GOP targets Reid in new ad

The 2010 election has officially begun, with Republicans using their first TV spot to criticize Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The letters thread is now closed.

I just thought it would be peacetime a bit longer

Not these republicans. Spinning themselves into oblivion.

Obama should take note: They don't want peace. They want to win. Slap em around a bit more until they get the message: We won. Deal with it.

I'd rather have a Majority Leader who is proud to be called a Liberal

Of course, I thought Rep Pelosi would be a good Democratic leader in the House too. Oh well.

Still, I'd really like to have a Senate Majority Leader be from a solidly "blue" state.

No, not Harry Reid!

You'd think the republicans would be nicer to their most stalwart ally in the senate.

And I'm with them...

The perpetually spineless Harry Reid is a disaster for Democrats and needs to be replaced as quickly as possible. Weak-kneed and feckless, he has been the poster child of what's gone wrong with our party.

YESSSSSSSS!!!!

What a pair of losers to draw to.

Where do I contribute?

Why in the world would the GOP want to get rid of this guy? He bends over and grabs his ankles (apparently one of Rushbo's favorite fantasies) on every issue of substance. He's as far from a "leader" as you could possibly get, and if the Republican campaign helps rid us of this mope, I daresay I'd owe them a debt of gratitude.

The Counterattack is Already Underway Out There

Over the weekend I engaged in an anthropology expedition by going to one of the periodic "Gun and Knife Show" Weaponspalooza at the county fairgrounds.

In addition to the people hawking new guns, classic guns and gun supplies, there were also rack after rack of stickers with such slogans as "Obama Would Make a Good Speed Bump" (a reference to him being black and comparing him to asphalt?). Or a sticker that read that in America, you can join the military, serve "and come home and be treated like shit by liberals!" (never mind that Bush & Co. treated the broken soldiers of Walter Reed Army Hospital like discarded toys). Or T-shirts hailing Sarah Palin and saying this it is impossible for liberals to be patriots. Or that "10 out of 10 Terrorists Prefer Democrats."

Yep, they're out there. They didn't go away. And in 2010 they will be summoned by Republicans who will tempt them into the open by denouncing The War on Christmas and introduce bills to outlaw burning the American flag (unless, of course, you're a Cuban in Miami protesting the return of Elian Gonzalez to his father). Remember what happened in 1994 when the Republicans hollered "God, Guns and Gays," and voted in people who would thoroughly screw them over in their working-class finances.

Why are you all acting surprised by this?

Conservatives have no conscience. Period. They're not going to accept that they lost until we take everything away from them.

Maybe now Harry Reid will learn to stop blocking punches with his face.

They say Harry Reid used to box, but if his performance in Congress is any indication, then as a boxer he probably kept his hands down and blocked punches with his face. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he ran away from his opponents, cowered in his corner, and repeatedly punched himself in his own face. Wouldn't want to make the other guy mad by actually fighting back.

Otherwise, this is a case where for a change, I hope the GOP succeeds.

YHGTBFKM

Republicans. Attacking for excessive and wasteful spending. What's next, Limbaugh complaining Reid is too fat? Coulter attacking him for making obnoxious and puerile comments?

Why won't this political party just fucking die already? At the point where a group of people cease to be anything more than a parody of themselves, they should just throw in the towel.

Let's get smart

Let's get smart, Dems.

We're disappointed in Harry Reid. We need to replace him with someone strong, articulate, cool, smart and secure. Someone who would reflect the change we're looking for. There must be someone like that left in the Senate ... I kind of hoped Hillary would wind up Majority leader, but she now has a much more important job. So let's look at our leadership and find someone to replace Reid who is not a constant, pathetic embarrassment to the Democratic party.

Reid does not belong in the Obama change equation.

They are doing what they're supposed to do

whatever it takes to get elected. Salon liberals prefer to complain and blog about it.

Democratic Majority Leaders before Lyndon Johnson...

were regularly voted out of office. They were considered weak and vacillating. They tried to placate the right wing and had little or no real power. Just as they are doing today. Lyndon changed all of that.

Before, majority leaders could not reward or punish their wandering troops. Party seniority was sacred. If a senator had been there for years and wanted to be on a committee, that was it, he (and they were all he’s) was on that committee. The leader could not reward either, he didn’t hold any purse strings.

When Lyndon took over the senate he changed everything. He did away with the seniority system. He punished by ruthlessly assigning people who he felt were loyal to him to plum spots and dropping those who were not - especially long term senators. He made an example of them with an absolute ruthlessness.

His next step as an effective Majority Leader was to reward. Coming from Texas and with his friends at Brown and Root (the ancestors of Halliburton) clamoring to give under-the-table money to their friends (with all the obvious quid pro quo's, of course), he and his minions began flying into Washington with suitcases of hard cash. He used that to back loyal supporters, or in primaries to back potential loyal supporters, at the expense of those who were not on board and beholden to him. Cross him and you got not a cent from him. He created a discipline and backbone in an astonishingly short time.

It is too bad that the Repulicans have learned and are using his methods today and the Democrats have completely forgotten everything about history.

We have seen the Republicans demonize and then demolish the docile Daschle and now they are at the throat of the recumbent Reid.

I could not be more happy to see Reid and Pelosi out of their leadership roles until a real leader can take over in both the House and the Senate.

Would that the new leader would have a higher morality than Johnson but with much of his ruthlessness intact.
