Colin Powell endorsement fever

Will the former secretary of state declare his intentions on Sunday's "Meet the Press"? And why should we care?

The letters thread is now closed.

It's a dual edge sword

If he endorses Obama the right wing will crank up the slime machine full tilt, questioning his loyalty etc. The left will go on about the UN etc. If it helps... well, I'll take it. He will just be another mark in rising tide Of Obama support falling on the heels of the Major Newspaper endorsements. Besides it will take the focus off that Shithead the Plumber bullshit. You know how the MSM operates- SHINY OBJECT! SHINY OBJECT!!! QUICK!! LOOK OVER THERE!!!

Colin, the cowardly lion

All the blogs and cable bigmouths (Chris Matthews et al.) are formally predicting Powell will endorse Obama on Meet the Press. I'm not so sure. If there's one thing about Powell's career that has been consistent for 30 years and more, he's NEVER taken a clear, unambiguous moral stand. This is a guy who helped cover up the My Lai massacre (see Robert Parry's excellent work on that subject); was instrumental in the Iran Contra affair, and then weaseled his way out of it; and lied about WMD at the UN, knowing his assertions were lies. More likely, he's trying to get publicity for a forthcoming book or phony-baloney charity project.

At this stage...

it would represent a pile on...

and at this point, liberals might want to recognize that the campaign is no longer directed at them...but more to those impressed by the Bandwagon Effect, which kicks in around now.

By the way

Andrew Leonard has had the best War Room entries since Tim Grieve left.

Well.

Before Y`all put the "Hate Colin" hat on, two points:

1) It will sway a lot of undecideds, and maybe the man feels it is his duty to help out avoiding a Mc Cain presidency. Maybe he is, not unlike me, unsure of the numbers. It will also help shore up the not-racist-but vote, because Mr. Powell is a solid military man, etc.

2) Maybe he needs to make an atonement? And this may mean a lot to professionals inside the US armed forces that Obama has to work with if he wins (and survives).

has-been fever

Wow, Colin Powell's still around. Who knew?

Saturday, October 18, 2008 09:07 AM

The obvious reason

If he does endorse Obama, I'm sure the final clincher was McCain's pick of Sarah Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Powell, too little, too late!

I dn't care whether Powell endorses Obama or not. He is way too little and way too late.

Powell is not the guy I thought he was. He is not needed and is doing nothing more than jumping on the bandwagon. Powell really strikes me as nothing more than a cheap opportunist. And to think that at one time, I thought he was going to be our first black prez. What a total let-down and waste of time Powell turned out to be.

So once again, too little, too late.

Feral Colin

Never mind Powell's embarassing, humiliating, betrayal-of-his-own-legacy, participation in providing cover for the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq.

Werther already covered it, but Powell's moral authority was lost in 1968, and in the 80s, and it's only the majority of the country's ignorance of its own history that even gives Colin Powell the veneer of being a "good guy." He's always been the yes-man for the Republicans. So what if he endorses Obama? It ultimately means nothing beyond the Republicans moving so far right of center that even Colin Powell can't endorse their candidate. At most, it's Powell seeking some payback from the Bush League for using him so badly.

Say Whatever You Want About Powell, But Consider This

Do you think a career military man can stomach the possibility that Sarah Palin could become Commander-in-Chief?

I don't think so.

Saturday, October 18, 2008 10:37 AM

My tinfoil hat may be showing...

But I think Powell was somehow blackmailed into giving that testimony to Congress that supported the argument for invading Iraq.

If the blackmailer is still out there, and Powell's still concerned about it, he may very well not endorse Obama, no matter how he's actually going to vote.

Disgusting

While doing some online stuff this morning, I also had MSNBC on. The disgusting comment by A.M. commenter "Alex"(sp?) came across that Powell would, "of course" endorse Obama for no other reason than his race. Will we ever again have the benefit of news reporters who keep their person opinion/bias out of reporting a story and leave that conclusion to us? This "Alex" person (now blond, used to be brunette) stops short of discounting every Democratic report as clap-trap; both in her sarcastic tone and refusal to ask follow-up questions of whomever has been invited to provide external reporting.

The Value of a Powell Endorsement = zero

The guy is damaged beyond belief. Putting his coverup of My Lai aside, the guy sold a war and knew what he was selling was pure unadulterated bullshit. Then he hung around while the neocons made him carry more shit for the administration.

Even now, he fails to act decisively. The man is a disgrace.

Powell is a war criminal and should keep his mouth shut.

Powell is a scum bag.

Just because he distanced himself from the Bush Neo-Cons after he gave the Speech of Lies at the U.N selling the Iraqi invasion doesn't make him any less a war criminal.

He knew the evidence against Saddam was flimsy at best but read the script anyway.

If you disagree with me i beg you to actually look at the evidence.

Powell belongs on the stand at the Hague.
