Who is Sarah Palin?

The governor of Alaska, now John McCain's running mate, is relatively new on the scene.

The letters thread is now closed.

Don't get too happy

"Wow. Glee in Republican land. A true conservative who can lead the US! After a 1-term McCain presidency, she'll go up against Hillary in 2012 and can't be out identity politicked!

Wow, what an implosion for the Democrats (again)!"

You misunderstand Hillary voters - and the United States voter in general. Let me give it to you in 3 words "Commander In Chief."

Woman's vote

There are very few women who voted for Hillary who will not vote for Obama. This division was largely over blown by the media and blog sphere. The few hundred PUMAs were largely right trolls anyway. They will probably be pleased with an ANTI choice woman.

TheDemocratic party is fully united behind Obama.

This token woman VP choice for McCain will not bring the woman's vote. Reproductive choice is the corner stone of all woman's issues. Without reproductive choice, all other choices for woman are limited.

I'm looking at this McCain event...so yesterday.

McCain's choice will help Democrats

Ramesees

That post of yours was a joke, right? Or are you really that delusional?

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:19 AM

So now...

If you don't vote for the Democrats you're a racist and if you don't vote for the Republicans you're a sexist.

See, Dems? Identity politics is bullshit.

We're not talking, we're laughing

Re: "After what most would acknowledge as a masterful Democratic convention, what are people talking about this morning? Sarah Palin."

We're laughing at the absurdity of it. We are completely energized by Obama's speech last night, and we can afford to laugh, at least for today!

Hard hard hard Xtian right

According to people I know in Alaska,Palin is hard hard hard Xtian Right theocrat. Her choice is not some "revolutionary act" by John McCain, but rather an act of desperation to shore up his sagging support among the believiers in Theocracy.

When the Republican are defeated this time, it's going to be a complete rejection of 45 years of "movement conservatism," i.e., our domestic fascist conspiracy.

Hockey Mom as Leader of Free World

As impressive as this woman appears to be (who wouldn't want her on your local city council, or as a neighbor or on your PTA), it is laughable that after less than 2 years of executive office she should control a federal bureaucracy that is more numerous than the entire population of her state. Biden's Delaware may be small in population too but at least he has had decades to get familiar with the inner workings of the US government and foreign relations. Delaware happens to also be the base for much of corporate America (its courts effectively legislate corporate behavior in this country). The only thing Alaska does is live off oil and federal grants.

According to Wikipedia the town where she launched her political career has LESS THAN 10,000 people in it. There are apt. building complexes in NYC that have more people than that.

Basically in the event of a McCain victory, I see her resigning shortly thereafter citing "family" difficulties and giving some neo-con dog the chance to get appointed without having to get voters approval.

Every American should reject McCain and these blantant pandering tactics. He should not be allowed to risk America's future by trotting out a former beauty pageant contestant in order to put one over on America. This is not a beauty pageant! How can you take McCain seriously when he doesn't take America seriously?!!!

The Token One

If conservatives are going to ironically call Obama "The Chosen One," I think we should call Palin "The Token One." It has a nice ring to it.

Are They Desperate Or What?

As a life-long feminist who has arthritis in my elbows and shoulders from pushing up the ceiling and holding it there for other women, I supported Senator Clinton because I feel that she was the most qualified of the candidates with the experience, the intelligence, the skills, the political know-how and the guts required for the job of president. Having voted for her for Senator, I was well-aware of her ability to deliver in the toughest of times. The fact that she is a woman was icing on the cake. The selection of Senator's McCain's vice-presidential candidate is a joke. I'm not even talking about her lack of international experience at a time when our country needs to repair our traditional alliances while forging new ones. I'm talking about her lack of experience in Washington, D.C. How can she move for reform without knowing how the wheels are currently greased? How can she help to repair 8 years of lousy stewardship under the current Republican administration? How can she insure the tripartate system of checks and balances between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government that is so threatened. How can she begin to restore civil liberties eroded from our Bill of Rights? I also wonder how she can relate to, let alone understand, the issues facing places like Detroit and New York. Will she insure the separation of church and state that was so critical to our country's founders? I would not be happy to have a vice-presidential candidate whose limited experience within her state so closely ties her to corporate energy interests. However, I guess Senator McCain's early statements on the role of a vice-president (attending funerals and counting the heartbeats of the president) is one that she can do without getting in the way. Also, although I'm pleased that the Governor choose not to terminate her pregnancy, I loathe the fact that she would deny other women the same choice. As a voter who was on the fence, this choice has pushed me firmly away from the McCain campaign. Twice during my lifetime, a vice-president has had to take over as president. Who would you want to do this -- this Governor or Senator Biden? It's no contest.

What an insult to HC

Are these PUMA folks really such nutjobs that they'd vote for anyone with a vagina? Hello, Palin is the anti-Hillary. If she and McCain get in office, it's bye bye Roe v. Wade

qualifications

Wasilla, Alaska has a population considerably under 10,000. As little as half that, really. I imagine there are blocks in Chicago with that many people. Certainly precincts.

What this choice reveals most

More than anything else, the choices of Biden and Palin make it clear that Obama thinks hard about the future of this country, while McCain thinks hard about how to get elected.
