MSNBC's meltdown

The station's feuding anchors add an acrimonious subplot to the Democratic convention.

The letters thread is now closed.

Why do you give these people more air time?

Really.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:13 PM

At first I thought it was high-school

but it is worse, it is more like junior high school. Take all of the press throw them within a mile of eachother and they go to tatters gossiping about each other.

Talk about silly season.

I could give a rat's ass if someone blows up and shows some real emotion- it is fine - in the end who cares? It is still not news.

I Love It! Don't Change a Thing

Are you kidding me? This is the closest I can get to actually being with my family during election season. The fact that their disagreements and frustrations have bubbled to the surface represents the way most of the people I know feel at the end of eight years of the Bush administration - frayed.

It's my news channel of choice followed by CNN - never watch Fox - and, even though I don't agree with them all of the time and yell at them on occasion, I continue to tune in.

That's how I came to love Rachel Maddow and they had the good sense to give her a show.

I don't get MSNBC anymore

Comcast moved it to their digital package, the dirty rats.

Obviously none of these guys will be the new moderator for "Meet the Press".

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:14 PM

On the other hand

They could be staging this because they need conflict to sell ads and the Dems did not cooperate.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:14 PM

It may not have been "good" television,

but I must admit that the spats on MSNBC were more fun to watch than the more staid coverage on CNN. It wouldn't surprise me if the talking heads were told by the producers to mix it up a bit on the air. People love to watch others fight.

I predict Chris Matthews will kill himself on camera in 2009

When he finally realizes that no one cares if he stands on his desk, unzips his fly and screams clintonclintonclintonclintonclinton 2 million times. I mean sure, it made him a rich man, but those size 13 hats he needs are expensive.

missioncreep

Right on- and I love seeing Rachel Maddow taking Pat Buchanan on - awesome!

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:35 PM

Oh and another thing

about jounalistic bullshit- you need to stop using each other as sources! I don't mind people being real humans- it is refreshing- I do mind the big clusterfuck echo chamber of gossip that has supplanted real news!

Completely unwatchable

This is an example of how the networks believe their punditocracy is more important than the people they are talking about. I browsed the coverage on MSNBC (only as a fan of Olbermann) on my TiVo watching only the speeches, which, thankfully, they didn't interrupt. I'm a big fan of Olbermann's, at least when he seemed to be the lone voice speaking about about this ridiculous administration, but this coverage has been beyond retarded. My TiVo is recording the C-SPAN coverage as I write.

Actually it's called honesty

And they should have cut the mic of that idiot republican who said Bill and Hillary would vote McCain. I like it when news people don't let Republican operatives spread their unfounded lies unopposed. Call it a meltdown if you want, I call it the only honest coverage available.

Verbally living out their UFC fantasy

Well since these people are faux journalists and self promoting asswipes I don't expect any standard to be upheld. It's PT Barnum's family dolled up to look like bearers of balance and sanity. Though maybe this is the result of Bush's legacy as another poster mentioned.

The worst was last night when Rove Jr. Mike Murphy made his intentionally charged comment about the Clintons voting for McCain and Chris Matthews stumbling and spitting over himself to press him on it. Are you kidding me? Murphy's a political strategist who was trying to make an incendiary comment and Matthews as usual took the bait and wasted air time allowing Murphy to continue by engaging him in it.

Douchebags.

Welcome to the stupid mockery

That is the American punditocracy.

@ CeliaInSF

I've been reading and agreeing with your posts for a while and thought it was time to say hello. It's nice to know that I'll be in good company while watching Rachel. :D

bullhorns and bull

The crowd and elements are wearing on the talent, and that's making them a little sensitive. I love it. If it means they're calling the GOP'ers on their bullshit, great. I loved Matthews asking Mike Murphy to give a grade to the Bush Administration. When Murphy said "C" and acted like that was speaking truth to power, Olbermann's off-camera cry of "A C!?!?!" was perfect.

What I don't get is how they don't have any crowd control at all. Right now, and for the last hour or so, there's some jackass in the crowd with a recording megaphone, who keeps pushing the button to make it play his recorded shout of "9/11 was an inside job!" over and over again, so loudly that you actually can't hear the on-air talent. Now, when you have an outdoor set-up in a city, you have permits and usually policemen- I don't know if Denver has a public nuisance ordinance, but what city doesn't these days? Free speech is one thing- the guy's welcome to scream his crap until he loses his voice- but this is ridiculous.

Talking heads as celebrities.

Bloggers blogging about TV reporters has turned them into celebrities rather than purveyors of news. They're merely acting the part now, like a sort of Stanford prison experiment.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:51 PM

I turned it off after the guy with the blowhorn

I hate blowhorns...hate hate hate but I just cringed for MSNBC and wondered who was going to get fired for putting them out there. It's ok in theory, but man...that one person demonstrated how bad an idea it was.

I'll still watch MSNBC but not for the rest of the conventions :

Thursday, August 28, 2008 03:52 PM

It's because there's no longer the conformity of opinion there

It's really peaceful when everyone has the same opinion. It's about time there was at least some disagreement in the media.

Of course, they aren't usually all stuck together like they are at the convention. Still, it's good to hear someone basically call Bull S**t when one of the GOP shills spouts absolute nonsense.

Meanwhile

things that actually matter go entirely unmentioned here. For example, an ABC news reporter was arrested for filming on public property outside a hotel which was the site of a party thrown by lobbyists. It used to be that if you didn't want to be seen somewhere, you wouldn't go (or you the onus was on you to be discreet). Now, I guess you just station the police outside to arrest anyone with a camera.

I bet if this would have happened during the RNC convention Salon would be all over it.
