Father of Bristol Palin's child to attend GOP convention

Palin's boyfriend, Levi Johnston, has left Alaska and is bound for St. Paul.

The letters thread is now closed.

@ JCourt:

Don't punish the kids for the actions of Sarah Palin and John McCain. Besides we don't even know Levi's role at the convention. Just attending the convention doesn't of itself make him part of the politiking.

He's seventeen. Don't you remember what it was like to be that age?

Besides, if you actually support Obama, then why do you want to go against his wishes on this just to satisfy an itch to badmouth?

AKA: Yes they absolutely are

When the republicans and mommy and daddy are shoving them front and center as one of the reasons to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket - yes they are absolutely in play. If they kept the daughter out of sight, fine, but they didn't. You can't put them out there as a "see? family values!" and then say they are off limits. Nope.

That is correct, the GOP attack machine will always traffic in various slanders and innuendos. The question is, how likely is the nonsense to stick? My point was that making fun of high-school kids from rural Alaska and treating a teenage pregnancy as a subject of hilarity and glee, makes it easier for the nonsense to stick. It's the Republican attack machine and the party leadership we should be going after relentless--NOT the voting base, who might someday vote for Democrats if they are persuaded to do so. Making fun of them won't persuade them to do so.

You are, indeed, entitled to mock anybody and everybody you want to, but that doesn't mean it's either the right or the wise thing to do.

Levi's Blog

Well it looks like Levi turned his MySpace to private, but if you still want to see all the nice things he has to say, you can view his blog at http://levi-johnston.blogspot.com/2008/09/thanks-for-visiting.html

@ JCourt: Kids are never fair game.

Obama doesn't want people making an issue of the children. In that, he is both wise and politically astute.

Let these people stew in their own ugly cesspool. Don't get down there with them.

Important point that has been missed about the baby story

The only damage that the Kossacks did to the Palin family was political.

The story about the kid was going to come out sooner or later. You can't hide the existence of a human being without breaking the law. And they were going to get married all along, right? That's would also be a matter of public record when it happened. The sole effect of the Internet rumor-mongering and subsequent media attention was to make the story break before the election.

So when you hear the GOP complaining about the evil liberal bloggers, remember the only thing they can complain about is that it possibly harmed their electoral chances.

Yes we SHOULD pile on

The right wing assholes and fox news assholes would have been piling on NON STOP if this happened to Obama or Biden. They say it's a "private matter"?? Bullshit. they are dragging these kids and this boy to parade them front and center at the convention. They are using them. Where are the so-called "family values" people now? Should anyone who said "leave them alone" be OUTRAGED at this?

Fucking nation of hypocrits. These kids are fair game because Mommy made it that way. What a shitty mother (and father).

That's what I was thinking- maybe an actual shotgun proposal (with the shotgun out of view in the wings of course) on the RNC stage. Just the sort of drama the republican party needs to distract everyone from their ruinous policies!

To dbp1954 and those complaining about how a little (well-earned) derision justifies the name calling from the right- as in calling us elitist, etc. - I have a question- where have you been for oh, the past decade or three? Have you noticed that the GOP will call names no matter what, attack no matter what, try to get labels to stick no matter whether there is any truth or not? The salient point then is decency. Is it indecent to make fun of other people? Maybe it is not the most enlightened thing but we are allowed to be human too.

Is it the most productive thing- probably not but it is certainly more productive than cowering in a corner and wondering exactly what we are allowed to say to the crooks who have taken over our country and our culture. It is certainly preferable to the abject fear we have shown in the face of republican shenanigans for the past few decades.

AKA nice smackdown on the perv pretending to be a psychologist (least I hope they are a fake and not practicing and screwing up people who need help way worse with that kind of bullshit.)

I hope they do not make Levi speak with the press

And I hope they buy him a good suit, and get him a good haircut. At his age, many of my friends were heading for Vietnam. (We had a draft then.) I was not going because I was in college. (We got the draft defferred then, for college.)

At his age, in my college, I only knew one young married couple with a baby. They were nice, humble people, not kick-ass hicks or extremely pretty daughters of beauty queens.

Bristol and Levi are silly kids. Leave them alone. Wish them luck. But, whatever you do, vote for Barack and Joe.

@ AKA Smith: Honestly, that was one of the creepiest troll hits we've seen here

Thanks for stepping in, I guess I'm shallow for riffing on it and not challenging it head on like you did.

I am quite willing to rock and roll but human decency is human decency.

To contradict myself from a snarky reply I just made to dbp1954, what that troll was attempting to do was to get replies that would actually serve as degenerate fodder so perhaps I shouldn't be so blithe.

Who Is the Bigger Loser?

John McCain or this dumb*ss kid who will no longer have a private life the minute he step off the plane? What a bunch of dopes. McCain is going to hemmhorage independent voters and fiscal conservatives. Palin is just too nutty and McCain is just too damn old to be reliable. If I were a Republican I'd be crying but right now I say, "pass the popcorn."
