I haven't been happy with Senator Reid for a good long while.
With only that one single instance of a half assed attempt to make the GOP actually filibuster, which lasted one night, Reid helped create a 60 vote threshold for anything instead of a simple majority. Any piece of legislation the GOP leadership didn't like during the last 2 years has had to have 60 votes to pass cloture to keep Reid from withdrawing it.
I'm hoping Senator Clinton would actually make the GOP stand up and actually stop Senate business to filibuster, i.e. actually hold open debate, instead of just having the threat be enough to derail legislation.
High on the list was foreign policy.
Fooled again...
Forgive my cynicism, but this whole tortured drama surrounding Hill as SoS is eerily reminiscent of the drumbeat to have her named VP.
I realize you are citing Obama sources, and not the usual anonymous Clintonistas (the same ones who, in their ham-fisted lobbying for the VP slot, probably cost her that post), but if Simon's "senior Obama aides" were in fact senior Obama aids, they wouldn't be discussing this stuff on or off the record.
Remember, those who are talking don't know, and those who know aren't talking.
I'll believe Hillary's SoS when it happens. Until then, it seems that the more it's discussed, the less likely it is.
Better that she should have a position that has a definite end date at most 8 years from now and, even more importantly, that she can be fired from, rather than she, a rabidly political operative who introduced an anti-flag burning amendment and is openly against gay marriage be given a life-time appointment to the Supreme Court.
Do you think that maybe that's the real game? Nomination to SCOTUS? I wonder if this isn't a bit of smoke and mirrors. Stevens will resign soon, I have no doubt. By the time he does Bill's stuff will have been vetted and it might then be a fairly easy nomination to get through. Maybe they offer her State next week and she turns it down. Once Stevens resigns she gets the nod? This is all pure speculation on my part and time will tell.
I happen to think SCOTUS would be a far better fit for her and I'd much rather see her there than at State. Has for how she'd rule on issues such as gay marriage, etc. is anyone's guess. You can't necessarily judge by political pronouncements in a campaign.
Anyway, I really do not understand why she is qualified to be SoS. I think it would be a huge mistake to appoint her.
Yeah, I do think that she's probably pro gay marriage and really doesn't think flag burning should be a crime but the fact that she was willing to adopt those positions for the sake of politics makes me not trust her. The idea that she'd have a position for life with no boss just gives me the heebie jeebies. She's too ambitious to be a good Justice imo. Plus also on a personal note, I'm TIRED of the past 16 years. Even though I loved Bill, I'd be happy to never have to hear about Clintons or Bushs ever again. I don't think she needs a life appointment. As a SoS, she'd have a boss and could be fired. I could live with that.
