Quote of the day

What would happen if it were Barack Obama's child who was pregnant, unmarried and the center of attention?

We know the answer

Frankly, I think we all know the answer - if Obama had a teenage daughter pregnant outside of wedlock, his canidacy would be over. His fitness as a role model would be questioned, and yes, there'd be plenty of discussions of unwed black mothers.

In a campiagn that is supposedly about character, this *IS* a blow against Palin. However, as the Republican party is essentially a campaign machine, it will be turned around or ignored.

R Hypocrisy knows no bounds

Even if Obama were white and had a teenage daughter and she got pregnant and decided to have the baby - the Rs would go on and on about the terrible morals and depraved lack of family values of the Democratic candidate and his family. The sheer hypocrisy of the Republicans is astonishing to witness.

York stole my article

I believe I made that very point elsewhere in Comments on this site.

I rule.

York make a great point.

I don't think there's any question that the conservative media would have a field day with such a scenario. It would reinforce a multitude of negative stereotypes about blacks, liberals, Democrats' morals, etc. They would immediately criticize Obama's parenting skills and values - "What does this say about the values the Obamas passed on to their children..."

As it is, the Republicans seem almost giddy that a 17-year-old unwed child is going to have a baby; as if teen pregnancy is no big deal.

Amen catnmous!

and Hallelujah.

The GOP is, apparently, the party of Captain Renault.

Levi Johnston

To whatever extent Mr. Johnston has a political affiliation, I'm guessing he's a Republican. Also, I haven't seen a photo, but given that his skin color hasn't been brought up, I'm guessing he's caucasian. Therefore, any negative reaction whatsoever is by definition a nasty liberal media overreaction.

(Oh, and if the situation were reversed, "discussing the issue" is an incredibly polite term for how wingers would be reacting.)

In all fairness, though, I'd like to note that the -- thankfully relatively rare -- nasty references to "typical red neck behavior", "white trash", and so on are obnoxious.

What you don't get Alex

It's not dysfunctional for a family to come together or for these two young people to get married and have their child.

If it did happen to obama we know that the same thing would happen that happens with most black families; the father would book and abandon his responsibilities. That's what obama's dad did. So there would be no family coming together and we would rightly speak about them being dysfunctional.

Gosh, making inappropriate hypothses is really fun. I see why the dems like to do it.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 12:11 PM

Well put.

This is as surreal as it gets. These GOP people are mindless lemmings. here they are on the national stage celebrating an unmarried girl who is pregnant on stage with thousands of people cheering her on like it's a good thing t obe 17 and knocked-up.

All the while In the meanwhile thousands more are watching and thinking: What the f*uck is wrong with them? Don't they have daughters? Nauseating...

Been posing this hypothetical for days

Not to mention if Michelle had just had a special needs child and BO was still running he'd be getting roasted for putting ambition ahead of family...

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 12:14 PM

Hypotheticals...

Republicans simply love them. Almost as much as lies...

What if there is a "sky man" watching our every move (not employed by the NSA)?

What if there really are nuclear weapons in some country that couldn't possibly possess them?

What if Bush was right? Ever?

What if Obama really is _____?

What if giving billionaires tax cuts actually did help the poor?

A: we'd be hearing about it non-stop from the Serious journalists who get their talking points from right wing bullshitters, many of whom call York a co-worker.

On "Talk of the Nation" yesterday

some College Republican from Ann Arbor, MI--of course!*--called in to claim that Bristol Palin's pregnancy is a good thing because "at least she won't be on welfare." If that comment doesn't typify the hypocrisy and selfishness of the GOP, I don't know what does.

*In full disclosure, I'm an Ohio State fan, so this guy was already on my bad side.

Hey tiberius

way to keep it classy...

asshole.

If Ever there Was an Impossible Hypothetical, That One is It.

If ever there was a hypothetical that was impossible, the one on "what if" Barack and Michelle had a child in a family way has got to be it. I'd think that Barack and Michelle are smart enough to make sure their kids are fully informed and unlikely to do something stupid.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 12:19 PM

of course it would be nasty....

Would it be any nastier or more snide and sneering than the commentary over the past few days from us liberal democrats? I can't think how.

How about we get away from the politics of "because the other side would behave like assholes in a case like this, we're therefore justified in behaving like assholes too."

How juvenile can we get.

And I'd bet a million dollars the response to that will be along the order of, "But you don't get it, the OTHER SIDE would be jerks if the situation were reversed."

Believe me, I get it. That doesn't change the fact that both sides are so fundamentally polarized and in the habit of demonizing the other in the interest of "fairness" that we all start looking the same in the end.

What bothers me

is that this Levi guy is guilty of sex with a minor, usually referred to as 'statutory rape'. When people like this appear on Jerry Springer and admit to it, they are often busted by the police in their home town. Why is it that this guy not only gets off, but will be showcased on national television at the Republican convention? Are they now soft on crime and present rapists as just members of the family? WTF?

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 12:21 PM

Amen to that, brother!!!

Now that I know it is something to celebrate, I am going to go out and find me a 17 year old and fuck the shit out of her. Maybe I should join the republican party first though, just to play it safe. This is goint to be great. I haven't gotten nasty with a 17 year old in like 25 years. Yeeeeee Haaaawwww!!!

Let's celebrate!!!
