn't use one drop of gasoline, has all the bugs worked out of it, and is affordable (and no, $30,000 for a car is not considered affordable). Make it clear that the government is investing in the infrastructure these new vehicles will require through tax breaks, direct loans, etc. And if GM, Ford, or Chrysler fails to deliver the product we will find car manufacturers that will.
5. Make Immigration Reform is a top priority, new laws will be enacted, and the United States considers it absolutely essential to a sound and sane ecnomic policy, national security policy, and immigration policy.
Immediately pass a law that does not automatically grant U.S. Citizenship to anyone in this country illegally...period. Individuals here illegally who have had children must return to their countries or risk facing deporatation. Their children cannot remain behind as wards of the state. We are not going to tear apart families. We will not honor citizenship to individuals who are here illegally.
Figure out how to secure the borders with or without fences. Determine what a sane employment policy is and force companies to comply with the laws instead of whining about how it costs them money to do background checks.
Immediately deport illegal aliens regardless of the cost and stop "warehousing" them in our prisons and other institutions.
The path to citizenship can be streamlined, but we have to make it clear that assimilation is more than simply 8 people renting a 2 bedroom apartment. There is an expectation of shared values in this country; i.e., learning the language, participating in civic-minded events like voting (sorry, the annual Latino/Somalian/Italian/German/Arabian Fesitval doesn't count!), paying taxes, upholding the laws, and making sure your children get an education, don't create or join gangs, and stay out of trouble.
6. Do not bail out any more banks without clear, concise (not spirit-of-the-law violations down the road), conditions for getting those funds back to the Treasury as soon as possible.
Someone once said, "if it's going to hurt, then make it hurt for all the right reasons." That's how this crisis should be handled and regarded.
Obama and the Congressional Dems can either play this like a "golden oldie" or they can suck it up and go after the real change that this country needs - not the teleprompter rhetoric we've been getting from Obama for two years now.
