Newman was enormously talented and also incredibly good-looking. However, he preferred to keep a low profile, maintain a solid family and commit his name and celebrity status to philanthropy. What a difference from the silly antics of today's "stars." Paul Newman will be missed.
If only Obama were as liberal as Paul Newman was, then we'd really be going places. Hopefully he'll win and the Bush years can become an unfortunate footnote in our country's history.
You, will be missed by many! Aloha and sweet voyage.
That's the only thing I can think to say about this.
Damn.
There is no other public figure iin my lifetime that led a more admirable life. Can anyone think of a bad word to say about this man? Not that I know of.
Salon please correct your news item "The films of Paul Newsman". His name is misspelled.
He was one hell of a driver.
I met him once. He and my previous boss were good friends in racing and he came to the shop to drive our car. He was a really nice guy. Very down to earth. To see him and meet him you would never have known that he was anything but P.L. Newman - Racer.
Obama could be a hairlip who studders and you would still proclaim him as winner. Why, all you writers are liberal, because liberals are the only ones who will read your crap you constantly post.
well are ya, fbair?
Such a loss...my first reaction was, "oh no!!!"
My second was, "What a well-lived and classy life he had."
My third was, "Crap, one fewer vote for Obama."
Maybe I'm a little obsessed?
P.S. fbair, it's "stutters," honey.
Yeah, too bad he won't be able to savor an Obama victory this November.
Another who I miss GREATLY is Molly Ivins -- her comments during this campaign would be so sweet, dissecting McCain and the Republican spin machine.
Say "Hi!" to Molly for all of us when you greet her, Paul!
He was a great actor, and a great guy.
so true. so sad.
he is - was - is one of the good ones.
"Damn"That's the only thing I can think to say about this.
"Damn."
- I'm with you, KitchenGirl.
what a sad day for movie lovers. I am 58 years old and have always had a huge respect for Newman's body of work. And on top of that, an actor who lived his life the way HE wanted to and gave so much back to the world.
He was in Mansfield for a race at Mid Ohio back in the 80's. My friend and I happened to be going into the lounge at the hotel where he was staying. We saw him at the front desk. Knowing his disdain for signed autographs, we simply waved as we passed him. He smiled and winked and we were thrilled.
The world has lost a classy man with a great deal of talent.
Good bye Paul Newman
He had his mind right boss in almost every way.
Farewell Luke
To guys of a certain age... I'm 58... the character of Cool Hand Luke resonated at some visceral level. I was already a pretty obstinate, authority resisting kid, but something about the way that Newman carried off that character's timelessly courageous resistance really spoke to me. It showed me in stark cinematic terms that sometimes you simply have to resist even when resistance is futile.
I'll have to rent that film again and see how it plays 40 plus years later.
Thank you Paul, for a wonderful example of a fully well lived life.... rest in peace.
PAUL NEWMAN was a fine actor - thought his best role was HUD - and he handled his 'aging parts' well in movies like NOBODY'S FOOL and THE HUDSUCKER PROXY. Besides NEWMAN was a philanthropist and produced a good salad dressing and good lemonade through his food companies. My condolences to his family, friends, and all his fans.
I absolutely adored Paul Newman. Even when I was a kid, I thought there was something special about him. Then as an adult, I knew there was -- he was an actor with a stable marriage to a great woman, a good family, and he gave away chunks of his money to actual charitable causes. While many of the younger generation will only remember him for his salad dressings or cookies, many of us "older" chicks will remember him for his sexiness in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and "Cool Hand Luke" or as Fast Eddie! I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family ...
To Joanne Woodward and family: from my family to yours, sincerest sorrow for your loss. Paul Newman was a true American and one of the finest people in our country's history. May God bless and keep you in your time of grief.
Many years ago I met him at a wedding in Westport. He was kind and quite friendly to a fan! I have always been impressed with his marraige to Joanne for so many years and his famous comment about why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home. He will be missed by all of his fans. My sympathy goes to his family and friends.
And thanks for nothing, Thomas Schaller, for making a post about a great man like Newman really about a political whore like Obama. I'm sure Newman would have appreciated a real liberal in the White House much more than a pale imitation like Constitution-disarming Obama.
About fifty years ago, I asked my mother why all the women were ga-ga over Paul Neuman. A big smile broke out, her mind seemingly lost in some wonderful far-away place, she said, "his eyes, sonny, his beautiful blue eyes."
A woman's dream, a man's man, a gift to mankind.
Sad. Another cinematic great gone. Deepest sympathy to Joanne Woodward and all the family.
"Paul Newman has died. Vote for Obama."
/why would a good liberal vote for Obama?
