Blago: impeachment because he "[fought] for families"

In one of the stranger press conferences in recent memory, the Illinois governor defends himself, attacks his enemies and quotes Tennyson.

The letters thread is now closed.

Blago Blowhard

Sounds of silence? No. Sounds of desperation? Yes.

His statements were rushed and blustery. His delivery was frenetic, his eyes darting around but never connecting eye-to-eye with any single soul in the room. Reminded me of college kids taking amphetamines (speed/uppers) to make it through finals, bug-eyed and rapidly verbose and out of touch with anything beyond self, and certainly out of touch with reality.

The gist of it was a delusional version of back-asswards campaigning. He chose to crow on health care issues, with pink ribbon cancer as a prominent point. I heard: “You can’t impeach me---look at all these regular folks here on the stage as props...er, I mean for visual effect (innuendo?)—but bleep it, I saved these bleeping people and their bleeping loved ones, really I did, I’m sure that I did, really really.”

The Donkey character from the Shrek films said "really, really" quite often. And you, Mr. Blagojevich, are no Donkey.

First Kipling, then Tennyson. To garner sympathy from book-learning or poetry-passionate sorts? Or to counter bad press to show he doesn’t always use those cussing words (“them’s fighting words”) that we've already heard in the tapes?

Go jogging, Blago. Pomade that hair and run like Gump, as far away as possible, to the edge of the world...

Someone's off his meds

He should get better drugs like the stuff "W" takes.

Chutzpah

The man's got it, I'll give him that, but he's a crook who needs to go to his cell quietly. He makes all Democrats look bad with his stupid antics.

He quoted from the wrong part of Ulysses

...shoulda started at the top.

It little profits that an idle king,

By this still hearth, among these barren crags,

Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole

Unequal laws unto a savage race

Man looked like every tweaker I've ever dealt with.....

Wow. What a trainwreck. Blago needs to lay off the pipe prior to public events.

Friday, January 9, 2009 01:51 PM

Ugh

I'm so embarrassed to live around the corner from the guy.

Blago plagurizes Ted Stevens

"Let me reassert to all of you, once more, that I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing.... I'm confident that, at the end of the day, I will be properly exonerated."

If I were Ted, I'd sue the bastard for copyright infringement.

Bad theatrics

Sounds like very bad theater to me. Does he really expect people to believe that the legislature is entirely composed of people bent on blocking anything to help families and the basic reason they're impeaching him is because he wants to improve health care, etc.? Come to think of it,he seems to be delusional enough that he probably does.

Modern America

"not because of any of the criminal allegations against him, but because he'd been working so hard for the children and families of his state."

Of course he did. This is modern America - a public figure must immediately don the mantle of “victim” and attempt to justify his actions as simply striving for justice for the downtrodden – anyone who disagrees is a racist/sexist/bigot.

It’s like every one of them has become a Mrs Lovejoy: “Won’t somebody PLEASE think of the children?!”

It has literally become impossible to parody how far public figures have taken the victimhood mantra. It's not funny. It's sickening.

Sociopath

I don't know why it didn't occur to me sooner. The conscienceless believe their own lies; that's what makes a good liar.

Friday, January 9, 2009 02:25 PM

Narcissist or Sociopath?

He sure is something. I'm leaning toward classic narcissist.

Blago

I'm personally going to miss him. He is great theater, and that hair! That hair. If there were such a thing as a lack of self awareness hall of fame he'd be right in line behind Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber and W. The difference between Blago and the rest is that he's probably more than a little crazy. But again, excellent entertainment.

Blago missed his calling as a republican

If he were a republican, he wouldn't have people from his own party ridiculing him for his bullshit. They'd be supporting him all the way. See Ted Stevens, and how they all rallied around him and said what a great guy he was. All he had to do was say "It wadn't me" and that was good enough for republicans to come to his side.

Democrats, on the other hand, don't seem to accept pure denial without a shred of credibility. Really, if Blago had thought this out a bit better, he would have switched parties before launching this bullshit campaign.

Life Imitates Art

Reminds me of nothing so much as Clay Davis' courtroom appeal in the final season of The Wire. I doubt it will prove as effective, and not just because he quotes Tennyson instead of Aeschylus.

We've Had All We Can Stand. We Can't Stands No More.

While the press has been given enough raw meat to gorge themselves for some time the sorry saga that goes on within Illinois government will continue to impact the lives of nearly 13 million of its citizens as state government has ground to a virtual halt. Nearing the 200th anniversary of his birth, the Land of Lincoln is tainted by scandal, corruption and abuse of power by a governor who knows no shame nor the art of humility. The Governor clearly has violated his oath of office and was engaged in numerous acts of malfeasance as he pursued and nurtured an environment of endemic pay-to-play politics that makes his predecessor look like an amateur by comparison. Yet he persists in dragging this out as he likens himself to characters in a Greek tragedy. He ended his delusional press conference by quoting the end of Tennyson’s immortal “Ulysses.” I will end my comments by quoting from the same and earnestly hope that the Governor will do the honorable thing and resign.

“The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;

The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep

Moans round with many voices. Come my friend.

T’is not to late to seek a newer world.”

Rod the Bod's Innocent Until Proven Guilty

I'm really starting to like the Governor of Illinois. He's well spoken, intelligent, fights for the little guy and won't go down without a fight. How can you not like this guy?

Saturday, January 10, 2009 07:28 AM

illinois

re illinois-as a resident of illinois and long time observer i see no proof that governor blagojevich broke a law. he may have but i think he is innocent until proven guilty and all action should have been delayed until after the inauguration. this was impulsive and the legislators followed each other like lemmings marching to the sea.our attention should be on helping the new administration get things under control, not on creating distraction.
