Bill O'Reilly vs. Barney Frank

Forget Biden-Palin, the real fireworks Thursday night came during a screaming match between O'Reilly and Frank.

The letters thread is now closed.

Bill O'Reilly vs. Barney Frank

Good smear journalism...just like Rove tutored them..

Billo the clown continues to prove he's an idiot..

Friday, October 3, 2008 07:58 AM

Keep trying

Good to see ol' Barney so adroitly raising BO's alcohol pressure. With luck, someone will eventually trigger a fatal aneurysm.

Oooh... did I really say that? Shame on me!

Proper Respect to Barney Frank

Props to Barney. O'Reilly is a blow hard.

Bill O'Reilly vs. Barney Frank

I just don't understand why O'reilly is relevant.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:15 AM

Why Puff Orally

It's probably wise, despite the temptation, never to mention O'Reilly's show or what happens on it. He's not even a right-wing pundit; he's a sad sack with a narcissistic personality disorder. Can we just stop paying attention to these pathological types?

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:20 AM

And Fox "Murdoch" promised Obama that he would be fair

That is it -- no Dems should appear on Fox until Murdoch apologizes and FIRES O'Reilly, that sad sack of shit.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:20 AM

Maybe Koppelman is the blow hard

Sorry, but Barney Frank is, unsurprisingly, lied about and insulted by a freakish media hot dog; and handles himself quite well. Is Salon trying to push the "Both Sides are guilty/nobody is guilty" rubbish too?

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:25 AM

A perfect union

The perfect example of why same sex marriage should not only be tolerated, but actively promoted................Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann

The happy couple can take turns bitch slapping each other.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:34 AM

competing

It's interesting you see them competing "to see who can be the bigger blowhard" - if Frank had stayed quiet, I guess he would have been intimidated by O'Reilly, or conceding that he's right.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:40 AM

Um, thanks Salon

Look, O'Reilly has made his entire career on being a bully. Why did anyone at Salon think this was even remotely relevant or surprising?

Thanks Salon, for not only giving in to the media's lust for sensationalism, but for giving a nothing like O'Reilly what he craves more than anything: Attention at any cost.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:40 AM

It is a third rate intellect

which can't discern the difference between O'Reilly...and a guy with the cojones to stand up to him.

Well, what does one expect of someone who aspires to be a media critic?

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:45 AM

Question:

Does BillO get money or ratings or anything positive from views of this clip?

If so, please stop showing these clips. We already know he is one of the biggest assholes on teevee.

We get it. Don't support him!

the Right actually believes O'Reilly is fair

Believe it or not, people on the Right actually believe that O'Reilly is fair and rational.

I figured that EVERYBODY considered him a clown until I heard some Republicans in my office talking among themselves about him and what a great journalist [sic] he is.

Scary but true.

Oh... and by the way, I think Keith Olbermann (whose show I used to *love*) has turned into a liberal version of Bill O'Reilly.

Perhaps at some point, people on those kinds of shows turn into idiots because they more and more have to "manufacture" outrage in order to have an interesting show night after night.

Friday, October 3, 2008 08:48 AM

Its interesting that you think that they are competing in the blowhard category...

I think that this is the insidious brilliance of O'Reilly's strategy. Certainly, Frank did not come on to the program to yell at Billo. But the only way to combat the O is to yell loud enough so that he stops yelling for a minute. And then viewers think that they are both being jerks. I don't get that analysis, but it seems to be prevalent.

Fighting Back

Personally, I was impressed by the way Rep. Frank just kept hitting back, regardless of the bullying and interrupting and talking-over from O'Reilly. He kept it up until they cut to a commercial. Never let O'Reilly have the microphone unopposed. Never let O'Reilly's untruths stand.

All Dems need to be able to hit back like this. "... but maybe you weren't intelligent enough to understand ..." Brilliant!

Billo's "logic"

If we follow O'Liely's logic here (and I realize putting Billo and logic together is a nearly impossible task), then isn't Bush solely responsible for 9/11? I mean he had been President for nearly as long as Frank had been in charge of that committee.

I would love to see someone play that clip for Billo and then ask him about Bush's 9/11 responsibility. (And maybe call him a coward, too, just for fun.)

@Zandru re: Olbermann

At least Keith Olbermann doesn't shout down people he disagrees with. I do agree that Olbermann has become a Left Wing champion and sometimes goes a little over the top in his criticisms.

On the other hand, he's the only one doing this on the left. You have a bunch of O'Reilly clones all over television, including that smarmy Glenn Beck, John Stoessel, and of course Rush Limbaugh.

For a lot of people this sort of bar-fight approach to politics shows "passion" for the subject. Personally, I prefer the fact-based, analytical approach, which Olbermann does in fact follow more often than not. To compare him to O'Reilly is really a bit of rhetorical asymmetric warfare.

Friday, October 3, 2008 09:37 AM

Annonymoose 7

You're wrong - Olbermann doesn't "manufacture" outrage. There's plenty of it from the right.

And, no, Olbermann is not as liberal as O'Reilly is a right-wing fanatic, jackass. We're all so used to right-wing talking points that anyone who challenges the spin we've been hearing for the past 8 years, seems liberal.

Friday, October 3, 2008 09:39 AM

Typical O'Reilly

I still don't know why people watch this dumbass.

Friday, October 3, 2008 09:41 AM

Koppelman

Barney Frank handled himself exceedingly well, considering the circumstance of having been set up by such a phony blow-hard. But I have to say the only thing that blows harder than O'Reilly is Koppelman's lame-ass neocon assessment. Alex, try to get a life and be objective and newsworthy for a change. Your redneck proclivities are transparent and unbecoming. Pull up your pants and quit exposing yourself. You're supposed to be a journalist.

It is time for Fox to fire O'Reilly

I admit I don't watch Bill O'Reilly much--he's always struck me as a parody of a journalist and/or talk-show host. But I thought I'd watch this clip and give him a chance, because the Democrats share the blame for our current financial crisis.

I watched about 2:30 of a 6:07 clip and had to stop. Bill O'Reilly MUST be fired. This is pathetic, even for Fox. The guy completely loses his cool and is yelling at the top of his lungs at Barney Frank. He's lunging at the camera with his finger and ranting. Frank made good points about his role in regulating Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Did O'Reilly listen? Nooo. What an @--H--e.

This is not a tough interview. This is not skeptical, informed journalism. This is hate-filled screaming. It's the kind of thing you'd expect from 3 am local access cable channels. And Bill always has to be right, no matter what the topic. He's an expert on everything...in his own pointed little head.

Everyone talks about John McCain and his temper. I've never seen a clip of McCain even approaching this kind of meltdown--and apparently O'Reilly behaves like this ALL THE TIME.

What is the point of having this kind of behavior on TV? Does anyone think O'Reilly gets to the point more effectively or accurately by screaming, interrupting and waving his hand around? Does he gets his guests to be more honest or informative? This is a public spectacle. It's about as close we get today to putting someone in the stocks and hurling stones at them.

Here's a litmus test for O'Reilly supporters: if a co-worker behaved like this toward YOU, would you put up with it? Would you think this kind of screaming and air-punching actually solved the problem? If the other guy wouldn't even listen to what you had to say, would you have any respect for him at the end of the day?

Wouldn't you like to see his butt canned?

If any TV personality behaved like this to a conservative figure, the right wing in this country would be baying for an apology or dismissal. Enough is enough. O'Reilly should be fired. It's disgusting that Fox thinks it's OK for one of its major "stars" to scream like a fall-down drunk and refuse to let his guests' opinions be heard.

What the hell is wrong with this country that we tolerate this kind of behavior?
