Obama on Daschle: "Mistake" doesn't diminish contributions

In a statement, President Obama says he accepted Tom Daschle's decision to withdraw his nomination "with sadness and regret."

Damn! My partner read Daschle's book for nothing

except for his valuable insights into the Healthcare Industrial Complex and keen solutions to the country's healthcare problems.

beyond the scandal

I can not believe this is a problem only for Democratic appointees.

Does anyone else think that perhaps the tax code is too complicated, too full of loopholes, too difficult to navigate, in its current condition?

Perhaps President Obama should start a task force on how to simplify, and tighten up, the tax code.

"Former Tom Daschle"?

Couldn't resist.

One more for the Republicans

It is dismaying that the Republicans continue to sabotage every effort Obama is making. Daschle's giving up will send them into convulsions of laughter and joy. All they have to do is say "Boo" and the Democrats fall to the ground in terror and run for cover. I am so weary of this. When will the Democrats fight? When will they stop this nonsense? When will they kick some ass? When will they refuse to bow down to a bunch of lousy hypocrites who only know how to steal, cheat, connive, and destroy? When will they own their power? When?

lack of punishment notwithstanding

"mistake" doesn't diminish contributions

OK, let's move along here...time to get on with our own life which includes cowering from the IRS, whenever they want to instigate an issue, unlike the 'privileged'.

This has nothing to do with the Republicans.

It is dismaying that the Republicans continue to sabotage every effort Obama is making. -- tmoody2525

Daschle was dishonest (or stupid at best) and the Obama transition team's vaunted questionnaire seems to have left a lot unanswered for. If we find out that they thought that this could just slide, that's even worse.

This is now the third Obama appointee, two involved in finance, who cheated on their taxes. Throw in Richardson's pay to play scandal and the equivocating on torture, and it's getting somewhat difficult to explain just how the Dems are different from the Rethugs.

Let them eat cake

These are not mistakes.....these are willful decisions. Tom Daschle believed he didn't have to pay taxes. Even if he didn't know it himself about the car ( he should have...I do ), he pays people to do his taxes....and they knew. This is a good thing. Obama needs to get rid of embarassing career politicians, I only wished he had stepped in and taken care of it himself, before the media did it.

I wonder...

how much healthcare daschle's tax breaks would buy? I'm betting quite a bit.

He cares about healthcare so long as it lines his pockets.

Considering the people MOTUS hung around with before becoming President we shouldn't be surprised daschle would be someone he respects.

Obama Single Handedly

Cleaning up tax cheats in Washington. The government coffers will be overflowing soon from payment of back taxes and the economy will roll on. Well done sir!

Okay

Get someone else.

Simpler Tax Code

Anyone notice the Brits are saying that having more than 2 kids is bad for the environment? How does that square with the U.S. tax code which hands out tax credits for every dependent child you have? They also allow churches to operate tax free while church leaders make political endorsements and drive around in BMWs.

OK

Audit every member of Congress now, please.

And whiz-quizzes all around, too.

I'm sick to death of paying their salaries for this kind of performance.

Drug-using drunk-driving tax-cheating gay-cruising hypocrites, the whole lot of them.

If nothing gets done because Congress is in obstructionist mode, let's AT LEAST make sure we purge the criminals from the floor.

Michael Steele wants to eliminate capital gains tax. If someone doesn't start governing pretty soon, we might have to start shooting Republicans.

How about?

How about C. Everett Koop for the position?

Gotcha gets ya every time

We live in a disturbing, negative Gotcha! environment -- I think it is wrong that Tom Daschle failed to pay income tax on something that is taxable, but when he found out, he made it right. As a person who is a very small operator of a very small business trying to figure out federal and state tax codes so I can do things right, I am not exactly astonished that someone new to private life after 30 years of public service could have been clueless in the face of tax complexity. If his accountant didn't know he had a driver and car provided as a "gift," it wouldn't have crossed his mind to ask about it. So I can see where these things can happen. The tax code is a mess. That is the ONLY thing I ever agreed with John McCain about. We need a simplified tax code, JUST AS MUCH AS WE NEED A SIMPLIFIED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.

I have a friend in construction who did some work for me on my house in exchange for some paperwork I did for him. Do we both have to declare this on our income taxes? I thought it was just friends helping friends -- but now I'm wondering. I WILL ask my accountant, but that was two years ago, so I'm a tax cheat if I got that wrong ... Not because I had any intention of being a tax cheat but because I thought it was OK at the time so I didn't declare it. I have a business acquaintance who paid for a plane ticket for me to join her and a group of friends for a weekend because she could and I didn't have the money at the time. Was that income? I thought it was a Christmas gift. Now I'm worried that, if I bring these things up this year with my accountant and I DO owe back taxes and have to file an amended return, my business will go to hell because the local paper will find out about it I'll be smeared, since I am known in my small community.

Just like the big-time media were all OVER Daschle -- GOTCHA!!!! -- and perfectly willing to throw away a man's whole career to castigate him and humiliate him. I don't know why anyone would even want to put his/her name forward for public office any more because if you've ever done ONE thing wrong, even if you didn't realize it at the time, they'll GETCHA!
