Not quite the kiss of death. I'll understand if Barack Obama says thank you 'n stuff, but that's definitely an icky endorsement.
at this time, is just another move by the Obama campaign which show how damn smart they are.
They have captured the news cycle from the McCains...put the people, our fundraising and an huge Republican figure able to speak in complete sentences for over seven minutes at the forefront...on the high road.
And in my view, that pretty much frames this debate as the highest aspirations of the American people against the McCain stunts and slime which has disgraced McCain forever.
Our best selves against the worst inclinations...that is how this race will be historically portrayed.
Eat that one Freepers.
Is this the same General Powell who in 1992 stopped our troops from decimating Saddam’s army against the wishes of his field generals when we had 500,000 troops in Iraq and could have done the job correctly and made Iraq a success and avoided the mess we have now? The same Colin Powell who failed to criticize Yasser Arafat when he repeatedly sent suicide bombers into Israel?
Perhaps 911 has faded into the horizon of the left wing in our country but Islamic terrorists are not giving up on their desire to destroy us.
McCain wants to defeat them, Obama wants to negotiate with them. If your head is in the clouds and you truly believe we can negotiate with people who fly airplanes into buildings, send suicide bombers into busses, restaurants, and supermarkets to murder innocent men, women, and children in Israel and fifteen other countries since our 911, then vote for Obama. If you believe that terrorism, in all its forms, must be defeated then vote for McCain.
In a time of war, terror, and evil I choose the most experienced candidate, not the one I think is a “cool dude” but has zero experience.
I have no respect for Colin Powell's opinion about anything. He has done profound damage to America and Iraq with his lies for Cheney and Bush. The "good soldier" has no credibility.
How do those grapes taste, pal?
How does it feel to be a part of the biggest single American political failure----movement conservatives?
Your people can't govern...
you run candidates who can't articulate a cogent thought...
and
your base is made up of marginalized haters who you wouldn't consider having as neighbors.
And it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
How does it feel to know that your greed and venality has lead you into one place...
as a shill for the most disgraceful and desperate campaign in American history?
The grapes were sour anyway.
not sure if it was some sort of epiphany, a lightning bolt or what, but it appears Colin Powell his given up his post as GOP shoe shine boy, got the scent of sulphur out of his nose and is coming back to the real world.
happy to see Colin get that chain off of his neck. what next for the retired general, job with the Dems?
I agree 100%.
They have captured the news cycle from the McCains...put the people, our fundraising and an huge Republican figure able to speak in complete sentences for over seven minutes at the forefront...on the high road.
Hah, this was *exactly* my thought as I listened to his eloquent comments. I sent the link to my college-student eldest suggesting that he take some time off from studying for midterms to listen to what Colin said (especially regarding anti-Muslim rhetoric).
The sad part is I found his eloquence so "startling" (in part due to the complete absence of divisiveness) -- there was a time in this country when the ability to state your political beliefs in an intellectually coherent fashion was assumed to be required for higher office, now the Republicans would have you believe that it is a detriment. Palin represents the apogee of that belief. Hopefully enough folks in this country have had enough.
Powell is looking at the entire picture along with many other republicans.First his lies about Palling around,10%mavericking.His choice of a woman who cannot lead anyone and has bad bad judgment also. How can any Godfearing american. His entire campaign is lowering american standards.Other Goverment are laughing at McCain Palin mainily for his choice of this person. Its GOOD TO BE IN THE GREAT NORTHWEST.(NORTH WEST NEW HAMPHIRE)Please who is John Mccain?wWe know Palin is non american.Alaska Indepdence Party.
I'm voting for Peace, not "war and terror" This us vs. them, black and white and displaced blame dynamic has gone on long enough. This philosophy is what the perpetrators of 9/11 were running on too. Enough people have died for this stupidity already - grow up!
The neocons and the hard Right have always hated Powell but their votes were never in play.
The liberals don't love Powell either, but their votes were never in play.
Powell has tremendous appeal to the middle and to independents and his comments were moving and effective.
It makes me wonder why he was a Republican in the first place. Certainly he is an intelligent man. I can only think that he likes to back a winner and now that the winds have changed into favoring the Democratic party it seems that Obama is getting all sorts of endorsements.
Let's not kid ourselves here. If McCain was ahead by 1% instead of down by 8-10 we would not be seeing Powell. When a ship goes down everybody wants off.
I see someone is already mouthing the neo-con talking point that "if it hadn't been for Powell, we could have invaded Iraq and beat up Saddam the FIRST time! Honest!"
Of course, when we eventually DID invade Iraq, the Hussein regime was even weaker than it was back then, and we fair much waltzed our way over what was left of their army on our way to Baghdad. How did that turn out, again?
As someone who was in the service during the '90s--thanks. I only wish he had stood up to the second Bush administration in the same manner that he stood up to the first.
