Nets confirm: It's Palin

John McCain has apparently chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The letters thread is now closed.

A woman?

And just when we were told--at length--that the American Dream is dead. Maybe he "gets" it a little!

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:49 AM

Can't wait

to hear the next GOP attack on Obama as too young and untested.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:50 AM

Holy crap -

that's pretty bold

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:51 AM

McCain just lost a key Republican constituency

There goes the all-important conservative misogynist vote. You know, the "Mommy's place is in the home" crowd.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:51 AM

Whiter shade of Palin

Wow, I really thought they'd be smart and cynical enough to pick Condi Rice, versus this dead letter candidate. Biden will shut her down. This is a desperation move on the part of the Republicans, making me think McCain is this season's Walter Mondale.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:52 AM

how do you spell hypocrisy?

i think it's M-C-C-A-I-N.

she's been governor for one year and before that a city councilwoman. just TONS of experience there.

talk about a desparation move. stick a fork in old johnny. he's done.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:52 AM

Does anyone else feel as though Aaron Sorkin is writing this election?

This thing keeps playing out as if it were a movie or TV show. Good Lord.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:52 AM

palin's job

Her job will be to say:

#1) "I'm a woman! Want a woman? I'm one!"

#2) "I'm from Alaska & we have a saying:DrillDrillDrillDrill!"

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:54 AM

Who?

(blowing coffee on my screen)

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:54 AM

Those who live in glass houses....

Talk about meager records!

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:54 AM

Strange

Does he really think this woman can win over Hillary supporters? No Way! I think they know they're going to lose and he picked a pawn.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:55 AM

Desperation indeed

She's probably the only one who'd say "yes"

Palin Appeal to Hillary Die-Hards?

A few posters (in the previous War Room post/thread) have stated that just because of Palin's gender, some die-hard Hillary supporters may be ever more inclined to now support McCain. However, Palin is a staunchly against abortion rights -- wouldn't that temper any "true" Hillary die-hard's support for the McCain/Palin ticket? I know McCain's similar stance hasn't stopped some from already supporting him, but I tend to think that number of Hillary-for-McCain voters is small and only made to seem significant because of the media coverage a few have received. Additionally the historical nature of her candidacy for vice-president is tempered by the fact that she isn't the first (Democratic Party and Green Party beat the Republicans to it already).

sarah palin

Lifelong NRA member, pot smoker when it was legal to in Alaska, approval ratings in the 80s, husband is a native American who works for BP and races snowmobiles, has 5 children, the most recent one under 2 years old and severely disabled, came in 2nd place in miss Alaska contest, hunted moose with her dad who's a science teacher, used to work on a fishing boat at one point breaking two fingers during a boat collision.

She's got two x chromosomes!

Who's a racist misogynist to vote for in this election?

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:56 AM

What a shameless gender pander

Shorter McCain:

"PUMAs - you have vaginas, My VeeP selection also has a vagina."

Unfortunately for McCain, that may be where the similarities stop.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:57 AM

Oh Snap!

Does that mean that if we criticize her lack of experience we're hypocritical and sexist? Shrewd, McCain, shrewd.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:57 AM

Good Lord

It's Quayle in drag.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:58 AM

PANDERING

At its finest. This is supreme pandering of the highest kind, I'm John McCan't and i approve this message.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:58 AM

An insult to Hillary supporters

I assume the "strategy" behind McSame picking Palin is that he thinks Hillary Clinton's supporters will vote for any woman that comes along, as opposed to a woman who has earned the opportunity.

The republican party never runs out of ways to insult the American people.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:58 AM

This is great.

All women are totally sexist and will vote for any woman over any man. All men are sexist pigs who will vote for a nice pair of tits and ass. All black men want a white woman, so they'll get lots of those votes, and best of all she has loads of foreign relations experience from living in Alaska that was once part of Russia. Brilliant!! Even though McCain is old and sick God won't be able to call him home with a clear conscience, if he gets elected.

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:58 AM

He always said the press was his base

She has a bachelor's degree in journalism. Minors in politics. Wow, just wow. Mayor of a town of less then 9000. What the hell is he thinking? Does he really think women are that dumb?

Friday, August 29, 2008 07:59 AM

Did she....

Have to step over Joe Lieberman's lifeless corpse to claim the job?

And whatever happened to that investigation into her firing of the Alaska Public Safety Commissioner-- allegedly because he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law?

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:00 AM

Her time served as governor, as well as mayor

Is more executive experience than McCain, Obama, and Biden have COMBINED.

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:00 AM

Interesting gamble...

On the one hand, Palin is great balance for multiple constituencies. A much better pick politically than any of the other names on the short list, except possibly Huckabee.

On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken, she's currently under investigation for pressuring a state employee to use his authority to get her sister's ex-husband fired. No smoking guns so far, but I'll be surprised if this doesn't hit the news cycle soon...

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:00 AM

@the.backroads, I think you're right.

It seems that McCain has only been watching Fox News, and was convinced that the PUMAs would be enough to put him over the top.

Blowback is a bitch, especially when you choke on it. McCain just handed the election to Obama.

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:00 AM

potatoE

two words: Dan Quayle

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:01 AM

Tone-Deaf

An obvious attempt to pander to Hillary voters and young voters, who McCain thinks are all too stupid to see through this ploy and look at her actual stance on the issues. And isn't Palin currently under investigation?

McCain just lost the election.

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:03 AM

Breaking News!!!

Palin was McSame's second choice -- apparently Ted Stevens wasn't available!!!

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:03 AM

Choice now easy for die-hard Hillaristas

With two anti-abortion candidates on the Republican ticket, there can be no doubt - as Gore pointed out last night - that if elected this team will pick up to three Supreme Court justices and ensure that Roe v. Wade is overturned. Anyone who votes to help elect McCain will be a party to this. If you're OK with that, then fine. But don't deny the fact that abortion will again be illegal in America if McCain is elected and own your part in it.

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:03 AM

Wow!

Bold pick -- it'll be interesting to see how this goes over! She seems perfect for McCain's ticket except for the experience issue. This choice would seem to really blunt his ability to attack Obama as a neophyte.

Friday, August 29, 2008 08:03 AM

Bold move.

...but isn't she under investigation for abuse of power (firing of a state trooper who had wronger her sister)?
