Did taxes fell another Obama appointee?

Nancy Killefer, the president's nominee to be chief performance officer, has withdrawn; so far, the administration isn't saying why.

The letters thread is now closed.

Maybe it would be easier to report on the politicians who did pay their taxes instead

of the ones who didn't?

It would save us all some time.

It suddenly dawned on me ...

Holder, Daschle, Killefer, Franken - all didn't pay their fair share of taxes. They are aping the corporations and wealthy individuals they socialize with, where paying taxes is verboten, and creating a tax haven is the height of sophistication.

Even for the rich Democrats, the secret is, only rubes pay full taxes.

Every other so-called 'regulatory' agency in the country has been captured by the business they are supposed to regulate, and the IRS is no exception. It has been captured by corporate America and the wealthy, and purposedly cannot 'keep up' with tax dodges.

Gender question

...it may well be that the administration decided there were only so many hits they could take on the subject.

Yes, Alex... or perhaps, since the taxes at stake were related to domestic help - the same as the "lesser" tax issue for Tim Geithner - we are finding again that sometimes an extra "X" chromosome makes all the difference.

Didn't you know the rich don't pay taxes

Maybe our former President was right on at least one thing. The rich don't pay taxes.

Not HOlder, Geithner ...

Sorry, Holder let a tax cheat go, but wasn't one himself. Geithner! Goldman Sachs, Summers protege, orchestrated the first bailout... now, he's going to 'help' in the second. Excellent choice! Hank Paulson II.

Are ALL politicians MILLIONAIRES?

She's in trouble because she didn't pay the employment tax for her HOUSEHOLD HELP. Politicians are supposed to be representative of the people, but how many people have HOUSEHOLD HELP?

Why is EVERY major politician a millionaire? Does anyone else see a major problem with this?

For all you who want to limit wealth, why not start with politicians? How about a law that restricts any House rep, Senator, or Governor (or ANY politician for that matter) to $150,000 a year of TOTAL INCOME? It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be a start.

This is a culture issue, not an Obama issue

And when I say culture, I mean the "elite" culture - whether in Washington, Wall Street, or corporate headquarters.

I am sorry that President Obama's first weeks in office are marred by this kind of controversy, but it's a side effect of raising the ethical bar. If these mini-scandals help make it clear to Washington insiders - of both parties - that tax laws really do apply to everyone, the IRS should be ready for a flurry of quiet, under-the-radar tax return amendments. And if this adds momentum to the push for overhauling our convoluted tax code, that's a pretty good benefit.

As for the budding meme that this is another example of gender discrimination (Geithner, male, confirmed; Daschle, male, confirmed; Killefer, female, withdrawn), look to politics, not XX chromosomes - "chief performance officer" is a new position, the creation of which will be fought, on Capitol Hill, in the OMB bureaucracy, and in agencies concerned about being able to justify their programs. Obama's administration is likely to be more dedicated to getting the position created, therefore unwilling to have a nominee muddy that process through a confirmation battle.

Obama is responsible for Obama's nominees warts and all

although I know Obama taking responsiblity for his own actions is not exactly his strong suit.

If our leaders can't figure out the tax code

Maybe it is time to simplify it.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 08:46 AM

or get smarter leaders

sorry couldn't resist

re: sonofloud

How about both!

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 08:52 AM

Sheesh

Apparently I'm a chump for paying my taxes.

And I don't think this is a gender issue. "Chief Performance Officer" is going to hold other peoples' feet to the fire but can't manage her own taxes? That is too much even for Washington.

Solution for enforcement of tax laws:

Get everyone in the country nominated for a cabinet position.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 08:52 AM

Tom Daschle

Please! Somebody with influence! Tell Tom Daschle to withdraw like a gentleman. Making excuses for taking all that money to give "strategic advice," failing to pay taxes on a "gift," and being married to a lobbyist should all disqualify him from service in the Obama administration.

Blagojevich PAID his taxes.

Just what kind of politician is he?

CRUCIFY HIM!

CRUCIFY HIM!

CRUCIFY HIM!

Wasn't she up for that Senate seat?

Helluva vetting process

Who are these clowns? If they spent a faction of the time they spent browbeating the Clintons, maybe they could get something right.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 09:13 AM

I guess audits, and taxes, are for the little people...

Somehow, I have a feeling would not be waiting for me to be appointed a position in D.C. before they, forcefully, reminded me of that sort of outstanding amount- $128,000 over three years...

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 09:23 AM

@ELYDOG Franken did pay

Franken's accountant paid his state income taxes to the states where he lived instead of each individual state where he earned income. Since Franken lived in New York and Minnesota, higher tax states, he actually overpaid.

Please let the Republicans do their own spinning.

Signed sealed delivered ~For the times.... they are a changin

After an almost two year campaign theme about hope, transparency and change... (and the promise to put an end to back room deals in Washington), might President Barack Obama be in the process of cleaning house?

Our President doesn't seem like just your average, regular politician. --At least that's what he ran his entire campaign on.

Maybe his first one hundred day plan is to to pave the path that will allow him to make good on his promises of transparency and change in Washington.

~ Nominate some of the politicians that he is indebted to (The 'some' who are part of the club that helped him to become the highest official in the land).

~ He can repay his 'debt' to those 'some' by nominating them;

knowing that the media will sniff them out. Those nominated "Washington politics as usual" politicians who don't jive with President Obama's promises of ethics and good judgement (such as Bill Richardson)will:

~have to withdraw their own nominations,

~not be accepted by the Senate,

~or have to start living above board.

~The old back room deal-making, will have to cease or they'll be exposed (one by one).

And, while they are all so busy passing bills of "bail-out" with our tax money, they'll have to start paying their own taxes (and with fines).

One by one......

I think that MIGHT be part of his clean up Washington plan.

Welllllll, at least I hope it is.

Perhaps I'm just too hopeful, desperate and optimistic (and suspicious), but I find the timing of the Governor of Illinois shtick a bit coincidental; JUST after the Presidential Election. (?)

Let's see how how much of a 'singer' Mr. Rod Blagojevich is.

Maybe it's simply coincidence.

Then again, as sung by Chicago, maybe it's

"...Only the beginning, only just a start".
