Mitt Romney goes back ... to the future!

The former presidential candidate railed against a Washington controlled by liberals and a Europe mired in economic despair -- what decade is he living in?

The letters thread is now closed.

What the Hell Was He Talking About

He sounded so out of touch I'm wondering why he didn't get the nomination.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:07 PM

Mitt's brown-nosing knows no limit . . .

He is well aware that he didn't get the VP pick because he's a Mormon. But Mitt is so desperate for a job in the McCain administration that he will grovel for applause from the very people who rejected him. And railing against the "Eastern elites" is pretty retro. Hey, didn't he used to be governor of a liberal, Eastern state . . . Oh, never mind.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:10 PM

Wow...

That was just puzzling. I think some of these guys (Lieberman, Romney) were driven insane by their disappointment over losing out to Gov. Palin in the "race" for that wonderful VP job.

Between Joe and Mitt some pretty vapid stuff.

Watching the gop convention...

guiliani, see of white faces, all chanting at the drop of a constitutional right. and despite the fact that they are treating it like a roast of obama, they are so unfunny.

angry white america.

The mayor of Raleigh NC

Which has a population today of about 380,000 people and is the state capital, is only a part time job. I can't even imagine what a do nothing post the mayor of North Where the Fuck Are We, Alaska is. A mayor for the most part, in every city and town in America, is answerable to a council board, or the Town Manager or whatever similar job does the REAL work. And if not, then the job is so pathetically useless it doesn't matter who does it or IF they do it.

For a bunch of seemingly smart people you yahoos here @ Salon know remarkably little how local government works.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:20 PM

um, "Drill, baby, drill"!!!??

OK, this is the 9/11 mayor's speech, not Romney's, but is anyone else highly disturbed by the enthusiastic chants of "Drill, baby, drill!"??? Because it's creeping me the hell out.

Why not "Drown the %$$%^ polar bears!"?

frightening & incoherent

Ever since Romney declared that he lacked the mental capacity to tell the difference between religion & freedom, he has stood out as one of the most frightening mullahs the christian right has to offer.

The speech he gave tonight was from the twilight zone - somehow the most conservative supreme court in anyone's memory gets blasted as being 'liberal'? That'd be news to Roberts, I reckon. Hey Mitt - Remember how they handed the white house to the conservative guy?

Who do they think has been running this country for the past 8 years? Are they so desperate to run away from their own records that they think they can bend the space-time continuum & somehow pop out of some alternate universe in which they themselves didn't create the very mess they're criticizing?

Giuliani

What an odious, lying, hateful scumbag. Sack of shit.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:28 PM

rudy

...is currently giving one of the most cycnical, illogical, muckraking diatribes of this whole brain-pretzel of a convention so far...

Palin's worse

Her husband has ALWAYS been proud of America...except for when he was advocating Alaska seceed.

F'in hypocrites.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:44 PM

Lick, lick!

My favorite moment of the RNC so far:

-- Palin's daughter licking her hand to groom Trig's hair!

That is SO going to be on the Daily Show...

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:49 PM

holy hell

I guess we're in for a culture war for the next 60 days...heaven help the United States of America...this is going to get revolting.

her speech is alright, a little hokey, but okay.

the rapturous, and what I can only assume is completely sporadic applause, by an arena full of the whitest people I've ever seen, is giving me the heebie jeebies in the worst way.

my god man, these people terrify me.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:51 PM

SHE DID IT! SHE DID IT!!!!!

She gave the "thanks but no thanks" line about the bridge to nowhere!!!

She LIED in her acceptance speech...AGAIN!!

the mind boggles

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 07:59 PM

debaaser

Naw, she didn't "lie", she just fumbled the delivery:

"I said 'Thanks!' 'But - No.' 'Thanks.'"

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 08:00 PM

The republian strategy

Lie, lie lie lie lie lie and then lie again.....

This speech is small and nasty, and full of lies....

I'm sure the media will let it all pass.

Rudy's speech

I just heard Rudy's speech and actually I thought it was extremely effective. Every time something smarmy or smug came out of his mouth, I added another $100 to the donation I'm making to Obama's effort. It's a pretty big donation!

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 08:05 PM

She is kickng butt

Salon, plrase give us a good place to post when she finishes her speech.

Chavez in a Skirt

Palin INCREASED TAXES on the oil industry and caused a SEVERE DECLINE in oil production.

Vast areas of Alaska have been opened to production since 1998. New fields should have been coming on line now, but her confiscatory tax policies caused oil companies to pull back on their investments.

PUT THE COUNTRY FIRST! LOWER TAXES ON ALASKAN OIL PRODUCTION!

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 08:14 PM

Horrible

Palin's speech sucked ass

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 08:16 PM

Top Design was more intellectually stimulating

I flipped to Ms Chavez vapid speech during the commercials. I actually think the commercials would have been more honest.

Come on, Salon!

New thread! Ain't gonna waste my woirds on a Romney thread. Just throw it open, please.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 08:32 PM

what always makes me laugh...

is that the republicans wanna label palin as a maverick because she "took on all those nasty disgusting corrupt republicans"....kinda ironic selling her to the public by trashing their own party no?

Thursday, September 4, 2008 12:21 PM

Scariest Romney line

"Is a Supreme Court decision liberal or conservative that awards Guantanamo terrorists with constitutional rights? It's liberal."

Earth to Romney: that decision was neither liberal nor conservative. It was constitutional.

Romney Nostalgic for HUAC!

Gort, Klatu Barata Nikto! Romney is the guy the robot carried back to the mother ship in '51, and after a whirlwind tour of the galaxy, he's returned to earth just in time with his soothing message of celestial Mormon perfectitude and God Bless Americanism. Read KM Breay at OS and piss yourself, then try and watch Dr. Phil with a straight face.
