Iraq and Afghanistan

Biden got stuck at one point, but Palin is just too unserious.

The letters thread is now closed.

Iraq: Shiites remain in control whether US leaves this year, or stays another decade

Palin made the absurd statement that Obama wanted to "surrender" in Iraq when she ought to know the Iraqi government is in the control of the Shiites and will remain so whether the US leaves this year, or stays for a decade more. There is no "surrendering" to be done.

McCain, of course, still thinks the Vietnam War could have been "won" when the artficially created government of "South" Vietnam was certain to collapse eventually no matter how many hundreds of billions more US taxpayer dollars were squandered on the insane adventure. The basic problem was that most people in "South" Vietnam did not want to be separated from "North" Vietnam and dominated by a tiny Roman Catholic minority.

TWICE!

she winked TWICE!

yet they say she didnt give tina fey any ammo.

sadly, inho, tbbh, america is a country of morons. call me elitist, but i WANT my leaders to be smarter than me! i think thats a GOOD thing!

but our people want a downhome mommy who pulls out the baby for the photo ops. they refuse to consider that the down home mommy hasnt spent 15 minutes with that baby in the past week.

what do they think she has been doing since katie couric and last night? lotta red bull and a lotta lotta rehearsing.

but people "on main street" today will still call her a maverick. i am fully prepared for the republicans to win, and then i guess i will have to be a prostitute to earn the money to leave this county.

wanna talk sexism? how about, ALL anyone hoped for her, was that she NOT SCREW UP to the point that it hurt. that is SOME standard.

my friend and i are having a great time asking each other questions and refusing to answer them. then we say, "i might not tell you what you need to know, but what i AM saying, i am saying straight!"

Did I miss something?

Did Scott McClellan take over for General David McKiernan in Afghanistan?

The value of a catch phrase

I'm so glad that john mccain is a 'maverick.' It makes for a very lively drinking game. If s.p. says it enough times, maybe I'll start to believe.

From A Television Picture Editor

After too many buzz words I decided to watch a portion of tonight's Vice Presidential debate sans audio.

Full disclosure, my job is to watch faces and body language, then select the performance that best supports the character. Governor Palin has an amazingly animated face! The winks, the smiling while talking? People are drawn in as moths are to light.

Only when the "script" isn't any good do some viewers, but not all, turn away.

So if this VP thing doesn't work out, maybe she could be a day player ... personally, I'd love to edit her!

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:31 PM

Thank you, Joe Biden

This is a little more heat than I expected from the Democrats. I like that he attacked McCain's ill-deserved "maverick" issue.

Unfortunately, Sarah Palin will play with the down-home morons in the South and Midwest. I guess that's not a surprise, though.

WOW - that was a really a robotic closing from Palin, though. She talked like she was speaking straight from a script. "...a time when men and women were free..." I wonder which McCain staffer wrote that poignant zinger for her.

drinking game

Drink every time Palin said "up there".

(No, not really. You'll die.)

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:24 PM

Biden's attacking Mac's STRENGTH

He's straight out both barrels: John McCain is NOT a maverick on *anything* that affects people's lives in a good way.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:24 PM

Maverick

I'm sick of hearing about Mavericks. To me the term brings to mind one of the crappiest cars in American history.

Oh wait, in this sense it DOES make sense.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:24 PM

The winking!!

WHO is she winking at?

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:23 PM

Mavrick

Does anybody else think of Tom Cruise in Top Gun when she says Mavrick?

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:22 PM

Perky

If being perky is a qualification for VP, then Palin has won the perkiness contest.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:22 PM

don't forget, they are mavericks

I don't think I'll ever be able to use that word seriously again.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:20 PM

for ack of clarity,

I was talkin about Palin and McCain.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:20 PM

What is this VP thing you speak of?

What a disaster.....

I'm in the moron branch of government. It covers all the branches!

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:20 PM

Wha?!

A nation of exceptionalism??? Make it stop!!!

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:20 PM

Ifill's questions are worthless

Who cares what they think their achilles' heals are?

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:19 PM

They're both so Mavericky

You think they'll do the right thing, make the right choice, and then they take a zig...

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:19 PM

Final stages

It is moving towards the end. Pretty much a standoff. Palin did well, but failed to land a telling blow on the Democratic team. Biden was very steady. Palin got the name of General McKiernan wrong, but that's a small point.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:19 PM

Biden on Dangerous Dick Cheney!

First honest direct attack! More! More!

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:18 PM

Ask Palin if the VP is part of the Executive Branch..

go on, ask her

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:17 PM

the winking

I'm waiting for her to make a gun out of her fingers, squeeze off a shot, and then blow the smoke from the barrel . . .

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:17 PM

winky

Now it's 3

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:17 PM

Yeah...

She was blowing kisses at the start. Horrid.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:16 PM

I'm listening to it on the radio

...and her voice is winking.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:16 PM

Wink, wink, nod, nod

Yes, she did wink.

It struck me as very odd given the particular question she was asked.

But I think the shout out to the 3rd graders probably topped it.

And then the comment about the Constitution and the Vice President. She's beginning to descend into Couric interview territory.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:16 PM

"how the debate is going to play"

Personally, it sounded to me like Palin was calling Biden a liar.

Thursday, October 2, 2008 07:15 PM

winky

Yeah, she already winked at least twice. How cute!
