Quote of the day

Steve Schmidt offers a prediction, in the form of a pep talk to McCain campaign staffers.

No, Steve

They're losers.

Here's

something else that'll define McCain campaign participants as losers: 270 electoral votes for Obama in 9 days.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 10:37 AM

...Or...

...to be a member of John McCain's campaign team.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 10:40 AM

was it over...

...when the germans bombed pearl harbor?

Sunday, October 26, 2008 10:43 AM

True, but kind of banal, and not reflective of the Republican campaign of late...

I've voted early, for Obama (in Ohio) yesterday - but I actually agree with Schmidt, at least superficially. Still, it's not the most original of sentiments, and it doesn't take into account the despicable and desperate Republican campaign of late.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 10:50 AM

Gee Steveo

In my book, you're a loser when you support a smear and fear campaign the likes of McSame/Barbie.

No honor in that Steve. No honor whatsoever.

Amazing, Schmidt doesn't realize what he said

In essence, to say that IS curling up and giving up.

But what he's really doing is what they're ALL doing on that side, getting ready to blame someone for the loss (Sarah Palin, Keith Olbermann, the Liberal Press in general, a great Left-Wing Conspiracy, even former boss Karl Roverer) -- but whoever gets the blame, the message is simple (in playground terms):

"NOT MY FAULT!! HIS (or HER) FAULT!!"

Sunday, October 26, 2008 10:54 AM

Gosh, it almost sounds like...

Gosh, it almost sounds like a concession, doesn't it? His boss, John, is not going to be happy with that!

Maybe they could try blaming Nader, like so many Dems did in 2000.

The Republicans already won this election

They won when Obama decided that instead of trying to use his speaking talents to move moderate Americans toward a truly progressive aganda, he would allow Axelrod to run a classic Rovian campaign, using Republican attack politics to win the Presidency. They won when the netroots decided that instead of doing the hard work to win people over to the progressive cause, they'd simply fight for whatever could beat Bush. Public financing? That's for suckers (and, apparently, Republicans). FISA? What the heck... it's not like Civil Liberties are REALLY important! I know... after Obama wins, he will suddenly turn around and renounce all of the things he said during the election and turn into a liberal. Right. If you believe that, I have a really hot tech stock to sell you.

What are we winning, folks? The nation has moved to the right so far that it's hard to find a liberal in the Democratic Party and the right is defining new boundaries for ultra-conservatism. I was looking at the political compass test yesterday and was surprised to find that the only high-level Democrat who was close to me politically was Kucinich. Obama and Clinton and Edwards were all well over the line in the Conservative/Authoritarian quadrant. When I think about it, their positions on most issues are closer to McCain's than mine. I'm betting that Rove has a bottle of champagne chilling in the fridge right now, to pop open when Obama gives his victory speech. That moment will show that his methods can win over anybody to vote for politicians who don't really reflect their beliefs - including Democrats. It will show that the Democratic Party has become the same politically as the old Republican Party.

Looks to me like:

The Repugs campaign is self destructing from within. Couldn't

happen to a better bunch of losers

Maybe It Just Means..

The volunteers see reality more clearly than Schmidt does. The time grows shorter, and Obama's lead in the polls is holding steady. The McCain Campaign has been an epic visit from the F***-up Fairy. No, I don't mean Gov. Palin exclusively, although her contributions, from disastrous TV interveiws, a greed for power that's only matched by her Constitutional ignorance, her notable lack of a modern, compassionate sensibility toward other women, and an enthusiasm for shopping with other people's money that makes her look like the Elena Ceaucescu of Alaska, have been heroic.

Poor Old McCain, I almost feel sorry for him. He turned to Rovian politics in desperation to get elected just as the whole country collectively appeared to have had it with Fear and Smear tactics. He's had a reverse Midas Touch--everything he touches has turned to dross. If he'd stuck to "I will not take the low road to the highest office in the land" things might look better for him, now. (A better VP choice would help, too.) He still might have lost, but would have done so with his honor and dignity intact.

Of course, this doesn't mean we should relax. GOTV, Vote yourself-- THEN celebrate!

the gop owes a lot to mccain.

after choosing dubya, watching him destroy the republican appeal, the gop is lucky to have a candidate at all. the fact is, he went in as a big loser, and if he comes out a big loser no one should show surprise.

mccain would be a hero, if he showed any grace at all. but he didn't- he showed he was not in the race out of any principle, but rather because he really, really wanted to be president. if he had any self respect he wouldn't have run. if he had any respect for the electorate, he would have said "the gop has betrayed america, vote democratic".

the people that ran his campaign, for profit or principle, are amoral hyenas. they aren't losers, because they work for the rich and will get paid, one way or another. if they have lost this election, they are ready for the next one or the next. they don't lose anymore than anthrax loses, victory is intermittent but certain. and each interlude in power corrodes the nation further.

if you keep handing the keys of the nation to one 'king', you will keep getting commodus or nero or caligula, and each will file off a bit more of the nation's wealth and freedom.

give some thought to establishing democracy, if it's not already too late.
