Greek columns? Really?

The stage for Barack Obama's speech is being set up, and it looks like the design could have been a lot smarter.

The letters thread is now closed.

Not Greek Columns, Whitehouse Facade

WTF! I thought this was a basically progressive publication with balance, but lately all you seem to be able to do is wring your hands and whimper the republican talking points. Enough! Grow a spine, use your imagination and start spinning our way - or at least fairly. You could have pointed out the classic timeless strength of the design. You could have speculated how the stage design reflected the statesman Obama. You could have noted that the columns visually echoed those of the Lincoln Memorial, reinforcing the parallel of this day with that glorious day of hope 45 years ago on the D.C. Mall. Or, most significantly, you might have actually paid attention to the designer's intent and realized that the stage was designed to effect a Whitehouse facade. No, you just lost the moment and let the republican line take the lead, so much so that you even spoke it yourself. If McCain wins this election, it won't be because Barack didn't run a strong campaign, and it won't be because his supporters didn't work hard enough. A good share of the blame will have to be owned by what is left of this liberal media that continually sows many seeds of doubt through their failure of imagination. Get out of the way if you can't lend a hand.

OH GAWD!

I saw the monstronsity called a "back-drop" last night on TV. I don't know what these people are thinking that the rest of us simply cannot figure out without a "guide."

Barack Obama is not only not experienced enough to be President, he can't even set up a stadium to reflect the tone, temperment, and values of the people he needs to vote for him!

I hope this guy crashes and burns with his Carnival Show of consultants, make-over artists, and 5-legged calfs!

News flash, Alex........

The Republicans already have photos of the "set", so I expect an ad in the next couple days.

And for the record: I think Obama's decision to do this at Invesco Field was completely tone-deaf and makes him look arrogant as hell. I hope he's prepared to have it crammed down his throat, because that's what will happen. And it will just reinforce the earlier McCain ad with Obama in Berlin shouting "O-BA-MA; O-BA-MA."

@Renegade Iconoclast

Every Democratic candidate except Obama and Clinton was gone before the end of January.

Yeah, field of 8 my ass.

Nice with the name-calling, though. Right out of middle school, that.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 02:41 PM

really?

The Dem field was more like 8

Okay, name 'em.

And fringe cuckoos like Kucinich don't count, since they were never serious candidates.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 02:37 PM

Actually, no, TSuarez

The Dem field was more like 8. Nice try, though, ya self-righteous hypocrite

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 02:24 PM

@Renegade Iconoclast

McCain got that many votes out of a field of six. Obama got his out of a field of two.

Try again.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 02:21 PM

Um, no I didn't

Um, but you said that he earned them through hard work.

Um, no I didn't. If you bother to read carefully and not jump to conclusions, I said, "All earned ..."

And my point stands. Obama lives in a ritzy neighborhood that has as much in common with most Americans as presumably the neighborhoods where the McCains own houses. Who cares?

But Obama, of course, couldn't really afford his house until he got a shady Chicago fixer (and now convicted felon) to do a little fudging for him.

Hypocrites Unite!

T Suarez barely manages to dribble...

And barely 10% of the registered voters is still a fringe.

By my rough count, McCain got ~10mil votes, or about 60% of what just one of our candidates got, or less than 33% of the votes for both democrats combined.

So... according to your definition of fringe-i-ness, who's more fringe? McCain, or Obama?

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 01:50 PM

Yeah, right, jeb

Biden would make a much better President than Obama, imo. There is nothing wrong with experience. But I think that Obama undercut both his "change" message and his attacks on McCain being too old by choosing Biden as his running mate...

And if he'd picked someone with less experience you'd be harping on how he picked an empty suit for a running mate. Admit it, Obama can do nothing right in your eyes, and you pounce on every article remotely related to the election to criticize him, and grouse about how much better Hillary is than... pretty much everybody.

as well as alienating a lot of Clinton supporter's who would have had far fewer doubts about voting for him if he had swallowed hard and chosen Clinton.

Now we get to the real reason you don't like Biden. He's not Clinton.

When are you going to figure out that we don't care about your bitter tirades, and that we're just cutting you to ribbons because it's fun?

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 01:11 PM

Welcome to my world, Celia...

I don't even bother trying to engage in debate with jebglum...it is like driving a car with your feet - you could do it, but why?

But I admire you for trying.

@TSuarez

And yes, all the houses are in said heiress's name or those of her children, so in fact McCain owns no houses, seeing as you're wanting to get technical.

Um, but you said that he earned them through hard work. I didnt bring up the (deeply hilarious) 'I dont know how many houses' thing. But, since you did, McCain was clearly talking about the heiresses houses when he stumbled with the answer, as you know, so dont try and whitewash it by getting into who is listed on the title. Are you saying he doesnt know how many personal residences she owns? Thats a bit far-fetched. That he has no idea of the content of his family's portfolio? Well, thats a great trait for a chief executive.

And yes, I am making an accusation about Obama, as have many others. Even Obama admits it was a mistake. The deal stinks to high heaven, and we still don't know all the details.

OK, so what is the accusation and why does it stink to high heaven?

And barely 10% of the registered voters is still a fringe.

So, who garnered enough votes by your metric to NOT be "fringe"?
