Obama camp responds to Palin pick

In a statement, a spokesman for Barack Obama slammed John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The letters thread is now closed.

I'm Surprised

Palin is embroiled in a nasty family scandal that may be linked to official corruption. She's being investigated. Not a good sign. Perhaps McCain thinks that tacking a woman, any woman, on the ticket is enough to persuade female voters. I think he's in for a rude awakening.

History Repeating

Dan. Quayle. Revisited.

McSame's odd choice will bite him in the ass, as soon as Stevens' trial begins and the massive corruption of the Alaska GOP (and the collusion with Big Oil) gets the national spotlight.

And her hyper-pro-life position will soon tarnish any appeal that she has with PUMA-types.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:14 AM

So the Obama camp has conceded the election?

If McCain put Palin "a heartbeat away" from the presidency, isn't she already VP?

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:17 AM

Nice try, Obama

But by being a mayor and now a governor, Palin has more executive experience than Obama.

Obama hasn't run anything in his life larger than a senator's office. He's just used other people's money to advance his own political ambitions.

A fictional President damns McSame VeeP pick

Why not Sarah Palin?

To paraphrase Jeb Bartlet, "because he might die."

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:19 AM

This may be Obama's first major misstep.

I don't think this is the right tone to take yet.

Welcome her to the race first.

THEN attack her.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:19 AM

Obama has zero forign policy experience too

except for his carefully choreographed trip.

So what's the difference? Obama will be the one in charge and Palin would be second in line.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:19 AM

@dvsmith

Sadly for you, Palin was the one turning in the corrupt politicians in Alaska. She's on the right side (pun not intended) of that issue.

But I know the Obama camp's usual tactics of guilt by association. She lives in the same state as Ted Stevens, hence they must be pals, even though she denounced Stevens publicly.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:20 AM

So basically

McCain, the small government conservative, big on experience, picked an inexperienced woman from a state noted for government pork as his Vice President?

Eiiish.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:24 AM

T. Suarez

By your logic, she has more "executive" experience than McCain! Maybe she should be at the top of the ticket.

And yes, she fought against some corruption in Alaska. That doesn't mean she isn't currently fighting her own scandal of misusing ehr political power to help a family member. Which she is.

He's just used other people's money to advance his own political ambitions.

You're describing John "I don't know how many houses my wife's money has bought me" McCain here, right?

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:27 AM

@T. Suarez

Obama's executive experience?

He's run a pretty decent campaign for the last 18 months.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:32 AM

What's up with Dan Quayle?

Doesn't anybody remember that George Sr. won with Quayle, and he didn't even have to cheat, like his son?

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:33 AM

A FOX news anchor choice

Well, McCain's VP choice effectively takes the experience issue off the table. And she's purty, too.

Guess McCain wants the two votes he might pick up from disgruntled anti-choice Hillary supporters.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:35 AM

Is this a fucking joke?

Her bio and resume reads like something off the onion.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:38 AM

@ T. Suarez

Yeah, she is pretty clean...

except for that little abuse of power wherein she ordered her Superintendent of Public Safety to fire a state trooper, who just happened to be her former brother-in-law, who just happened to be in a nasty custody dispute with her sister.

And when her Chief of Public Safety told her he would not, in the course of his duties, fire a trooper solely for the sake of personal retribution, she fired Alaska's most senior Law Enforcement officer.

Yeah, that's squeaky clean... [/sarcasm]

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:38 AM

Integrity Before Power?

For those wondering - she allegedly tried to fire her former brother-in-law from the Alaska state cops for having the temerity to divorce her sister. She's denied it, but the state is probing.

McCain spoke about putting integrity before power, I wonder who he was talking about.

Rest of Democratic world: What a stupid choice

Salon.com comments: "This is bad for Obama!"

Interesting that a "progressive" magazine is read mostly by right wing propagandists, or those who listen to them.

I'm not saying I know why. I report, you decide. You should all be familiar with that slogan.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:39 AM

And

She is supposed to debate Joe Biden.......

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:39 AM

McCain Mccalculated: "Now what would give me that fresher look?

A Man? A Woman? Or one 'o those super mutants the got in the comic books.

The gevernor of a Alaska? For what more could you aska?

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:40 AM

women voters

I think the Obama campaign needs to hit Palin harder on being a woman who is opposed to a woman's right to choose.

Obviously McCain is trying to win over the Hillary fans here, and Obama needs to show that while he might not be Hillary's gender, he is much closer to her on the issues - particularly women's issues.

They mentioned it in this response, but I think that needs to be the focus.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:41 AM

Experience is overrated

We don't need experience or smarts. We just need a reasonably intelligent non-crazy. I'm sure her qualifications, such as they are are as good or as poor as anyone else's. It's all rather meaningless given that whomever wins the election will carry around enormous baggage of their constituencies and will lead according to the will of those constituencies. Which of itself is almost meaningless anyway, since we longer have the capability to operate a functioning government anyway. Nothing will get done. Not in Congress not in the courts and not in the executive branch. Look forward to 4 long years of fear, timidity, inaction and gridlock. I probably doesn't matter who gets elected anymore though you may be less depressed with one candidate vs another.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:42 AM

Oh, even more joyful...

...let's have Hillary Clinton take on Palin. Oh, to see those two in a debate...the joy I feel in my heart...I bet Hillary Clinton is having a nice chuckle this morning...

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:43 AM

@lynx

By your logic, she has more "executive" experience than McCain!

Nope, McCain rain a Naval Aviation squadron, and if anyone knows naval aviators (and the Navy in general), that's a lifetime of executive experience in a short 4-year tour.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:44 AM

They want to make Abortion the Agenda/Wedge Issue

and turn away from the War and the Economy.

WEDGE ISSUE WOMAN.

That is what this is about I think.

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:46 AM

@Cat vs. Roomba

Sadly, I think you're right.

I have to know the origin of your name, though, because if it's what I'm imagining, it was probably funny as hell.

Palin pick

The oldest president elect selects a 44 yr old beauty queen with city council experience to negotiate with Putin.

JUDGEMENT: SENILITY AT ITS BEST!!!

Friday, August 29, 2008 09:47 AM

T. Suarez

I see. Your definition of "executive" experience is "whatever makes the Republicans look like they have more."

What a crock.

She's got less experience than Obama. McCain is a lying, Bush-loving fool. You want to strap yourself to that bandwagon, just make sure you don't get crushed when the wheels come off.
