Novak's back, warning against McCain-Lieberman ticket

The ailing columnist pens a missive arguing that the choice of Joe Lieberman as John McCain's running mate would be disastrous for Republicans.

The letters thread is now closed.

I need to keep up with current events

I thought Bob "Who's My Hood Ornament?" Novak was already in hell.

Lieberman, the American Quisling

Lieberman ... has close Republican friends. One of them prevailed on Lieberman to tell McCain that a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be a disaster for all concerned, and especially for the GOP.

That's an understatement if ever there was one. No doubt Waterboard Joe's heartfelt desire to help the Republicans as much as possible in November will have him staying well back from McCain's ticket.

Even as a "maverick" (and ironic that Lieberman's fecklessness is painted that way, given that McCain's lockstep Republicanism is similarly presented) Joe Lieberman is the Quisling of the Democratic Party. He needs to go. Connecticut voters need to recall him, and bad.

Frankly, I hope he gets puffed up with hubris and joins McCain, but he's savvy enough to know that's a suicide mission, and he'll serve his masters better if he stays back.

Secretary of State, that's a good one.

And one more reason why I would be happy to see LIEberman on the ticket, and one more reason why NOT to vote for that stale old man and his Bushit ideation...

Lieberman Work be a bargain

With Lieberman as either VP or Sec of State we could save considerable money because I'm sure Israel would be funneling money into the McCain campaign. In fact they might be willing to split the cost of his salary since he'll be working for Israel at least as much as for the US.

Beating the Rap

So Novak has a brain tumor. I am sorry to hear that but does it really mean he beats the hit and run rap? Most people would be in court, running to the bathroom every half hour to throw up from their chemo treatments while the judge threw the book at them. There really are two kinds of justice in Amerika...one for the powerful and the other for "just us".

Brain Damage

I see Novak now has brain damage. Poor guy. I guess he wanted to get this done before he meets his old friend Ken Lay.

The only repug VP better for dems

than Lieberman would be Bobby Jindal.

Either one would make all the racists' heads explode.

Please, please let it be Lieberman or Jindal.

Ah ... Lieberman

Unfortunately, Novak's track record on accurate analysis and predictions is right up there with Bill Kristol's. I think they've been wrong on just about everything.

Outside of Connecticut the low information, middle-of-the-road voter still thinks Lieberman is centrist. There is a good chance that a Lieberman VP nomination would allow the independent, latent racists out there to assauage their consciences while they vote against Obama.

Meanwhile, all the talk about Republicans not voting for a pro-choice VP is bullcrap. Remember all that talk about how "the base" wouldn't vote for McCain? Remember all the Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson diatribes against McCain? Well, those guys are back in the fold.

For "the base" being a Republican isn't a party membership, it's a fundamental part of their personal identity, as much as their gender and profession. "The base" (ironically, Al Qadea translasts as "the base") are Republicans first, Americans second (to the degree that they can distinguish between the two -- often they can't).

"The base" would vote for someone with a far worse personal history than Bill Clinton, who was liberal on social issues and who favored gun control, if he was Republican and acted sufficiently macho (as evidence, look up Rudy "911" Guliani). So, for all the whining today, "the base" would indeed vote for McCain-Lieberman come November.

Furthermore, there is something Lieberman has in common with "the base". Both have an intense, irrational attachment to a tribal view of the world. The only difference is that "the base" identifies with America, Lieberman identifies with Israel. However, there is definitely a meeting of like minds there, which is why Lieberman gets along so well with the leaders of "the base" -- even those leaders who are on record saying nasty things about Jews.

So, I do indeed fear a McCain-Lieberman ticket. Obama has only 2 months to get the low information voter to understand the Real McCain, not his image. It will be worse if they have to attack the Lieberman image as well.

of course he won't pick lieberman

no one really likes him. his only issue is WAR, WAR, WAR.

it's just to sound bipartisan.

he's creepy, got no juice.

It won't be Lieberman

McCain has to convince the right wingers that he is one of them, and Lieberman will simply reinforce their perception that McCain is a closet liberal. He needs someboy far enough right to reassure them, but not so extreme that they push away the Dems who are thinking of crossing party lines to vote for McCain because they are angry at Obama/the Dem party. Were there any pro-choice conservatives in their primary? I didn't follow the Republican Primary that closely.

@GregoryG

Actually, the legal system does not traditionally try people who drive badly because they have an unknown illness. This is not a case of the law giving a rich person a break. Perhaps if Novak had killed somebody, he might be charged with some minor infraction just to ensure that he could never get his license back, but most human beings are willing to give dying people a break when they do things that are beyond their control - even obnoxious people like Novak.

if mc jerk does and it sinks him deep in the cesspool- great! otherwise, beware of not so " liberal" joe

funny that this, both my mom[ obama supporter from the start] and I [ hillary supporter now for obama-like hillary is]; whom now live in connecticut; both guessed right about "say it aint' so joe" kissing up to mc cain[ he endorsed him!]

liberman, while UNFORTUNATELY still our wonderful " independent democrat" senator [ how he ran, and won!]whom says he's pro-choice and all that shit; is really much more like mc jerk is!

I could not believe all the stupid , long time liberman voters here in CT supporting him again when we had an better alternative as democratic senator nominee! they all bought the big " independent democrat" LIE; something which CT fixed by NOT allowing primary contenders to run for 90 days afterwards!

a long while back, I had to convince my mom this by showing her a comment liberman made in, of all things; marilyn manson's book, " long hard road out of hell". [" this is perhaps the sickest rock group....signed by...major record company"- sen joe liberman-D-CT ] he is just as conservative/right-wing religious, as many right-wing repugs! and yes, he supports both bush, and now, john mc jerk.

oh, and mom guessed right on something else; that mc cain offered him a position. hey, liberman's " kiss of shame" to none other then " dictator" bush- simply said it all!

and so, if novak is right about liberman being bad for mc cain? then I sincerely hope that mc cain chooses him! BUT, I really doubt that that will happen if he does. in fact it would make him stronger as repuggy contender for US president!
