I'm not thanking Powel for his endorsing Obama but for saying what Republicans need to hear. It is time for other moderate and TRUE conservatives to stnad up the the rabid right that has ruined the GOP. To stand up to the hatred being at the Palin rallies. Stop the bigotry against Muslims. Stop insinuating Obama is a terrorist. Thank you Colon for telling the congress woman from MN, Backmann, that her comments about who is pro-American and who is anti American need to stop. Seh sounds liek Jseph McCarthy.
Powell would not say it but I'm saying. Stop your racism too.
To those now parroting "Obama is as a socialist'. Maybe you are willing too give up your social securituy?
why didn't he resign? After all, the man was almost 66 years of age and probably entitled to a very generous pension. There isn't much wriggle room for all those who want to turn him into a heroic figure because the facts are against them. The "just obeying orders" excuse was used by Hitler's henchmen during the Nuremberg Trials and the US is not a tyranny as Nazi Germany was. He could have made his excuses and left the government before foisting a huge lie on the world.

Not "the" wrong, but wrong.
And Kissinger endorsed McCain, not OBAMA (no I am not saying Kissinger didn't endorse himself as it seems above).
First, peeps1: while I wish to give Powell the benefit of the doubt on the Iraq war, he was the Secretary of State, not a general, when he went before the UN. His speech convinced many skeptics to support the war.
Powell knew he did the wrong, later calling it a blot on his record. He did the right thing when he resigned. My opinion is he had the ability to resign before he gave the UN speech.
Second, something stinks: Kissinger endorsed McCain, not Kissinger.
It makes me wonder why he was a Republican in the first place. Certainly he is an intelligent man. I can only think that he likes to back a winner and now that the winds have changed into favoring the Democratic party it seems that Obama is getting all sorts of endorsements.
Let's not kid ourselves here. If McCain was ahead by 1% instead of down by 8-10 we would not be seeing Powell. When a ship goes down everybody wants off.
peeps1..I tend to think he got out on his own by resignation. I too have admired Gen. Powell and actually believe that HE would make a great president. His Obama endorsement and more so the reasoning behind his decision confirm my beliefs. I share your gratefulness.
Benthead..Absolutely agree with your sentiments. If I may, though, I think we are still in a “Cold War”. With winter coming, it’s going to get even colder. I’m talking about the “war” within the borders.
Should Obama ascend to the Presidency in January (I hope so), we’re still looking at about half the country who oppose his approach. Nothing much different than it has been for a long time but for one element. Our homegrown “extremists”. Some of them are more than frightening and the path the Republican campaign has taken, especially since the adoption of Palin as VP hopeful, only stokes the fire. Powell’s reasoned conclusion is more than likely lost on a good segment of those extremists who would neither listen to the reasoning nor simply be unable to comprehend it.
Just went to Faux news... nothing on Powell nada... zip. 2 hours after the fact We report you decide. Its Joe the plumber all news all the time, So funny I can barely contain myself. Hey trolls care to discuss why yer favorite news source ain't got a comment
But everything he said here was right. He put into words what I've been think for quite a while. It's nice to hear it from the mouth of someone of great esteem and power. Quite frankly, it was beautiful. Had Powell run in 2000 like I thought he might, I very well might have voted for him.
On my fantasy political team, I'll trade Joe Lieberman, Henry Kissinger and Zell Miller for one Colin Powell.
He is also a liar. Now that Kissinger has also endorsed Obama can there be any doubt that Obama is a War Candidate promising us more war under the brilliant guidance of Zbignew Brezinsky and Joe Biden.
Colin Powell just wants a job with the Obama administration and the opportunity to do to Iran what he did to Iraq.
Powell, like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and RIce is a war criminal.
Nice endorsement!
If the GOP, McCain or Fox News has some specifics about Obama and Ayers why don't they present it? Colin Powell knows how the GOP gets elected - by using Rove tactics of creating fear and mistrust! Fear is not what this country needs now. What impressed me about Obama was when he led the Harvard Review he worked to make it a first class paper and did not promote left or black agendas. He actually hung out with both conservative and liberal friends. Obama was also in the top 10% of his class at Harvard while McCain was in the bottom 10% in the Naval Academy. Do we want another below average student and boozing son from wealthy parents leading this country? Or, a bright guy who worked hard and rose to success from a humble background? Just look at the way the two are campaigning and think about who could bring the country back together.
I never did blame the Iraq War on Powell or even the unseemly performance at the U.N.
He is a General, and reported to the Commander in Chief. Soldiers do what they are ordered. His only out was to resign or be releived. Which he did or was (depending on who you listen to). After which, he told the truth as much as he could.
I am grateful to General Powell for being on "our" side and the side of the Country's.
