Let me preface my remarks by saying that this is not to slam Gov. Napolitano. I am sure she is more than qualified for the position, perhaps the most qualified.
But, look at the cost. First, you would give up a governor's seat in a state that very easily can swing from red to blue. Second, you have perhaps the most popular (and well known) Democrat poised to run in 2010 for a Republican-held Senate seat. The Dems are so close to the magic number of 60, and McCain's seat could put them over that mark, and kick Lieberman out of the caucus once and for all (but that's a discussion for another day).
Let's face it...a cabinet appointment is almost always a death sentence for one's political career. And "W" did it with perfection. He eliminated more than one prominent, yet MODERATE, politician,, e.g. Christine Whitman and Tom Ridge. Where are they now?
I believe a more shrewd move would be to appoint Republican senators from states where their replacement would be hand-picked by a Democratic governor. It would be done in the name of bipartisanship AND it would increase the number of senate seats held by Dems.
If the Napolitano-is-going-to-DHS story is true,
and McCain can now count on an easy romp to another term:
Did O. just tell McCain that he'd appoint Gov. Napolitano to DHS ----
if McCain will bring along his side of the Gang of 14
to add to the newly-docile Lieberman's side whenever asked?
Is she also to provide a check on Lieberman?
Have we gotten Machiavelli the Prince instead of the Prince of Peace?
Is that a GOOD thing?

I don't know who Janet Napolitano reputation, or why Barack Obama won't pick Glenn Greewald.
I guess Mike Madden is not yet insane enough either? A guy who cuts dead trees, and make his living splitting, and hauling firewood in the rural sticks would do a fine job. I'm not teasing either.
I had a good boondocks conversation yesterday with a timberman. There's more common sense out in the working classes of America than politicians dare admit. So, listen tp real folks. And give credit for rural wisdoms. Thomas Paine's, 'Common Sense' is a good read.
If rural folks can't comprehend the gibberish, than politico's are not worth a bowl of bean kidney, rattlesnake, black eye pea, or navy bean and lima soup. Serious. Good bean soups, and hot bread.
Gov. Napolitano may know that Napoleon had a horse named Pumpernickel? The state government of France robbed farmers of the course rye grains. So, I hope Barack Obama picks statemen/ladies who don't steal. Barack Obama must pick the most honorable folks.
I feel like a loaf.
Slice Butter Rye.
Or Olive breads.
`Birch bark teas.
No tease all day.
O, I love no lies.
That's the truth.
McCain looks halfs dead?
Eat the blue cheese ryes.
Toast. Oven melt cheese.
No sneeze on oven bread.
Protect garden backyards.
Jan Brewer stinks. We have to find out who intends to run against her in 2010 and start raising money.
For the most part, the state legislature is a joke and Brewer is the punch line.
Crap. I'll get started after the first of the year.

Possibly both.

I would think so. One of the things that relieved me during the primaries was the gradual realization that Obama really knew how to play the game. Recent developments confirm this (Lieberman staying, the Daschle pick, etc). The liberal blogosphere needs to realize the game's chess not checkers, and that clever political maneuvering is important to implement one's agenda
If this pick is some Machiavellian move to keep McCain his seat, I see it as no biggie. Though he was easy to demonize in the election, truth is McCain has never been a big threat as a senator, often angering his side of the aisle more. There are bigger fish to fry.
I live in AZ (not exactly according to my desires) and I would HATE to lose Napolitano as our governor--even moreso if Brewer were her replacement. Shudder.
Napolitano is terrific. Smart. Sound judgment. Inclusive in her policies, i.e., giving heed to various sides of a given issue. And not afraid to "do the best thing" whether that's necessarily "popular" or not. I certainly understand why Obama would consider her for his cabinet.
I guess I'm selfish. I'd rather keep her as Gov'nr and then actively campaign for her to take McCain's Senate seat. I think she'd win that contest. Turning this red state blue would be ever so wonderful. (I grew up in CO--hey, finally blue this year! Yee-haw! I was spoiled by 20 years in NYC--blue blue blue.) I'm only speculating, of course, but I think it would be a tough decision for Napolitano, regardless of the prestige of a Cabinet appointment. In interviews, she seems to have a firm hold on her present status and future aspirations in AZ.
Well, time will tell.
...her, Richardson, Emmanuel, and all the others who came out hot and heavy and early and cut their deals in exchange for Cabinet positions.
How transparent is all that? Very. Knew it then. Know it now.
If you think your goddess Hillary didn't cut those same deals, you're an even bigger damn fool than I think you are. And if that's the case, check yourself immediately into the nearest mental health care facility before you hurt someone. Please.
Over at Slate.com, Dana Goldstein reminds that Napolitano was one of Anita Hill's counsel in the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, and that Republicans delayed her confirmation as U.S. Attorney for Arizona for a year out of lingering spite.
I don't know whether something like that is likely to recur, but you have to love the picture of Justice Thomas (feh!) receiving a request to recuse himself the first time a DHS matter goes up on certiorari.
Or is that spite?
Uh excuse me, but shouldn't Homeland Security be disbanded? It really hasn't secured anything and costs a whole bunch aka billions of bux! Like what, 89 billion to start many years ago, and has exceeded that buy lots more since. Talk about Pork Projects that really haven't succeeded! Wasn't this program put into being just to distract the american public?
Hasn't this program only succeeded in giving away tax payer dollars to more Corporate failures? I aint stupid! This program has sucked way too much money, time and effort to believe in anymore. Not that I ever did. Its helped no one, has been a proven waste of time, money and effort. Enough already with this total waste of time.
Time to bring back all of our National Gaurds Men and Woman to gaurd our home. Time to put the wiretapping back into the FBI, ATF, CIA and all of our other various security stuff where it was before. Shoot, dropping this, the most agresious aggresion project against our own folks has got to stop! We just can't afford it anymore.
Its downright detrimental to all those involed withen and without. It keeps a witch hunt amongst neighbors going on.
It keeps our available young military kids, and kids they are or should I say our children in a perverted mistrust mode. I personally would prefer to pay them to do actual things like build things, continue on with proper schooling, not constantly spying on who has sex via cellphone, internet and other outlets.
As for the adults supervisors involved. Oh my. Seems that they get to rob pretty much everyone blind.
Too many example's from high level coorporate robber scammers to low level robber scammers. It just doesn't work. Get rid of it.
Sincerely,
Tweeders
