At an Obama phone bank, there's enthusiasm, reason to worry

One volunteer's story of a day making calls for Barack Obama, and the response -- some of it decidedly negative -- from those on the other end.

The letters thread is now closed.

I wouldn't put too much into this

Even the best organized campaigns get some people on their lists that shouldn't be, especially in a large state like Florida. It is frightening that anyone believes these non-truths about Obama, but I wouldn't get to worried that some alleged Democrats in the most conservative part of Florida think this way.

Ah, Pensacola

Also known to the rest of us in Florida as Lower Alabama.

Pensacola = Navy

I'm a retired Navy vet, and I would urge your poster not to put a lot of worry about a section of very old, very military, very conservative part of Florida. A lot of relatively misguided sailors are casting their lot with McPalin. But not this one.

So?

You say Antichrist like it's bad thing.

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:15 PM

hmmm

I thought the Antichrist would be shorter ...

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:16 PM

shorter antichrist?

McCain's only 5'7"

Keep in mind...

McCain is going to get millions and millions of votes. We can't convince everyone. Also, people in battleground states have been campaigned half to death, robocalled and polled to within an inch of their lives. I don't know where the writer was calling from, but we hosted a MoveOn calling party last week and the biggest challenge was getting people in those states to pick up their phones at all. Of the six or seven hundred calls we made, maybe ten percent -- probably less -- were answered by live human beings. And they were all MoveOn members, not a hostile enemy agent in the bunch. Still, they were watching their caller I.D. because in PA and CO and NV they had been targeted so much already.

All of which is to say, let's not get complacent, let's get out the vote to be sure, but keep telling ourselves, "We only have to win by one vote (figuratively speaking)."

This is what happens if you listen to too much talk radio

There is simply a large subset of the American population who do not read. Their entire knowledge of the world comes from talk radio, a few minutes of local TV news a day, and whatever they hear from their friends (who are just as under-informed as they are).

I know this, because these people are my relatives. They get their information from talk radio. Not good talk radio, mind you, but the kind designed to stir up drama.

I was talking to a relative last night. He said, "I am worried about the direction this country is going." I said, "What do you mean?" and he said, "Well, I think the country might become socialist."

I said, "Why do you think that?" and he said, "It looks like Obama is going to win." So I said, "Wait a minute, wait wait wait....where are you getting this?" Turns out he was listening to talk radio and he heard that Obama is a socialist... After a few more pointed questions from me, he backed down and admitted he didn't really know what he was talking about.

Apparently, if enough people repeat a talking-point accusation in the media, people will really believe it -- en masse!

This pisses me off so much. A huge portion of the U.S. electorate is willfully ignorant. And the media they're exposed to every day is willfully geared to play to that ignorance.

Florida Panhandle

Pensacola is the portion of Florida which fondly refers to itself as "Lower Alabama". Thus, the good folk who reside there (a good number of military personnel mixed in) may be more reflective of the immediate surrounding area ... than of the southern part of the state. So, don't be too disheartened. It really comes as no surprise.

Obama isn't going to win Florida ...

... but he is going to carry Ohio and Virginia, so it won't matter.

Barach the Messiah (of the other realm)

I live in MA and at a neighborhood gathering my well incomed, well traveled neighbors informed me that he was the antichrist mentioned in the "left behind" novels. Admittedly, I do happen to live in a redneck pocket of MA where I see more McCain signs than Obama. I am truly worried about this country. If McCain should squeak by, it almost seems like it would be a triumph of ignorance and darkness to be more exact. Since I am rapdily becoming an atheist thanks to all these wonderful "Christians" I can only pray that the outcome reflects a sane decision on the part of our electorate. It may be the last time I pray.

I grew up in Pensacola

I apologize.

Believe it or not, here in New England where I live now, I actually have neighbors who said the same thing. They are FROM here.

If ignorance is bliss, there are a lot of happy people in this world.

O'rly?

Could it be that some folks do not want to vote for another corporatist war candidate who bails out Wall Street crooks at the taxpayer's expense and who promises to spend trillions on programs and cut your taxes at the same time he reduces the deficit?

Nah, they probably are all racists, nazis and rednecks. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Anyone who disagrees must be some kind of monster!

Red State part of Florida

As others have pointed out, the Florida panhandle is known as Lower or Southern Alabama. It's always been red state country. Probably a lot of those dems back from the days when Strom Thurmond, George Wallace and Richard Shelby were Dems.

How you phonebank

once you identify you are not talking to an Obama supporter, you thank them and move on to the next call.

And if you can, you ask your supervisor for a better list.

Obama for President

As a Business owner who employs (30) people I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama will be our next President and that my taxes and fees, will go up in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, I determine that the customer will have to see an increase in my fees to them of about, 8%. I will also have to lay off (6) of my employees. This really bothered me as we are family here and didn't know how to choose who will have to leave. So, this is what I did: I strolled through the parking lot and found (8) Obama bumper stickers on my employee’s cars. I have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. If you have a better idea, let me know. I am sending this letter to all Business owners that I know.
