The People of Alaska

OK,OK, I take back all the stuff I said about you in the "Election Winners and Losers" story. You don't have to secede now. Welcome to the United States of America.

Mike stole my "Series of Tubes" joke.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 07:18 PM

Thanks, God!

Looks like He just slammed a door on Sarah!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 07:33 PM

Happy Birthday, Teddy!!

It might be your birthday, but we are the ones getting the big gift and doing all the celebrating!!!

One down, two more (pending outcomes) to go!!!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 07:36 PM

Happy Birthday Uncle Ted!

I hope this message reaches you through the series of tubes ok. We will really miss you!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 07:56 PM

No Sarah??

So we have been spared Palin in the Senate??? Thank God!

A series of rubes

Coming from Alaska. A series of boobs? (Double entendre?)

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 08:35 PM

Ted Stevens got his tubes tied

and Senator-elect Mark Begich is no longer tied with nutty Uncle Ted. Congratulations and thanks, Alaska! Now the senate needn't perform a full hys-Ted-ectomy.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 08:39 PM

Hmmmm..

The tubes for Ted means fewer boobs in the Senate.

Ahhhh.h.h...

So, the Alex Forrest of the GOP will now have to plot her takeover of the Presidency from outside the perch of a Senate seat.

I may have to re-think my atheism.

Been a good couple of weeks. Obama wins, my wife passes her Cert exam, and Kenny Loggins comes to hang and sit in last night with my friends’ band in Vegas.

Now this. Life is again good.

Salon's not a truck? Not even an ice truck?

You mean we're not supposed to just dump stuff on Salon's pages? Somebody tell that to Paglia. Ba dum bum.

Time for Stevens to put on an "Incredible Sulk" tie. Ba dum ching.

But, as others have noted, the real joy here is that Big Teddy's defeat "rocks the foundation" of the Gosh Governor's Beer-Hall Putsch plans. Poor Palin.

But this doesn't come close to making up for Joe's Ho-mentum today.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 10:22 PM

Hooray!

Wonderful. Stevens can retire now until the big house and/or the Devil takes him.

Go Al Franken.

The wheels of justice grind slowly...

Stevens came remarkably close to beating Begich and only the strategy to get out the early vote saw Begich to the finish. Stevens was a bit over 1% behind. A third party candidate also gave Republicans haven to cast their vote for a conservative who pulled over 4%.

That sets up the delicious situation. Ted or the party or ten individuals can ask for a recount, but it will cost them $15,000 or so. Will the party kick in the dough for a convicted felon who can't be seated anyway, hoping to win a special election when he's ousted? Stevens, a notorious tightwad, doesn't like to pay for anything himself, which is why he was convicted. With the gutless Republicans probably refusing to oust him, his salary for the time it takes for the task may pay for the recount.

This should be interesting.

Two other races are noteworthy. The Palin/McCain ticket, as Sarah prefers to call it, got less than 60% of the vote. That's in a state where "R"s outnumber "D"s 5 to 3. The revelations exposed before and during the campaign have hurt her deeply. Next year there won't be the money, $1,200, that she passed out to all residents as a bribe while failing to fund shortfalls in the Constitutional Budget Reserve (rainy day fund) and state pension funds.

Ethan Berkowitz was running against a 17-term congressman whose indicitment has been expected for a year and a half. Don Young is infinitely less popular than Stevens and Ethan has a record of actually fighting corruption, instead of pretending to do so, as Palin did. Still, he lost 50-45%. Radical right wingers and fundamentalists regularly reminded the electorate that he was Jewish and, had been raised in San Francisco.

The arrogance of power

Good to see some justice in the world of the senate, especially after Leiberman managed to piss all over the Democrats and still hold on to his chairmanship. We'll just have to wait a few more years for Conn. to elect a Democrat in his place.

The wheels of justice grind slowly...

...because they haven't been oiled lately. Maybe now that Alaska has shown us how it's done, the electorate will no longer fear easy lubes.

Hey, at least I tried.

Begich beats Stevens in Alaska

As dis-tasteful as it may be for some, I sorta regret that Mr. Stevens lost his seat in the Senate. I was so looking foward to witnessing the republicans refusal to seat one of their own. Had Senator Byrd been convicted of the same crimes, the republicans would be calling for a lynching with Fox News providing live coverage of the event! I guess it really is true: "Time wounds all Heels"!

I Hate to be Captain Bringdown, but

there will be a re-count. She Who Must Not Be Elected will pay for it. Wouldn't surprise me to see First Dude Todd on the re-count committee. It ain't about him - he's dog meat - it's about HER and 2012.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 05:15 AM

Oddly Enough...

Senator Ted Stevens legacy is being flushed down an antique toilet that was improperly given to disgraced former Congressman Duke Cunningham.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 05:39 AM

@JoJoGunne

She Who Must Not Be Elected will pay for it.

More likely she'll make the State of Alaska pay for it, or maybe get somebody else to foot the bill. It's a pretty safe bet it won't be her own money.

Roll out the Pork barrel...

Let's have a barrel of fun!

Democrats take the Senate,

We got Uncle Ted on the run!

Sing-Sing for Senator Stevens,

Sing-Sing a song of good cheer!

Thank ghods that Palin

Will keep her tail in,

Alaska for one more year!

Hey I was planning on getting you a $29,000 fish sculpture, but I guess you already got one....

In honor of the old criminal bastard - and my father who liked the "Beer Barrel Polka" and would have been 83 this year if he had the kind of free government health care/socialized medicine that Uncle Ted has had for the last 40 years.

You prayed to God

You had faith in God that if you were meant to win the election God would make it happen. He didn't. Then you used his name again in your cutesy interview saying if there is a crack in any door that God opens for you, you will plough right through. I think he is giving you a message clear as day, and closing all these doors. Stay in Alaska and do your job as Governor and hope and pray that no more doors get closed for you (as you take that $7 million dollar deal for your book - Hockey Mom). What a joke!
