Obama's grandmother dies

The nominee had taken time away from the trail to be with his ailing grandmother, Madelyn Dunham.

The letters thread is now closed.

Sad news indeed

I was really hoping she'd make it past the election.

My thoughts go out for Obama and their family.

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:52 PM

...

You have got to be fucking kidding me.

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:53 PM

:(

n/t

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:55 PM

I'm sorry.

This has to be hard.

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:58 PM

Sad

That's a God awful shame. Two days and she could've heard the words, "President Barack Obama". I suppose she couldn't have been more proud than she was already, but it still seems a shame. Madelyn, this vote's for you.

Monday, November 3, 2008 01:59 PM

My condolences

I lost my own mom this year

My hope carries on

For a world of friendly fellowship

Without petty prejudices and soul crippled fear.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:00 PM

Too sad for words

just one day away. My heart breaks for her and the family.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:00 PM

:(

I can't imagine the amount of emotion Obama is feeling. He must be overwhelmed times ten. My prayers and thoughts go out to him and his family during this emotional time.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:01 PM

Correct decision

As usual, Sen Obama had this one all figured out and acted accordingly.

A time of sorrow of course.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:04 PM

Damn.

such a shame.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:05 PM

She will still see him be president

She wanted to get there in time to see him from the best seat in the house.

Bless her wonderful family and her remarkable grandson.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:05 PM

Rest in Peace

She left the world a better place than she found it. She gave us a remarkable man, poised to accomplish remarkable things.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:07 PM

Bizarre timing

That's really sad. I don't think there's much of a "bright side" to this, but I do think that she must have been very pleased with how well things are turning out for her grandson. I also imagine she must have had a lot of personal pride in the quality of her guidance and attention over the years.

One of the sweetest details I noticed in the stories about her, over the last week or so, is that Obama referred to her as "Grandma Toot."

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:12 PM

I feel like crying myself

It's hard to even put into words how ironically sad her death is, today of all days. Bless her for her life -- her good acts will live on, benefiting this country and world through her grandson.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:12 PM

My heart is breaking

That poor woman - in what 36 hours, she would have been watching her grandbaby on TV tell us he's going to be president. No fair. If there is an afterlife, I hope she and the 44 year old campaigner from Nevada get front row seats in front of that celestial Jumbotron...

Don't go by any of the right wing sites

Unless you will have the opportunity to sterilize your computer afterwards.

They are already yukking it up and/or calling conspiracy (he went to Hawaii to kill her or she died weeks ago and they saved the news till now.)

I thought of linking them to some of the recent discussions about the death of the RNC and traditional conservative movement because they have distilled all that was bad to an evil paste. Instead I bailed before my eyes started to bleed.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:14 PM

damn shame

it's sad she wasn't able to make it one more day, but who knows if she was even conscious up until the end. as lives go, hers was long and accomplished and worthy of celebration. just a day or two too short. god bless her. the timing here is incredible.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:21 PM

:(

Wow, what a giant bummer. My thoughts go out to the family. It's too bad she didn't get to see her grandson win tomorrow.

Monday, November 3, 2008 02:22 PM

@ meffert

considering that some right-wing blogger / columnist suggested that Senator Obama would smother his grandmother if he thought it would get him the election, that's no surprise. These sorts of reaction say more about the person who writes them then about the target.

I'd say they ought to be ashamed of themselves, but that would require that such capacity had been demonstrated. Disgraceful.

The California Republican Party really wants your vote...

If it wasn't so pitiful, it would be funny. On the day before the election, the California Republican Party has filed a complaint against Barack Obama and his campaign:

Obama for America violated federal law by converting its campaign funds to Senator Obama's personal use. Senator Obama recently traveled to Hawaii to visit his sick grandmother...Therefore, the Obama Campaign violated the FEC's ban on "personal use" of campaign funds when it paid over $100,000 for the Campaign's charter to fly to Hawaii without obtaining reimbursement from Senator Obama.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken?

My heart goes out to the Obama family.

My apologies to all of you but this was the first thing that came to my mind after hearing the news about the passing of Sen. Barack Obama's grandmother:

I was standing by my window,

On one cold and cloudy day

When I saw that hearse come rolling

For to carry my mother away

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

I said to that undertaker

Undertaker please drive slow

For this lady you are carrying

Lord, I hate to see here go

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

Oh, I followed close behind her

Tried to hold up and be brave

But I could not hide my sorrow

When they laid her in the grave

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

I went back home, my home was lonesome

Missed my mother, she was gone

All of my brothers, sisters crying

What a home so sad and lone

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

We sang the songs of childhood

Hymns of faith that made us strong

Ones that mother maybelle taught us

Hear the angels sing along

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

Will the circle be unbroken

By and by, lord, by and by

There’s a better home a-waiting

In the sky, lord, in the sky

Godspeed Mrs. Dunham.

The other grandmother

She is still alive and has said that she was present for Obama's birth - in Kenya.

What other grandmother?

What birth?

What Kenya?

Nothing to see here folks, move along.
