Live blogging: McCain keeps swinging, but his punches aren't landing

If he's going to continue to attack, John McCain needs to get voters to connect with him, or he's in trouble.

The letters thread is now closed.

Alex, keep updating the meter....

...I'm obsessed too but am watching online and CNN dosen't have it online. Damn them.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:34 PM

The meter is on CNNs live feed stream #2

I'm watching the meter feed. It's funny but I'm seeing the Republicans rating Senator Obama higher than either Democrats or independents for alot of the time. What's up with that?

Standing tall

Yes, in presidential elections the taller candidate nearly always wins, GWB being one of the exceptions.

Obama needs to use the word short a few times, perhaps talking about McCain coming up short on various issues. This will get viewers thinking about how short McCain is.

Whoops, here's the link

http://www.cnn.com/live/

It's under "Voters rate debate performances"

I'm on a mac

CNN's help sight says the PC people get a better stream!

The Lines

I'm not watching on an HDTV, but I'm watching the Men/Women Uncommited Lines. Women are loving Barak, men not as much.

McCain is scoring about the same as Brokaw.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:38 PM

Tax policy

Here we go! Obama is going to raise taxes! I love how McCain talks about fixing the economy and that's as far as his answer goes. We're going to fix it...And that's all.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:39 PM

Senator Obama's tax plan will increase taxes on 50% of small business revenue?

Didn't Senator Obama address that in the first debate?

"REALITY: Roughly 97% Of Small Business Would Not Be Affected By Obama’s Tax Plan"

Obama's trying to point that out but Brokaw isn't letting him.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:39 PM

Uh oh

Brokaw has just made it possible for McCain to tell lies without giving Obama the opportunity to call him on it. I think that's what football players call "a hole."

Tax Cuts are the Opiate of American Politics

Everybody has to propose tax cuts. And every Republican has to accuse every Democrat of wanting to raise taxes. And it's a side issue!

Taxes already are low. We cannot cut them any more. Phony issue.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:41 PM

Found it!

I'm a dork

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:42 PM

McCain...

is pushing that "my friends" like Palin was pushing "maverick." Ugh. It sounds so disingenuous.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:42 PM

Short Stop

Interesting point about the furniture making McCain look short. Other factors being equal, Americans generally vote for the taller candidate.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:43 PM

Pre-9/11 Mindset

While both candidates have a pre-9/11 (2008) mindset, my (vastly reduced) money is still on Senator Obama. Concerning "entitlement" programs however, I would like one of them to address how Social Security has been robbed consistently since the 1980s. The program would be solvent if hadn't been raided to pay for other government spending.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:45 PM

AEBarks, great point

"We're going to fix it." They keep saying that. The never say how. Both McCain and Palin have claimed that they will "get rid of" all the greed and corruption in Washington and on Wall Street. Laughable on the face of it, but then again... Bush claimed that he would rid the world of evil. So I'm glad to see they're dialing back to specific, achievable, measurable goals.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:45 PM

McCain is connecting less as the debate goes on

In the beginning, McCain was registering about as high as Obama for his responses. Obama's readings continue to be high, but McCains are staying pretty close to neutral and even dipping occasionally into negative territory. (Based on CNN's responses from uncommitted Ohio voters.)

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:45 PM

There he goes again

The 94 times claim flies again.

Can Senator Obama rebut it this time? Nope.

Oh, and all that Tip O'Neil and Reagan bipartisanship stuff is a long time ago. The GOP is lots nastier these days.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:45 PM

Why's he repeated debunked Palin lines?

Palin gave that same line about voting 94 times for raising taxes or against tax cuts - it was debunked, and also shown that by the same criteria they're counting, McCain's voted something well over 300 times for the same things. Why would he bring it up again when it's been disproved? Seems . . . I don't know. That's a strange strategy.

Brokow Is Working for the McSame Campaign

and it shows. McLame is rambling on and on about stuff he does not believe or understand. Brokow has cut Obama off on several occasions. Its not even subtle.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:46 PM

As Sarah Palin might ask it...

...Are they ever gonna tie Eye-rack into this economical talk? What about all that borrowed money we have wasted there? That is the biggest economic factor. Nail McCain with it.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:48 PM

McCain coming up short

I'm glad you brought up the chair thing, Alex -- I noticed it as well. McCain definitely got reamed on the seating. Obama should run hard with that... "McCain is trying to sell the country short; his desire to shrink spending is dwarfed by the size of the problems our country faces. We can only look down on his little tax plan. This is a time for a broad, long view, not tiny, short-term solutions."

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:49 PM

Did McCain...

just imply that lights weren't enough to alert him that his time was up? That he needed a little WAVE?! What is happening?

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 06:57 PM

flatlining

I'm getting a kick out of watching this audience-reaction thing on CNN.com. (BTW, if you're working on a Mac, try watching with RealPlayer.) When McCain talks about health insurance -- good luck ever getting insurance on your own, Senator, with all your pre-existing conditions -- the line is absolutely flat. Are people indifferent, in awe, or asleep when he talks?

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 07:02 PM

on the job training

Whoa! My "friend" just told me we don't have time for on the job training. Has anyone introduced him to his running mate?

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 07:05 PM

The furniture is the first thing I noticed ...

It makes McCain look horrible. Obama looks like a GQ photoshot.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 08:59 PM

And who dressed him?

Yes, the stool made him look short, but so did that bright red tie that hung down to his crotch. Handlers?
