Cynthia McKinney's Israeli adventure

What was the former congresswoman doing on a boat that got in a confrontation with the Israeli navy?

The letters thread is now closed.

Wait a minute

Cynthia McKinney is anti-semitic because her FATHER said those things against the Jews? Is this a typo, or has the "If you say anything bad about Israel you're anti-semitic" witchhunt really gone this far to blame the daughter for the sins of the father?

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:09 AM

Why conjecture?

Why not call 'em up and ask some tough questions?

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:10 AM

Uh, yeah, you've told us what her father said...

No, do you have some actual quotes FROM Cynthia McKinney that bolster your implication that her father's statements reflect her own attitudes?

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:11 AM

I hate to say it...

because I almost universally hate your blog posts and analysis, but this was actually an informative, well written and well reasoned piece. Go figure.

Possibly the same as Captain McGonagle and the crew of the research ship USS Liberty on

the fourth day of the Six Day War back in 1967 when 43 American crewmen were killed and 170 wounded by the Israeli airforce. The Israelis are trying to control the news once again. Tzipi Livni is working overtime but those of us living in a freer world than the US know that the Israelis are keeping journalists out of Gaza and have rejected the French suggestion of a 48 hour ceasefire so as to let humanitarian aid and medical supplies into an area where over 360 have been killed in the last few days and untold numbers of men, women and children have been grievously wounded. America has disgraced itself once again!

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:24 AM

what about her?

I agree with the others. So, her FATHER said these things. Where are the quotes from her? Is it not possible to have an anti-semitic or racist parent but not be racist yourself?

Talk about guilt by association!

Anyone who would bring medicine to Gaza hates the Jews!

It's obvious! Look at her hair! Look at the way her face is shaped!, look at those eyes! Look at that mouth! Look at those lips! She is obviously a wild and crazy BLACK woman with featires FAR TOO AFRICAN for the mainstream.

AND SHE DARES TO SHOWBOAT WITH MEDICINE TO THE SWORN ENEMIES OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND JUST IN THE WORLD.

*THUNDERCRACK*

The palestinian!!! (lower case for emphasis)

Slingshots and rocks against tanks helicopters, missiles and jets ONE MORE TIME!

McKinney dares and presumes to bring MEDICINE to the FOE?

ANATHEMA!

OSTRACIZE HER!

DECLARE HER INSANE EVIL AND CORRUPT!

She tries to bring MEDICINE?

THE UNMITIGATED GALL!

What a hateful person!

(McKinney or Koppleman?)

Watch the video

To those who doubt that the anti-semitic comments reflect her beliefs, watch the video. Although it is not McKinney herself that makes anti-semitic comments, it is members of her entourage, in her presence. She had every opportunity to intervene, and didn't.

BTW, Alex got the quote wrong. According to the news link he provided, it's "Jews Have BOUGHT everybody," not "BROUGHT everybody."

The Israeli m.o

The Israelis will always get very nasty with anybody getting too close. The 1967 USS Liberty attack was the first major example of that modus operandi. Foreign journalists detained, deported and sometimes shot "accidently" in the occupied territories while observing and reporting on IDF and settlers actions are infamous by now. Whenever incidents like that occur, you can rest assured that someone was getting too close and payed the price. The former congresswoman is lucky to be alive.

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:36 AM

Also, read the post

Alex isn't accusing the former congresswoman of anti-Semitism. He's saying that, given the well-known and open anti-semitism of her father, members of her campaign staff, and others who claim to speak for her, putting her on that boat wasn't a wise PR move.

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:39 AM

It's not just her fathers words

People writing that obviously didn't watch the video and are unaware of her own personal history.

She surrounds herself with people who openly and commonly used Jew Hating rhetoric.

While I'm not a big fan of guilt by association, and I've never heard her use such language, she has heard people she employs and chooses to associate with on numerous occasions and I've never once heard her utter than such language is inappropriate either.

Standing by in silence whilst your own people engage in such filth does make you guilty.

McKinney is a nut, N-U-T

The "Green" Party cemented their irrelevance by making her their nominee. And no, it's not because of her race, it's because she is a clown. Ralph Nader was at least a serious candidate.

An absurd criticism of McKinney

It is patently ridiculous to suggest that anything her father said implicates her, but what did her father really say that was anti-Semitic?

If you replace "Jew" with "Muslim", such statements are par for the course, by hatemongers associated with the neocons. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, Koppelman!

Calling critics of Israel anti-Semitic has always been stupid, and it is so 20th century to give such charges any oxygen. If Jews behave badly, they deserve exactly the same criticism as Muslims, Christians, and Hindus! No more free pass, get over it. We deserve to be criticized as individuals rather than via our communal affiliation, but if others have to put up with it, so should Jews.

Could we have more on Alex's father? Family histories are often fascinating. With such a surname

it's unlikely that he was a Maori from New Zealand but, fair is fair, and if Cynthia McKinney's father is significant in her "adventure" (how thrilling!) Mr.Koppelman should explain to the slow learners among us what his own heritage is so that we can consider his views as objective or otherwise. It's the last day of 2008 and the people of Gaza are being hammered so I'll keep on hammering the keyboard for the dead and injured children who have suffered during this "blizkrieg". "A rolling stone gathers no Mossad".

McKinney Seeks Publicity

I think the real issue is that Cynthia McKinney is back in the news........ period.

This wack job spews illogic with almost the same casual abandon for cocepts of sentence structure as Sara Palin, making it deeply challenging to understand her critical salient point, which is that she loves the camera and loves the microphone.

And regardless of her father's history with anti-Semetism, the woman has enough wack behavior to cause one to wonder exacly what ANY reputable organization would want with her.

---

1. So McKinney's father said some tasteless, hateful things. What? Was he her campaign manager?

2. So McKinney was a marginal Green candidate. She was also a former congresswoman with a national profile. I'm guessing they couldn't get Harry Reid to accompany them on their peace and humanitarian mission.

Don't hate, participate. They were taking basic necessities into a war zone and they brought McKinney along to raise their profile and give their peace mission some more clout. People are dying at this very second. What are you doing, besides whinging on the blogs? You think they should spent a month lobbying in Washington and consulted PR focus groups to choose their guest list?
